Radiators are alloyed to be cast thin so they melt a lot easier in a small furnace. If you dump in a whole engine block the furnace will crash cool and that's the end of the firing! We will use an intermittent cupolette to melt the metal.

@misstuffy There used to be several small dairies around my area that had raw milk available but the govt shut it down. Now the dairy world is dominated by those huge facilities where they milk thousands of animals to death. What makes me mad is how they conceal that fact from the public. A non industrialized cow has a lifespan of 25 or so years while the industrialized animal lasts 4-6. They get about 45 lbs of milk from the industrial animal every day. That kind of production is exceptionally short term and short sighted.

btroje comments on Feb 25, 2018:
ok what is sprued up?
farmboy2017 replies on Feb 25, 2018:
It's really the wrong terminology. It should be called gates and vents. The gate is a wax cup or funnel attached to a large diameter sprue (wax) that allows the molten metal to enter the mold. The vents allow air that occupies the interior cavity of the mold to escape 'in front' of the molten metal. When all of the wax is melted out of a mold, whether it's sand or a ceramic slurry shell, air, then fills the space that is now void of wax. So a vent must be provided to allow the metal to push out the air, otherwise the mold either blows out or you have an incomplete casting. Kinda complex but kinda simple, too.

farmboy2017 replies on Feb 25, 2018:
These tool forms are like hammers and hatchets. Made from foundry wax. The next step is to pack sand around them, melt out the wax and then cast molten iton into the empty space that was occupied by the wax. The vertical risers are air vents and the funnel shape is where the iron goes in.
