I made a suggestion once to launch all trash and used uranium rods on a rocket into the sun.
My ex-wife replied, "Oh, so you want to pollute the sun now?"
Paper cups??
Most paper cups used today are lined with plastic and can not be recycled. They all end up in landfills.
Even that stainless steel one is a limited use. The answer is to figure out a better garbage system. Biodegradable everything that can be. Use renewable resources to create it. Efficient, convenient, affordable recycling. We mostly have a trash flow issue. Landfills etc are not a good use of land or material. We have how many people on the planet? Even if you use 'long term' items, that is still a buttload of trash. The best options to deal with it are developing the technologies that will take care of the loose plastic (like the organisms that can eat plastic). Start at the landfills, go through and recycle, recycle, recycle. Mass coordination for correct garbage disposal and composting. Then look at better manufacturing practices that rely on the recycled materials and renewable resources.
A reusable stainless steel cup can be used indefinitely. I have used the same one for over ten years.
@BDair Until the handle or lid breaks or it is bent beyond use. My point is that nothing lasts forever.
The handle is broken, and the lid is long gone from mine. But I still use it every day. The point is that we can not recycle ourselves out of this crisis. Everything we consume needs to be part of a cradle to cradle circular economy. If it can't be recycled, then it needs to be biodegradable or compostable.
People are beginning to gain awareness, but we have a long way to go.
@BDair That is pretty much exactly what I posted.
