My house is a mess because we do not kill spiders in this house. So a hundred years of webbing is gonna fall soon. Any day now the windows will open & the spiders will venture outside. I am an optimist. I will collect the egg sacs & they too will ...

Sixteen more Actias dubernardi hatchlings this evening. Here's one on the tip of a scots pine (Pinus silvestris) needle. It has just hatched and was eating its eggshell (as they typically do) when I transferred it onto its host plant. This ...

My home is a mess because spiders are a protected life form. They are land crabs that protect me from the scourge that mosquitos are. Spin those webs arachnids.

I was bird-watching in one of my favorite swamps today when I came across 15 of these beauties: Eastern painted turtles. It was only 40°F today, but these guys were taking advantage of the sun.

I like when the Geckos get on my laundry room window. The combination of their white undersides and the fogged up windows makes for a weird visual.

It's a boy! This is my first Actias dubernardi adult. I'm so excited! He eclosed sometime early this morning--I found him when I came downstairs at 6am.

I heard scratchy, rustling noises today and realized that it's coming from my Actias dubernardi cocoons. They're wriggling and writhing with life. I can't wait until they emerge as huge, beautiful moths. They're due to eclose within the next 2 ...

Spring is coming! The Zster snakes are back to eating weekly... The king snakes are waking up after a winter nap. I am always amazed by how much bigger they are for having been sleeping and not eating. Here's Siri ("Sirius Black"), my youngest ...

A lucky screen grab I caught from '14. One of my favorite images ever. That spider was on one of my milkweeds in a year I was rearing monarchs. I've video of this little wasp dragging it along the windowsill. :D

This is "Bela", a common Chilean rose tarantula (G. rosea). A gift from my son's mother, more than making up for a well-earned rep as a notoriously bad gift-giver. Not sure how old she was when she came to live with us in 1994; my best guess is one ...

It's been years since I lived with Boxelder bugs. The two I've found this week didn't recover from the freeze.

This hopper allowed me to stroke him repeatedly - after which I couldn't exile him from my deck plants, let alone toy with the idea of munching those for their high protein source any more. but hey, I'm a snowflaky vegetarian anyway!

Not much to look at, but always a welcome sight. This little guy is a winter stonefly. Sometimes they show up as early as January, so this year they seem a little late. But they always bring me hope that spring isn't far off!
