@Lauren Won't happen. We live in a post-truth world. Just last night I spoke to a woman [who has a school-aged child] about that new CNN report about guns in America. She flat out said to my face that she doesn't care what the facts are or what the numbers show, she doesn't care if she's completely wrong, she will still continue to be "wrong" because she still thinks she's right. It was a much longer conversation that contained even more ridiculous statements than that, and it made me want to pound my head into a brick wall. There is NOTHING that can fix that. If you can't agree on, or flat out don't care about, facts, what could I possibly say to you to change your mind? The only thing that you'll hear is stuff that reaffirms your beliefs. We. Are. Done. Shit is only going to get worse from here, believe that.

And he wasn't unarmed (obviously) as your suggesting I would be. And he shouldn't have been there armed because it probably wasn't legal for him to possess that weapon for any purpose other than hunting, which would be a hard sell in the middle of a city during social unrest. And how someone * feels * about something shouldn't really have any bearing on what the law should be. Given what I've read by you before, I figured you were too logical and rational to make such a silly argument.

ChestRockfield replies on Nov 18, 2021:
@skado In no way would I describe breathing as a desire, or relatable to the desire to sail, as the cessation of one of them cannot be accomplished by inaction. That aside, I think I get your point, but I don't think it allows us to escape the reality of free will being illusory. In your last two examples, smoking vs cheating, one who believes in agency may see those as different, possibly because of the type of behavior it is, I'm not sure, but from the perspective of someone who recognizes there is no will, these campaigns have different outcomes simply because one happened to be a more convincing argument to the subconscious minds of more people. Is it because people who cheat already don't think it's wrong, so it's very difficult to convince them it is, whereas people may start to smoke before they grasp how dangerous it is and then can sometimes be convinced to stop? We can't know for sure, but that's an educated guess. The point of all that, however, is that it likely doesn't matter how tightly bound to any adaptation a given trait is because we're not actually * choosing * anything. At this point, we have gone on so many tangents and muddied the water that I'm not exactly sure the point you're making here. Is it simply that religion may be more adaptive and possibly beneficial than we [atheists] think/admit, and that we shouldn't be so quick to want to dispense of it? If that's the case, I have a hard time seeing that, even if your claims about it being more adaptive than other human creations, it follows logically that we preserve/revere (or whatever you're suggesting we do) it. For instance, being a light colored moth had to be near the top of the charts of traits that were tightly bound to adaptation, but when trees started getting covered with soot during the Industrial Revolution, would it have been prudent for moths to wish to preserve their light coloring? Certainly not. I mean you even said it yourself, something may have been adaptive at one time and no longer is. So if you're trying to first convince people religion is adaptive, then connect the dots between that and 'we shouldn't wish to dispense of it' (again, not sure if that's your point), you would need to also show it's still beneficial (which would be an incredibly tall order). I think I've probably gone too far before first verifying what your actual argument is, so I'll pause here.

Something seems so different now, and I don't think that it's only that I'm older and fatter than I used to be. Anyway, that's part of the reason why I gave up looking. Exactly. The premise is ridiculous. It's like saying 99.9% of people who aren't dirty fuckin' criminals don't wind up in jail. The facts are these: In 2018, 4,775 young people ages 10-24 were victims of homicide - an average of 13 each day. According to a 2019 study, gun injuries are the second-leading cause of death among U.S. children and teens and the leading cause of death of among high school students. There are more than 393 million guns in circulation in the United States — approximately 120.5 guns for every 100 people. 1.7 million children live with unlocked, loaded guns - 1 out of 3 homes with kids have guns. Between 2014 and 2018, more than 15,000 children (ages 19 and under) died due to firearms, and at least 13,000 sustained unintentional firearm-related injury or death An emergency department visit for non-fatal assault injury places a youth at 40% higher risk for subsequent firearm injury. People that die from accidental shooting were more than three times as likely to live in a home with a firearm Among younger children (ages 0-12 years) who are killed by a firearm, 85% are killed in their own home People who report “firearm access” are at twice the risk of homicide and more than three times the risk of suicide compared to those who do not own or have access to firearms. Suicide rates are much higher in states with higher rates of gun ownership, even after controlling for differences among states for poverty, urbanization, unemployment, mental illness, and alcohol or drug abuse.

