A gorgeous male polyphemus (on my hand) and an equally lovely female promethea that came to my blacklights last night. I'm taking both to a 2nd grade Bug Day program and then they will be set free.

Pandora wanted to come out for a stroll today when I was cleaning her tank. She's a ruby-eyed lavender Cali king. She's also both striped and banded (Cali kings are normally banded, but there are striped morphs; sometimes you find a combo in the same...

Here's a fascinating insect I met today. A beautiful example of Batesian mimicry, this "bumble bee" is actually a robber fly in the genus, Laphria.

The arrival of two baby anacondas at the New England Aquarium took staffers by surprise. Why? Because there were only female snakes in the exhibit. 🐍 (WGBH News)

Alright Insectra, here we go. This is the cocoon I found over the winter next to the house. It was in a barberry bush next to a flowering crab tree. I am sure that was the host tree. We found a cocoon a few years ago in that tree, but it seemed ...

An exciting find as I was leaving work this morning! This is a spotted turtle (Clemmys guttata)--the first I've ever seen in PA, though I frequently found them in Maryland. I reported it to PARS and I'm hoping to hear back from them. I think it ...

The cover photo for this group reminds me of one of the funnest things we did with our son (who just graduated as Valediction from his HS this weekend FYI) when he was a boy. We loved finding praying mantises in our yard and one time we created a ...

I just want to put this out there. I saw a post in a FB group by a woman who picked a wood turtle up from the middle of the road and took it back where it came from. That turtle will attempt to cross the road again.

Got this set up finally. I still have to build a larger filter, just have to borrow a drill. It holds 110 gallons . I put 2 of my larger turtles in and I'm watching them closely for now.

I saw this big female box turtle crossing my parents' driveway earlier this week. Tonight, she is digging a nest alongside the driveway, a bit further up. If she lays eggs there I will place a screen top to keep the skunks and raccoons out.

Dung beetles! I apologize for the image quality. There are three in the shot, one is in the middle of digging a hole for the dung, another clings to the dung, and the third has been beat out by the other two. It soon moved on. These were seen in the ...

So, I saw something new today. Whilst I walked in the mountains with a good friend of mine, we stumbled upon SEVERAL ticks that were questing on old scat. There were at least 10 of them. @Insectra you may not have an answer to this, but why scat? ...
