If you read his rant in the post, you will see this missive: “Using 'effect' when one means 'affect', is an example. I only have about a 9th grade formal education, if that, and I know better. (I wouldn't have been much of a journalist if I hadn't!) How do some people get a High School diploma.” If you are going to criticize others, maybe be more aware of your own failures.

Barnie2years replies on Aug 23, 2018:
@Marine, does it matter? I have found that more often than not, every failed marriage has two stories, often vastly different. The first we were too young, the second was an inability to communicate in positive ways (lasted 20+ years anyway), the last was DOA before it happened, but accomplished what we set out to do; keeping a bright young boy in this country so he could have a better chance of a great future. Answer your question? Fear of being alone is a really creepy reason to stay married, let alone get married, regardless of how much family you have around you.

And the government works very hard to get their voters out, puting polling places in churches, senior residences, and other places to make it most convenient for the wealthiest and faithful to cast ballots.

Prostitution, how do you feel about it?
Rincewind02 comments on Aug 16, 2018:
I think that prostitution is a necessary evil. It has been around a long time but I am not in favour of women being trafficked or forced into it. The law in England is a mess, hypocrisy rules.
Barnie2years replies on Aug 16, 2018:
That is of course at least part of the problem. When you make something that people want (and I dare say, need) illegal, it opens the door to criminals stepping in to fill the need. And just as corporations hire undocumented workers because they can abuse them, so do criminal enterprises. The world is full of women looking for a way out of their situations and the criminals have the connections to abuse them. This should not happen, and even in countries with legal prostitution it does, but to a lesser degree. Women who wish to sell their service should be allowed and regulated as every other worker (strippers, groomers, beauticians, welders etc.) and traffickers should be hunted down and locked up like the scum they are.

What do you do when you're unattractive to the opposite sex?
Carla1963 comments on Jul 21, 2018:
It is not your looks, if they don't respond- just move on. i have never really really had any luck with online dating, most of the time it is nice to just chat and hang out, if there is chemistry it will take over.believe me love, lust, and dating have very little to do with looks.
Barnie2years replies on Jul 21, 2018:
In order to find out if there is chemistry, you actually have to have some kind of interaction. Chatting online can be a start, but until you meet eye to eye, it is really kind of hard to tell. If you never even get a response to a hello, or no one reaches out to you, the chemistry thing is pretty much a dead issue. (Speaking from years of experience here)

Barnie2years replies on Jul 19, 2018:
If you read, I am not trying to rip anything away from her. It affected our relationship, and that was fine, the group could support her more than I could, and it provides cultural as well as social cohesion. And as long as she is not trying to drag me into the belief, we can and will be friends. When she chose to present her reason for the belief, I felt entitled to present my reason for not believing. And, as is the case for most people of faith, it didn’t change her belief and I was in no way trying to convert her to mine. If you read anything else into my story, I perhaps didn’t express myself right. Do you make assumptions about everyone?

Not sure where you fit into the financial scale, but you are attacking the wrong end of economic scale in the hope that someday you can attain the upper class at some point. Chances are, unless you are there already, you will not.

@Paul4747 Conservatives are funny!! They accuse liberals of wanting to take money from the middle class to support those who are disadvantaged, while being quite supportive of unregulated capitalism which supports stealing wages and pay from the middle class to inflate the wealth of those in the top ten percent of wealth holders. I have been exposed to that mentality growing up with a father in management. I am proud to call myself a liberal and have my taxes support those who didn’t have the luck to be born into good circumstances. Not sure they have gone extinct. If you consider the deep seated religious inclinations of most farmers, you have to take into account the randomness of their livelihood. When your existence revolves around weather, insect populations and genetics of animals, hoping there is some kind of supernatural force out there protecting you from the worst of those random issues, I would guess, provides a certain amount of comfort. Praying for rain or anything else may have the same effect as doing a rain dance or flipping a coin to a realist (which I feel describes my outlook), I can understand where it might give solace to someone who's very life depends on it.

That animals have feelings and many, if not most, mourn their when one of their own die is not a sign of religious belief. Animals learn from their parents, or group if they are animals who live in packs of some kind. They learn survival techniques, they learn who the leader of their groups are, how to behave toward other members. Just as tame animals learn tricks and how to behave. That they have a ritual of sorts when a member of their group die is no more surprising than that certain creatures mate for life. Maybe they are not acting like us, maybe much of our behavior is natural and we are acting like them, we just give it names and try to hard to justify it.

Barnie2years replies on Jun 16, 2018:
@Akfishlady, it would appear from your statement that you were raped by your brothers, which is no way normal or condoned by anyone except certain Religious groups who justify rape by blaming the female. I can certainly sympathise with your feelings of betrayal towards those who abused you. But it does not necessarily reflect the question of consensual incest, especially between older siblings and not involving procreation. In many states, marriage between first cousins is legal, though overall many feel that is incestuous. And I have known older siblings of opposite genders who lived together for all intent and purpose as married, though whether they were sexually involved is unknown. And they seemed quite happy. My guess is there are at least as many incestual relationships among “good christians’ as there are among non believers.

So essentially any claimed morality vis a vis incest by anyone believing the Bible is the word of their god is total bullshit! ? Throw that back at them.

I would disagree with this, as it makes a whole lot of assumptions and extremes. There are children who grow up severely mistreated that, with some help and kindness become wonderful citizens, caring and loving towards their friends and family. There are many instances of well off, maybe even privileged children becoming monsters, serial killers and even presidents (LOL). The kids involved in the Columbine massacre were average middle class kids from decent families, yet they became vicious killers. There is no black and white when it comes to development of personality and change is possible no matter what the early circumstances.
