@Flyingsaucesir I do but early on I installed a propane stove (for heating). It's a nice stove and it takes me years to go through a tank. This stove is only used to augment the heat when the temperature goes below freezing (which it seldom does). The electric are all the low wattage Envi convection wall heaters. https://www.eheat.com/ Here all the power is solar or hydro. I have solar panels which help and the county started installing a massive array on another island. https://www.commerce.wa.gov/energy-blog/orcas-power-and-light-microgrid-and-solar-array/

There are three levels: above subsistence (meaning producing waste), at subsistence (having just enough without producing waste) and below subsistence (not having enough and often living off of other's waste). There are approx. 1/4 of the world living above subsistence, 1/2 living at subsistence and 1/4 below subsistence. At 8 billion people now the math should be easy.

@silverotter11 Unfortunately things change and we need to change to meet the problems some of our past practices have brought upon us. The United States used to have two centers, Ellis and Angel Island to quarantine newcomers lest they bring in communicable diseases and to try and check out whether or not the were not bringing in problems from their own country. We used to have a quota of some 250,000 but after the Vietnam war that crept up to accommodate all the people that were displaced when the Vietnamese communists won (I visited the country for a month and the people are doing well despite communism). I also had to file for a visa in Germany and know of how things are supposed to work. Bottom line it is a very complicated situation and most have no idea of the impact of the harm our large immigration quota puts on the country, and indirectly, the rest of the world. One important step to learning some uncomfortable facts to stop blaming people and thinking this is purely a racist issue. It is not always so. Remember, I was married to an immigrant and she felt even stronger than I. I learned a lot from her.

@rainmanjr At one time the population problem was clear to most. I joined Zero Population Growth (on the local board) to one of the very first environmental groups created when the environment first became a serious issue. Population Demographics is a real science which people seem to forget. Around the turn of the century things started to change and more and more organizations saw the need for more money to get their message out. ZPG courted some big moneyed people (like Ted Turner). Problem is, when wealth and big corporations enter the picture the corporations demand something in return and that something is to not go against the constant growth mantra. The National Geographic is now owned by Disney. However, the word on overpopulation is slowly starting to re-emerge. In the latest 'Smithsonian' there was an article about 'Canned Lion Hunts' *"...conflict between lions and people is enormous, especially given Africa's exploding human population."* Later the article went on, *"Given the economic situation in S. Africa with almost 35% unemployment and poverty crushing the country, it seems unlikely that a massive, expensive old folks home for captive-bred lions is a plausible option."*

Sorry, I totally disagree. Developed countries cannot be the worlds social workers and bring in billions (the number is accurate) of people in other countries that are suffering. The usual excuse of what horrible things we have done to others does not work. I have been to Vietnam. We went with a brother and his Vietnamese wife and spent a month going from Saigon to Ha Long Bay. We saw the country as few do. In Vietnam it's call the American war. This is a country, the size of Calif. with over 90 million people. There was garbage and poverty everywhere yet having big families was paramount with the people. Sometime (almost always) people create the conditions that they eventually have to live. Haiti is a prime example. Compared with the Dominican Republic one can clearly see how two parts of the same island have completely different lives. There are some who push the idea of 'open borders.' In reality this is nothing short on insane. In the end everybody will suffer. My late partner, in immigrant from Iran, once asked her 2nd graders, "what's more important, people or dirt?" We live in a natural system and when we destroy that system, which we are rapidly doing, no one will survive.

Because he was black he had few white friends but lots of Latino friends and learned to speak Spanish fluently. The first time he came to Europe (Spain) he fell in love with it and there was very little racism. He married a Spanish woman and found a job with the University we worked for. He and I were best buds and he was always making self-deprecating jokes about being black. For example, there was a river in Gemany, the Negar. An advisor once visited the town above the river, known as the Obernegar (above the river - Ober can also mean boss). The guy took a picture of the town sign and Sammy hung that picture over his desk. We were always playing jokes on each other, sometimes against blacks and some against whites. Don't get me started about the position of the day, using gummi bears, I would put on his desk.

You can get what is known as a nuclear cataract. I know it sounds really dangerous but, with today's technology it's not. Our lenses are free floating in a sac. When we replace a living, soft lens with a hard one sometimes the lens will rub against the sac and cause clouding and a 2ndary cataract is formed. The cataract is just zapped with a laser which burns it out. Easy Peasy.

@SeaGreenEyez My comment about the drug being produced in large quantities was not about China but Mexico. The article was in the Atlantic. I agree totally with this issue of our poor concern about decent health care. We are sooo far behind even some developing countries in this area. This is clearly a rich - poor issue as the rich don't want to have to get the same (dis) service as every one else. In developed countries it also means more taxes. There is another area people often miss is that in countries like ours with a high immigration (again policy not people) rate means more cultures and languages make it much more expensive to serve everyone. It's a big problem with public schools which some (corporations) want to hide.

This latest report said, in the Seattle area, drug overdoses is now killing more than Covid and some numbers were given. Of course statistics can always be fudged. When I post I welcome discussions about the report. I often learn things and get into dialogue with others, which I need. One way to exercise one's brain is through dialogue. As far as the suicide part goes, that is a touchy subject with me. A letter appeared on the front page of our local paper which made me mad. Suicide should not be considered a problem when people are suffering (from some disease). I wrote a letter which appeared in all three of our local papers. I posted this letter several times on the site.

I (or rather my ghost) posted several times about a study done in Germany about how owning a gun actually changes people. Guns often become a form of drug and once one has one they are more apt to use it for even minor issues. Most of the teachers I've known are not hard conservatives. Liberalism often is about education levels and teachers are more educated than a lot of people. My late partner was a teacher and was heads and shoulders smarter than the average person (and I'm not being prejudiced others have said the same thing).
