@JWDiaz No, a medical doctor, not a PhD. You specialize after becoming an MD or DO. Tax Cuts For Dummies - YouTube
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 16, 2018:
This woman is likely not saying what she believes. She's probably just an actress getting paid by Turning Point USA, an ultra right wing propaganda machine that targets college-age kids who are too naive to know what they're being told is all lies.
ChestRockfield replies on Jan 17, 2018:
@M121 Well, right off the bat, because of the way our tax system works, any blanket tax cut disproportionately benefits the rich. (And don't believe the lies about the tax cuts not being for the rich. Most of the income for people making so much money that it could theoretically cause them to pay more actually comes from sources that this won't hurt: corporate tax and investment income, both of which are taxed differently and now drastically lower.) So back to the tax cuts for everyone. Actually, people tell me sometimes my writing is not easy to understand. I found this video that sums all this up quite nicely. https://www.vox.com/videos/2017/11/15/16654480/how-tax-breaks-help-rich It's 8.5minutes long but well worth the time for anyone who actually cares what's going on and everyone who will be negatively affected by it.
Is belief a choice?
Janus819 comments on Jan 16, 2018:
I do not think it is a choice. When I first realized Christianity was BS I wanted to continue believing anyway. I had every motive to. I just couldn't.
ChestRockfield replies on Jan 17, 2018:
@witchymom No, neither of those things are true. I don't wake up every morning and decide I'm going to still not believe in a Christian conception of god that I believe to be self-contradictory. Truthfully, that thought almost never crosses my mind unless I'm reading something like this. Likewise, people like my brother's best friend's mother who believes she literally talks to Jesus and has verbal conversations with him is not choosing to believe. Just for fun, choose to believe kittens are disgusting and ugly for a day and then go to the pet store and play with some and see how you feel inside. When you still want to squeeze the shit out of them because they are unbearably adorable, you can come back and apologize for being wrong.

ChestRockfield replies on Jan 16, 2018:
@TheMiddleWay Fallacy #1 This whole time you've been setting up a **Straw Man**. You've taken my statement differentiating what people mean when they say they are agnostic and you've defined it in a way that makes it easier to defeat. You say that if anyone has any knowledge or supporting evidence, that eliminates their ability to be agnostic about whether or not god exists. But those are two different things. If I find a bloody collar in the road with my dog's tag on it, I have evidence to suggest that he got hit by a car. Depending on the amount of blood, what the weather conditions are, how resilient and old/young it is, if there were foot pints leading anywhere, etc. I can make educated guesses on whether or not my dog is still alive. So by your definitions, because I know some information about the circumstances that could shape my belief, I can't say both "I don't know if my dog is alive" and "I believe my dog is alive". The only way one is unable to make the claim with intellectual honesty that they don't know whether or not the dog is alive is if they have incontrovertible proof regarding that claim, nothing else. Fallacy #2 Your unnecessarily long explanation of hard and soft agnosticism was nothing but a **Red Herring** But if we look at your position on the Higgs. You say you are now "more in the belief camp". What does that mean? It means you have some evidence to suggest that it is true which caused you to limply say you believe, but you don't have proof, so you can't say you know. Your very counterargument, in essence, contains the language that you believe in the Higgs, but can't know for sure (yet). This directly contradicts your statement, "Thus I'm claiming that if you don't have facts, information, or a 'justified true belief' about gods, then you are agnostic and that any further claim that they do or do not exist is unjustified as it is not informed by knowledge." Furthermore, your statement is conflating the words believe and know. Beliefs are (or at least should be) based on evidence. Knowledge is based on proof (a true belief). Fallacy #3 You initially claimed that you could prove that unicorns don't exist through genetics. You then **Moved the Goalposts** and claimed that the unicorn had to be terrestrial. Then claimed that the unicorn had to have horse DNA. Let's get one thing clear, if a unicorn exists, it would be its own species with its own DNA, and it would have been a descendant of the ancestors of some of the animals we know of today, but to claim that you know which ones or what DNA it would have despite the fact that it could be based on some pretty significant genetic mutations or cross breedings is exceptionally arrogant and completely fallacious. You took the definition "A mythical ...

ChestRockfield replies on Jan 15, 2018:
@TheMiddleWay See, you're defining agnostic as "without any knowledge whatsoever" when it could be "without all of the knowledge necessary to". Making an educated guess is not knowing, thus, you can believe something, with evidence, that you do not know for certain to be true. In other words, you're claiming the knowledge one can't have to label himself agnostic is ANY evidence about god, while I'm claiming the knowledge one can't have is of god. When people say they're agnostic, they're not saying "I have no knowledge of any evidence for or against the existence of a god" they're saying "I don't/can't know if a god exists."

@JackPedigo I do not believe in "agree to disagree" for anything that's not a matter of preference. I've had several disagreements with extremely logical and intelligent people. Never has the discussion devolved from civility. We just discussed the matter until a resolution was reached in all but one case. (However, that case was a discussion about the implications of a theoretical device that could intercept all sensory input from your neural pathways and replace it with other sensory information designated by a third party, so I don't think that counts as a failure on our part.)

Picture a child that wants to play the video game you're playing, so you give him controller #2 and tell him "good job" while you continue on. There are only so many times the child can realize that the character on the screen was "momentarily" out of his control before he recognizes he wasn't controlling it at all.

You can call them emotional responses if you wish, but by that rationale, all things that anyone cares to talk about are essentially emotional responses. @hlfsousa To claim that your subconscious mind is part of you to the point of giving you credit for the decisions it makes would mean we choose our dreams and should be held accountable for what we say in our sleep as well. Whatever agency you feel, is an illusion played by your conscious mind. If not, you'd also feel agency for things which you did not even know you did, yet you don't. How much sense does that make? Also, what do you think this is all about? I believe understanding these "technicalities" will advance mankind. Once you recognize that you do not have free will, it's a little easier to be forgiving of those that didn't win as much in the genetic and environmental lotteries as you.

If you stuck your dick in a glory hole and got a blowjob from a dude, can you really be that surprised or upset? Additionally, we have laws on the books here to protect those we've deemed as a society 'unable to consent'. I mean, the girl was 25 for Pete's sake. Now, the only way I can think of to help combat some of these buyer's remorse situations would be to determine one's ability to consent by examination, not arbitrarily by age.
