Anyone who once was a part of my life who aggressively disrespected my autonomy is no longer part of my life. When someone attacks my preference for reality, I become decidedly less respectful of their feelings about their own fantasy paradigm, and let them know why I think it is stupid. For some reason (hmm...) those people have chosen not to keep engaging dialogue with me.

The closest thing I have remaining to that is my own father, now 80, who continues to try to "witness" to me, but he acknowledges, not only my autonomy, but also my ability to apply reason. To him when he does start to preach, I "respectfully" point out the glaring holes in his paradigm. He hasn't displayed any anger about that, but it does seem to go right in one ear and out the other.

I got a few relatives who are arrogant, aggressive, loud, noisy, pugnacious PITA (pain in the ass). I have to stay away from them. If they would agree to talk about safe topics, that would be fine. But they don't. They do not know the meaning of the word "respect."

I haven't any family left that is above me I am now the backstop, the elder. No one has ever had any problems with my atheism because all of my family are godless, as far as I know and all of my dead family members were godless mainly because of experiences in WW2. I would walk away from him the moment he said anything to me about this subject -actions speak louder than words they say!

What is there to respect about that. Beliefs are fair game for challenge and ridicule. If he respects you as a person that's fine, if he doesn't; fuck him.