@TheMiddleWay We discussed that as well, and since I didn't think it was pertinent to the exercise, I didn't bother talking about it. But since we were assuming the the god of the Bible * actually * dictated the Ten Commandments, it was also a given that said god has his reasons for instructing mankind to worship no other gods or idols. Since the point of the challenge is to find a commandment that the current list * didn't * cover but should have, as opposed to a useless or superfluous commandment that he did, the determination of how religious and non-religious would view the removal of a commandment was irrelevant. Also, it could be agreed by religious and non-religious alike that a commandment against something both groups find detestable where there wasn't one already would be an improvement.

I never said transgendered individuals don't experience prejudice, but Diallo was vehemently hated by almost everyone. There are piles of shit that will always treat different people poorly, but if you look at "normal" rational people, you won't see * hatred * of transgendered individuals. ChestRockfield replies on Nov 3, 2021:
@Fernapple So this does a really good job of explaining what * is * in regards to this debate, and per our last exchange, I was saying it was unfortunate we were not able to discuss what * ought to be. * I suppose it's beneficial to have this potential reasoning in our back pockets to help understand why people may react the way they do. But does it solve our ought to? Why is it that society should have no say whatsoever when it comes to gender, but almost exclusive rights are held by everyone * but * the individual to conclude on race? I mean, I agree with you that it * feels * like that's the right thing, but is it really? I mean I know I can be wrong about something feeling correct. It * feels * like I have free will. Even knowing I don't doesn't change how much it feels like I do. Most people * feel * like Michael Vick deserved everything he got, and probably much, much more, but did he? Or at the very least, are all other punishments too lenient? Should someone who drinks and drives and kills a human being really get a lighter punishment? Should people that contribute to the horrible treatment and inhumane slaughter of animals literally every single day of their lives be unencumbered by even reminder they're doing so, but Vick's transgressions against a few dogs should lose him his career and land him in federal prison for almost 2 years? (Don't bother mentioning it was technically for gambling, because we both know that's not why he was punished so harshly.) So in pursuit of what ought to be, we should do our best to exclude our feelings from the deliberations. As for the legal definition portion, I know we * do * need them (currently) but * should * we need them? For instance, should someone's gender be of interest to others? Should we eventually get to a point where those designations are irrelevant?

ChestRockfield replies on Nov 3, 2021:
@TheMiddleWay So you've made a similar claim before, that the * lie * is what makes the difference. I asked you to imagine someone being up front and honest at the start of living the truth of their trans-racial life and trying to imagine how that would go. I think I know that the person would still face horrible backlash, but would be willing to bet every last dollar I own that they wouldn't be applauded, draped across magazine covers, and named black person of the year. But I suppose that imagining these things isn't really even a necessary exercise. I think the shear fact that society even probes these people and performs accusatory "investigative journalism" type actions into their lives prompting the lies in the first place does all the leg work to prove my point for me. And I think your definition muddies the water a bit. It says race refers to physical characteristics of which she had, so convincingly, that practically no one thought she * wasn't * black until she was outed, while your quoted definition of ethnicity includes ancestry which everyone has assumes she has none. So even the distinction you're trying to draw as a reason to point to, to claim the ire is deserved doesn't really hold up under scrutiny. Furthermore, simply looking at backlash for cultural appropriation (not even being trans-racial) strongly points to the fact that there would be no "correct" way to live trans-racially. If the lie, or the race/ethnicity difference really was the only difference between Diallo/Jenner, there would be a way to live trans-racially and be applauded for it. I can't put the burden of proof on you for that, but I think we all know deep down that that is so self-evident that we don't * need * any proof.

Are you suggesting that the accolades, publicity, and monetary gain that could have gone to female women * didn't * negatively affect those female women?! "The major problems in this discussion for me is the scarcity of data points re: trans race." Should your lack of knowledge of data points prevent you from assessing the situations congruently and logically? "Maybe they are all like I'm portraying dolenzal as opportunistic. Maybe they are all as I portray Jenner as motivated by identity" Again, why are you assuming the best case scenario for those that want to change the social construct assigned to them at birth regarding gender, but the worst case scenario for those that want to change the social construct assigned to them at birth regarding race? If there was a roit at a Target, would you find it disturbing if the cops assumed all the white people inside were there to try to protect the store while assuming all the black people were there to loot it? Why are you making assumptions at all? Just deal with the facts and form logically-consistent opinions. I don't see where I'm making any fallacious arguments. I do see where you are making logically inconsistent ones, though. As a matter of fact, I don't know that you can even characterize what I've said about this as an assertive argument one way or the other. I'm simply asking why the two cases are being treated differently, and while I do have a personal opinion on where I stand, I haven't been advocating one way or the other in this debate. I have simply been asking, for well over a year now, what the fundamental difference is between these cases and haven't found one that holds up under scrutiny.

