I would love to start an agnostic prison outreach program that teaches inmates how to be good citizens without religion.
Won't work.
Primarily because inmates frequently cite "turning to Jesus" as proof they're entitled to early release. Parole boards have heard it before, sometimes from a returning inmate. The primarily reasons one goes to jail are mental problems and inability to hold down a job. Additionally, one finds high levels of functional -- if not outright -- illiteracy. Prisons for profit now add to the reason why the US has among the highest percentage of people in jail.
One day I shall explain how to lower inmate population and raise your food bill. It is an unpopular, yet practical, theory.
@WonderWartHog99 problem number one is for profit prisons. But I don’t buy it “won’t work”. How many times has that statement been proven wrong. If the program works and results can be tracked then an agnostic program should pull similar weight to patrol boards than religious programs. It would take time to implement, but every great journey starts with a single step as optimistic people like to say...
@TheKranium >But I don’t buy it “won’t work”.
You're saying that without knowing what my master plan is for lowering prison populations.
Your plan wouldn't work because it assumes the average jail inmate is reasonably intelligent. You may assume you have met the great numb nuts of all time but you have no freaking idea until you've rubbed elbows with jail birds.
@WonderWartHog99 My plan working has nothing to do with whatever your plan is. They are unrelated. While lowering prison populations is important, that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about helping those that are in prison rehabilitate and learn to become good citizens. You don’t have to be a genius to learn how to be a good citizen. I think the movie Forrest Gump hit that nail on the head. As does religion itself.
@TheKranium >My plan working has nothing to do with whatever your plan is. They are unrelated.'
When you don't say which plan you're referring to at first, confusion reigns. As long as we're dealing with confusion . . . .
>You don’t have to be a genius to learn how to be a good citizen.
I wasn't talking about geniuses by a long shot. I was talking about semi-literate jail birds including the ones that are unable to read because they're just not that swift or ambitious. Most of them don't have a GED or are even high school graduates. Somebody has to have below average intelligence. These are people actively resisting education because they have higher density than your average fence post. I wouldn't call them idiots because it's such an out of date term. I should restrain myself from hammering that point even further.
Education is not the answer. Because your plan centers around education, it won't work with those people.
I think the movie Forrest Gump hit that nail on the head.
Snort. Giggle. Giggle.
It's fictional movie in which Forrest's mother fucks the school board to keep him in school and Forrest marries a whore dying from STD. Yea, that is a realistic model for you. There are a fair share of a southerners who view the movie as Hollywood's excuse why gentlemen from the south do well. They're idiots but, you know, they're POLITE idiots.
Not to put too fine of a point on it: YOU BOUGHT THAT? Hooray for Hollywood!!
@WonderWartHog99 I’ve seen enough of this country to know that there is more truth to the movie Forrest Gump than you realize. And what I’m talking about is instead of brainwashing someone in the ways of religion, you in essence brainwash them in the ways of agnosticism. Why do you believe people who are ignorant enough to fall for religion while a captive audience in prison aren’t capable of being “brainwashed” into agnosticism while a captive audience?
@TheKranium >I’ve seen enough of this country to know that there is more truth to the movie Forrest Gump than you realize.
I've known enough cripples to know they're not going to become instantly cured by fear like Forrest.
Everyone who gets into business (i.e. Gump's shrimping) without knowing what they're doing or having a little business education fails. I've yet to see legless first mates getting a job on a small fishing smack as the entire crew. Do you think Gump was suddenly gifted with a knowledge of marine navigation and marketing?
I can believe an old buddy of mine who told me commercial fishermen are the "scum of the earth" because I've met enough of them. Forest would have been cheated, lied to and had his boat stolen.
The movie takes 87 tons of artistic license. You could charter ocean liners through those those plot holes. On the other hand you're holding it up as truth, justice and the American way. Hokey smokes, Bullwinkle!
Additionally you're saying is you've traveled more than I have without knowing where I've been to and lived in the United States. It is refreshing however to see self righteousness to extend to "I'm more traveled than thou." I've been from Key West to Tacoma, Washington; from Southern California to Maine and points between. Why I've even been to where the native tongue is Hindu-Creole, visited Central America and parts of Europe. You? Where you been? Ever been to places where the smallest unit of cocaine is a sugar scoop? I went to one place off the east coast of Africa where right after stepping onto the dock they offered to sell me a block of opium and sun glasses (separate vendors).
To cut to the chase: your rhetoric is a shade shaky. Original, misinformed and bogus.
>Why do you believe people who are ignorant enough to fall for religion while a captive audience in prison aren’t capable of being “brainwashed” into agnosticism while a captive audience?
My point on that issue is the inmates are likely to try to sell the parole board they have become one with Christ and therefore should be released into society. Parole board isn't that stupid. However, the inmates don't know that and try it anyway. Logically if they approached the parole board and proclaimed they're Godless heathens now, they might find their sentence extended.
@TCorCM Don't know if my profile picture is being used by another member. Could be but I am unaware if it is. Check out the member's profile page. Mine is the only one that says "It's me." Everybody else writes about 50 to 200 words describing themselves.
I figure the guy I was arguing with threw up his arms over his head, screaming "Fucker convinced me. I'm wrong, wrong, wrong."
Nobody wants to say "I'm wrong. He convinced me." They just stop responding and go away.
Having worked as a teacher in a prison...teaching science....I can attest to the validity of this. I was astonished at the many #religulous guys there....
But the ministers in prisons do have a "captive" audience...and they do talk about "salvation" a lot... so I get it...but I do feel sorry for them.
