Just the other afternoon - I went to collect an egg from one of my girls - and this yellow rat had beaten me to it ! It was a beauty, and large - over 5ft. Guess the hens are helping this one get larger still !

This is also in my profile - but I wanted to share with a welcoming crowd ... This gal was oh so mellow, and allowed me to come respectfully close for a shot - never moved. Love 'em - those with venom included.

Driving back roads near Joshua Tree, we met this snake. Staying in the car seemed like the best option. It was the st snake I have seen in the wild.

Since my parents are getting older they've lost interest (what little interest they had to begin with) in gardening. However, they're fine with letting the raised beds grow up with milkweed and dogbane. I was poking around their garden yesterday, ...

Pretty classic caterpillar damage to the Virginia creeper vines that grow up the outside of my parents' house. I'll have get out there tonight, or some night soon, and snoop around with the black light. Something good is living there, but I'm not ...

I am hoping someone here knows what this fellow turned into when he grew up. It was the largest caterpillar I have ever encountered. Found in Long Beach, California.

Cool mornings make for slow insects! I doubt I would have been able to get a pic of this robber fly with my phone, otherwise. This is Efferia albibarbis, a great friend to have around. Robber flies are agile predators that feed on nuisance insects ...
