I thought about the reasons of why some men are like that. With the Chinese 1 child law female babies were often aborted leaving an overabundance of males which, as you said, can mean males left without a partner. I think, for some, either their genetics, culture of childhood led to dysfunctions and sane women would want nothing to do with them. My late partner's husband was like that, extreme narcissism, with parents who let the two brothers (his brother was the same) know they weren't wanted plus the cultural tendency for extreme Iranian male paternalism led to undesirables. This, in turn, led to anger which only exacerbated the problem.

@Marionville One of the things I learned in taking European History (while in Europe) was that all history is complicated and if one wants to get work in the field they must specialize in a particular country and even area. All countries are broken up into regions and each region has it's own historical 'facts' which often counter those of another region. At least Richard was left alone and not dug back up and desecrated which sometimes happens to rulers of the past.

After the fall of Enron we acquired the whole AA group (in Seattle) which doubled our numbers. Later a PBS Frontline report showed many of the actions of KPMG were illegal (I saw our office making up fake companies and issuing things as 'Opinion letters' to dodge tax schemes for the wealthy). The 'Frontline' report said the SEC issue a hefty fine for the company and that having a consulting group presented a conflict of interest for a company devoted to compliance and had to be disbanded.

@Marionville I did know of the burial of Henry VII under a parking lot. I can't imagine how this lot could have been created without some knowledge of the burial and even more astounding was it's recovery. The latest antique road trip is now in Scotland and there are some interesting historical facts like how sword dancing got started. I see the narrow one lane roads we drove on our trip to N. Scotland are ubiquitous throughout the island. In these shows I never see another car coming in the opposite direction. We made harrowing trip along the 'pass of the Cattle' from Inverness to Apple Cross. Most of the time it was not oncoming vehicles but flocks of sheep gathering in the middle of the road. It was both scary and funny.

@Marionville I love to learn little tidbits like this. Interesting, as a good friend in Heidelberg, Malcolm Martindale was from Leicester. We once made a road trip to his famous school, Stoneybrook. He and his brother were sent there as his parents didn't get along. When it came time to attend college he had to take a vow of later becoming a priest. He had too many questions and left. We also visited on (of possibly many) the restaurant where the king knighted the loin of beef and is how sirloin got it's name. I once asked him how to pronounce Leicester and he said simply lester. We would take a annual ferry from Calais to England and load up on Bangers and English Cider. Those were good times.

When ZPG (which had been one of the first environmental groups and was evidence based and respected) got a new Director the issue was funding. The new director tried to woo such wealthy people as Ted Turner (who was married to Jane Fonda at the time). All of a sudden the name got changed (Population Connection) which only advocated for family planning and immigration was removed from the population growth equation. PBS had a report (I have a copy) that said some anonymous donor (implied corporations) gave $100 M to ZPG and the Sierra Club to get rid of any talk of immigration and they did. We talk about how bean counters are taking over the country and stock options and investments have become sacrosanct. However, may retirees (I was once one of those) fund their retirement on investments. In the end we are all culpable to the breakdowns in our society due to money needs/wants.

@HippieChick58 I agree. At one time a former partner and I had 3 cats. Each had it's own identity and personality and seldom was there a problem. One cat was highly intelligent and he always amazed us at his antics. We named him Cosmo (Cosmic kitty - after the Seinfeld character) due to his escapades. The first one was with his buddy, Max. He came up with a way to watch what was going on by climbing up the back of clothing hanging in a closet. He liked water and would chase water from a hose. A third cat was an Abyssinian female. She was seemingly aloof from the other two but once we caught her following Cosmo as he walked around the block. She was keeping an eye on him. She was named Aspro - Greek for white. Just a few of his antics. I miss those cats.

A recent case you are describing was the fires in California where hundreds were left homeless. The way I see it we are responsible for our own citizens not the rest of the world. Taking in millions (the number is approx 2 million a year) of people from other countries will only make things harder for us. Most of us agree we should not be the worlds policeman but, we must also not be the world's social workers. We have enough problems at home.

