My first male Actias dubernardi, from the latest group of caterpillars, to eclose. He's so handsome! I'm thinking of trying to pair him with a female Actias luna for some hybrids. It's been known to work, though not commonly. The last pic is the ...

A new species of Saturniid for my sheet: Callosamia promethea, the Promethea moth. These are typically day fliers, but apparently females will come to lights.

Neat bugs! The larval form, called a hellgrammite, and female and male dobsonflies. The larvae live underwater in rivers and streams. The adults are primarily nocturnal fliers and often show up to my black light set-up during the late spring and...

A spotted salamander, a Jefferson's salamander and an Eastern newt, just 3 of the 41 salamanders I found last night while surveying some vernal pools. Final tally was: 1 spotted, 2 Eastern newts, and 38 Jefferson's. It is still early in the season,...

I heard scratchy, rustling noises today and realized that it's coming from my Actias dubernardi cocoons. They're wriggling and writhing with life. I can't wait until they emerge as huge, beautiful moths. They're due to eclose within the next 2 ...

A new one for my lights last night: a predaceous diving beetle. This one didn't come in until around 3am, so I caught it for some pics this morning. I've frequently found the larvae of this species in shallow ponds and vernal pools, but I've rarely ...

Strangest critter discovery... This is from several years ago- a brutal mystery. This is a vole's head, upper teeth defiantly latched into a crawlspace vent that evidently looked like an escape route; but the screen inside prevented passage. So, the ...
