It's been like that. It was just in November 2019, when the United States became a net exporter of all oil products, including both refined petroleum products and crude oil. As of March 2015, 85% of crude oil imports came from (in decreasing volume): Canada, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Venezuela, and Colombia. (Wikipedia)
