We live in the Neoliberal Age of Austerity. Most people cringe and roll their eyes when I use the term neoliberal. But it is worse than that. It is inspired by Libertarianism and funded by the Koch dynasty and its friends. Read Democracy in Chains by Nancy MacLean for an astounding description of how we got here. The section on the Good Samaritan was particularly interesting.
