I made a new friend today. He was the most mellow black rat snake I've encountered, and they are a very mellow species. I walked up on him slowly and scooped him up. He made no effort to strike or escape. He did however land a stinging tail slap, but...

I had some fun trying to photograph Alypia octomaculata, the 8 spotted forester moth. This is a striking, day-flying moth whose larvae feed on Vitaceae plants. Unfortunately, I didn't get a decent shot with the hindwings exposed so you can only see...

My 9yo son is a master anole wrangler. He has discovered that if you put them on their backs they seem to have a tonic reflex and they become calm and docile.

My buddy and I traveled to Union County today to find a copperhead for me to photograph. We hiked about 7 miles along Penn's Creek and didn't see a single copperhead. We did, however, find 5 wood turtles, 3 snapping turtles, 3 rattlesnakes, a black...

My Argentinian black-and-white Tegu is just coming out of her first brumation. I named her Pandora. She is not named after the music streaming Pandora. Anybody know what she is named after?

Today's sighting. What's with reptiles and asphalt? smh This black rat snake fled off of the road when I approached; so I didn't get a chance to pet him.

I saw this big female box turtle crossing my parents' driveway earlier this week. Tonight, she is digging a nest alongside the driveway, a bit further up. If she lays eggs there I will place a screen top to keep the skunks and raccoons out.