@Triphid The self-named group "CONSERVATIVE ATHEISTS"... What is so difficult about this??
This is mostly just an excuse to share the attached cartoon, but here's my prompt: Have you ever had...
ChestRockfield comments on Oct 30, 2021:
Yes. Ish. With 3 different girlfriends we brought another woman into bed. None, however, were "according to Hoyle" threesomes where everyone has sex with everyone, but they were pretty close and still awesome. Can't say any part of them was disappointing because we all did only what we were ...
ChestRockfield replies on Oct 31, 2021:
@resserts I think if people think about it for a bit, most would come to that conclusion. If two people are doing stuff with the third, without doing stuff with each other, that would be more of a tag team or gang bang situation, no? Even Ross seems to agree... https://youtu.be/K1dCQ5FoCkc

@David1955 Courage as to the consequences? Don't know what that means. Either way I'm not afraid of any thing you may consider a consequence of saying that the conservative atheists group is a big fat pile of racist pieces of shit. Anyone who supports a racist is, by extension, a racist, therefore, since Trump and most other Republicans are racists, the people who vote for them are as well. I wasn't trying to hide that fact. I assumed it was pretty clear what I meant. But if you need me to spell it out, there you go... Bring on the consequences.

The article doesn't mention racism and isn't about racism. Why did you mention racism?
ChestRockfield replies on Oct 31, 2021:
I was wondering if there was anything about racism in there. I got bored of it halfway through looking for the connection and gave up. Thank you for slogging through that entire pile of drivel to know and share that it wasn't in there.

One of the reasons I really liked living in Maine was the lack of religious influences on most aspects of daily life, and government. As far as I can tell, this is a bunch of xtian whackjobs who can't stand not being funded with tax dollars. SCOTUS better get this right.
ChestRockfield replies on Oct 30, 2021:
What are the chances that the court that allowed an abortion ban to stand in Texas is going to get this right?

ChestRockfield replies on Oct 29, 2021:
@holdenc98 I'll grant you, you are correct about it being too late. Too late for everything. Too late to solve the climate crisis. We live in a world that is run by greed. It would have been nice if humans had exploited the false notion that they had free will (and the belief that they are innately moral beings) and actually transcended petty human emotions like jealousy and greed and built a sustainable society. It is apparently so that we could have had a philosopher king that could have [would have tried to] guide us in that direction, but likely only as equally possible as the masses would have metaphorically killed him and replaced him with what we have now anyway. It doesn't matter if it's raw or original * (it's not) * though because... It's too late to solve our political divide. We live in a post-fact world. There is no way to convince someone who doesn't share common definitions (essentially, a common language) of the things you know. It would be as impossible as proving to someone that the sky is "blue" who defines "blue" as red. (This is another reason to conform to spelling and grammar rules. It doesn't make you special in any way to rebel, it just makes you an impediment to progress * regardless of how famous or successful you think the others are that have done it.) * Do you honestly think you're going to convince 80 million people that "an elite" intelligent person could solve our problems (let alone how that person would be chosen)? And of course democracy is a failure; people are stupid. Democracy was just the best of the ideas we could come up with that the stupid masses would go along with. I don't think that's in any way a profound thought though. I believe these things were inevitable, of course, and realize there is no "saving" something that was doomed from the start, but certainly not given the fact that you cannot even convince people of things that are readily apparent. I suppose all that's left to do is "join 'em" and run out the clock.

@Seriousreason What are you talking about?! The right is the constitutionally guaranteed right to vote. The privilege is riding on a plane or going on a cruise or whatever the fuck else a company wants to require proof of vaccination for. * That's * the difference. I would never agree to requiring proof of vaccination for voting. Are you really unable to parse these things?
