Psychologically, I suspect the reasons are not happy ones. He may have already held distorted negative beliefs that he was hopelessly plain or homely and therefore thought the ornamentations would create bizarre interest, but at least interest.
It surely was NOT to increase his job prospects.

You forgot the word he's probably thinking..."why not"...it's for folk with an identity crisis. it makes them "unique". Can you imagine this guy -how he'd look in a funeral? I shouldn't laugh...sorry.
