As a Canadian, growing up, I always though that the US had so much more happening, all the good stuff and fun stuff and smart stuff.
I'm not sure if it changed as I grew older, or if I began to see it as it actually was/is.
We didn't really learn about American history in Canadian schools (or much Canadian history for that matter) so as I learn more, both historical and current facts, I find myself saddened at the loss of what I though the US was.
From 1950-1968 the US had a graduated tax system that relied heavily on taxing those with the most and that benefited most from government (it doesn't matter to a poor person if we have the FDIC, DEC,military, or any of the other gov't rgulators) Starting with Nixon, a slow dismantling and privatizing of gov't services began. Gov't spending on infrastucture slowed, (education, social welfare, transportation and consumer protection). That brought us top where we are today.
