Thank you , I have been wondering how your tomatoes are going. The dedication effort and sheer hard work you do for your garden, you have my deepest heartfelt respect.
In the tropics, I just have to time my tomatoes to bypass the fruit fly season, but generally they grow all year round. My favourite variety is Black Russian because it has not been so much messed with and still tastes like a tomato, for the bushy determinates I prefer the Roma variety.
Black Krim and Black Russian are THE BOMB!
Tomatoes need a greenhouse in Alaska to do very well... I like Bush Early Girl hybrid tomato variety from Tomato Growers Supply and am very pleased with the results. They are very disease resistant and do very well in 5 gal. Containers in my greenhouse. I have grown standard Early Girl tomatoes before, but as a standard tomato plant they would grow too tall inside my greenhouse. Bush Early Girl is a hybrid that is a more compact and sturdy bush type tomato and also listed as VFFNT disease resistant. Which stands for: V = Verticillium wilt FF = Fusarium, races 1 & 2 N = Nematodes T = Tobacco mosaic virus-resistant. The plants held up very well just as indicated. They also produced larger fruit about 6-8 oz up to softball size and big enough for slicing on a burger. Also cracking was not a problem with this variety.
Great!
@MsKathleen can you message me in the Au-A-A forum? I need to see if messaging works. Thank you.
@Kurtn - hello from Alaska..
@Kurtn No, because I am not in that forum, and you appear to have messaging turned off, anyway. However, I received a message yesterday and was able to respond, so maybe it is working again.
I am looking forward to planting my tomatoes. I love fresh off the vine tomatoes.
Me, too. And I hope to be able to grow them again.