Might be some pushback on that. It would be good to try and control the hyper testosterone driven males until they reach maturity (whenever that is). One Sheriff in a small town was asked how he would reduce crime in his area. He said to lock up all males until they were 35. I had a younger brother who was always getting into petty crimes. When he was in his 60's (he went on to become a lawyer) I asked him why he did all the things he did. He told me he asks himself that all the time. He just doesn't know, he just did. Who knows maybe excess testosterone turns males into zombies.

I did a lot of construction work and the no. one item was climbing on people's roofs and installing TV antennas. Getting this in our apartment in the old city was a big treat. I know how you feel but there's a lot of good stuff on TV. PBS and even Netflix have a lot to offer and not just for entertainment but knowledge as well. I can picture that huge TV. My late partner also had such a TV. Since it was the old style cathode ray variety, she named it her 'big Butt' TV. Later, a friend gave us her older flat screen (no butt) which had a larger screen and much better picture. I put it in a cabinet so when not in use it's not seen. Before we left in 2011 it was still a great place to live. It has changed, though.

@puff The huge problem is that too many, shallow, weak and cowardly politicians (I think we all know who is meant here) use this time as a photo op and show gullible fools they really care (when they do not). Therefore this sort of thing is and should be against the rules and decent politicians follow it. When someone who calls military people (especially when they are killed in battle) losers (when they themselves got daddy to pay for a bogus deferment) only reflects on them and the fools that believe they are sincere. I was i the military during the Viet Nam era. I could have been sent to that war, but was not. However, it cost me two extra years of service. I did get injured and spent 9 months in a military hospital and am now disabled. Still, if I were injured or killed in a war zone I would really be upset for someone like tRump to be using my situation as a way to feign care in order to get fools to vote for him. Biden and other decent politicians will not use others sufferings for their own gain. Where was 'W' whose stupidity started the whole debacle by first invading Iraq (which had nothing to do with 9/11 but was simply to avenge Saddam's attempt to kill his father after the first Iraq war) and then finally going into Afghanistan? Everyone here needs to remember it was tRump who first started the pullout and did so in such a way the Democrats could not stop it.

Those seats were sooo nice one had a hard time getting off. One could control the water (spray, temp) and even the drying temps. pedigojr replies on Aug 30, 2024:
@Marionville Unfortunately, especially among introverts, we sometimes have difficulty understanding how others feel about what we say or do. I think for most men, mansplaining is not intentional but just our nature. It's another thing we have to learn to first recognize the problem and then pay attention to how we present knowledge we may have acquired. Some areas of which I've become passionate about I can get carried away and not think about how my explaining is going over. A former, long term partner, (before my last one) was good in English and helped me write letters. She said I may know something about a subject but I have to present my knowledge and, at the same time, be cognizant that others may not know what I'm talking about. Her knowledge of spelling and grammar also helped a lot. Once I got published in various medias I was hooked. With my late partner English was her 2nd language (which she did not learn until her mid-20's). She had almost no accent but writing was often difficult for her. In Farsi there are no or few adjectives. When she wrote or spoke she often left off the adjectives. As an extreme extrovert she became the speak and I the writer. We made our personality differences work.

@Marionville The artical went on to say a very few got this through brain damage but with the overwhelming number it was a genetic defect. As I said I often wonder if there are several genes involved as some, as I, an introvert, have trouble associating names and faces whereas others (extroverts) remember everyone once they have met them. My late partner was such a person and it often amazed me. When I was still going to mass a priest (who I liked as he was different) would walk up and down the aisles shaking hands and greeting people by name. If there was a new person he would ask their name, think for a second and it would be imprinted for the next time he met them.

The one thing on the rise in Japan is energy use due to the use of machines as robots. The huge problem with our 'cornucopian' based economists is they are loath to change habits. It was shown the first new VW bug model almost didn't get made as the industry thought such a change would fail and cause the industry to crash. We all know how this has now created a trend. The thing that cost VW a huge price was their deceit in the pollution levels from their cars. When the Roman empire was crashing, due to the governments inability to manage and serve a large number of people coming into Rome from the outlying areas, there was a loss in Roman citizens and, of course the government tried to push the citizens to have more kids. I just saw a long list of different pollsters and all but one put Kamala ahead from 1 to 6 percentage points. And this just during her first 3 weeks. The DNC might help her numbers even more. I predict the closer we get to the election the more her numbers will go up. This campaign present a huge juxtaposition between hope and doing good things for the average American and just plain nastiness and (2025 project) doing terrible things to the average American.

