I always wondered how they replaced the ones who died when they were on a long space mission. Shouldn’t they have started to experience a worker shortage? Also they were pretty damn cavalier about the deaths. What was that about?

It is a movie and they know it.
@dalefvictor stories are supposed to be logical enough that you can suspend disbelief. This was always a major fail for me.
Maybe they use a replicator or a holodeck to make more red shirts.
It is akin to the old superstition proposition that if you strap a slice of toast butter side up to the back of a cat and then drop it will you have created perpetual motion?