Canada has gone too far with these assistant suicide laws and actions. Often enough Canadain doctors, mental and physical ask their patients. Who are in a painful life crisis . It's surprising how many homeless people have been offered suicide options.

There is no death with dignity. It's an oxy for the moron. On the other hand there are lots of people in nursing homes that are barely alive thanks to many good Christians. My stepdad was in one such place and my daughter used to work in them.
pedigojr replies on Aug 20, 2024:
Death with all kinds of suffering is not dignified no matter how one spins this. Ones life is their own and so is one's death. Exceptions don't make the rule but, in the end it's up to the individual to decide. I also strongly support an euthanasia program like they have in Switzerland and the Netherlands.

And not one sentence about desalinization?!!
pedigojr replies on Aug 19, 2024:
The major problem with desalination is it takes a huge amount of energy. This is what's used in desert countries like Dubai. They have the oil and the energy. The question for me is what happens to all the salt that's extracted? People living here along the coast (usually the wealthy) have been having salt water intrusion in their wells for years and some have joined up to install a desal system. It's pretty expensive water. I've installed a rain catchment system which is pure water (my well is very hard with lots of iron). The only issue is one must practice water conservation during the dry summer months.

Among a lot of other things. I heard a report on NPR this morning and looked it up. However, I found two things and one is his criticisms of Walz serving in Iraq but in a non-combat role. *"Vice presidential candidate JD Vance has recently criticized the military service record of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, his opponent in the 2024 election."* *"Vance argued that Walz’s retirement ahead of his National Guard Unit’s deployment to Iraq and his implication that he served in a combat zone suggested “stolen valor garbage.” Stolen valor is a serious accusation in military circles that refers to someone making false claims about their service. Ohio Sen. JD Vance served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a combat correspondent for nearly four years, according to a spokesperson for the Marines. Vance spent six months in Iraq during his time with the Marines. His deployment began in August 2005 and ended in February 2006, the Marines spokesperson confirmed. But Vance did not experience combat in Iraq and has not publicly claimed that he did."* The subject of the NPR story this morning was about his book:"Hillbilly Elegy." *"Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis, the 2016 memoir from Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance, once again began flying off the shelves after former President Donald Trump named Vance as his running mate. Many have turned to the memoir to find out the story of Vance’s upbringing, a core part of why he’s on the Republican ticket to begin with. But the book also brings along a host of assumptions that many authors still find not to be true."* *"Pulitzer-winning author Barbara Kingsolver said she felt that it was her duty to tell a different story of Appalachian life than the one that Vance presented in the book."* *“It used the same old victim-blaming trope. It was like a hero story: ‘I got out of here, I went to Yale,’” Kingsolver said of Vance. “‘But those lazy people, you know, just don't have ambitions. They don’t have brains. That’s why they’re stuck where they are.’ I disagree. And that’s my job, to tell a different story.”* https://www.kpbs.org/news/national/2024/08/17/hillbilly-elegy-is-back-in-the-spotlight-these-appalachians-write-a-different-tale So depend on those 'lazy' and 'no brained' people for votes but then mock them behind their backs. Typical Republican.

There's a lot they can't do but they still have a lot of supporters just like them. I once told someone they didn't even know what antifa meant. He (pretended to) think for a while and then asked what it meant. What really gets me is the MAGA use of 'woke' so I looked it up. Just as I thought something they use that is only bad to them and often something to be proud of for the saner amongst us. https://www.npr.org/2023/07/19/1188543449/what-does-the-word-woke-really-mean-and-where-does-it-come-from

@Marionville It's not really a crisis but it does require some heavy soul searching and doing the right thing. As her father I should not be meddling in her marriage, hence the therapist. She lost her job last year but got full severance and then unemployment. That time is up and she has a 15 yo son who is on her side.

When I'm in the gym I listen to one of our classical stations. It helps me with my workout. It also provides some new pieces which I love. I was doing some stretching when this piece came along and it really moved me so I wrote the particulars down. My daughter's in a critical time in her life so I will send this to her.
