Let's give religion a break just for a moment.
ChestRockfield comments on Jun 15, 2020:
I mean, I guess I like that the two people in my mom's generation that I still talk to are big into Italian food preparation on Christian holidays. They know I don't give a fuck about Jesus, but we like to visit and eat like crazy.
America's Wet Markets -- Bill Maher
ChestRockfield comments on Jun 15, 2020:
This, like the banning of trans fats, will likely be one of the things that the government would need to force on us rather than everyone choosing it individually. It's very hard to pick up meat that's way more expensive that looks and tastes identical. Especially when you really have no guarantee it also doesn't have some horrible things of its own or is any better in the long run. It's the same way most people won't stop shopping at Walmart, or buy conflict-free coffee and chocolate. Not many people have the fortitude, much less then money, to do all the things the way you SHOULD do them. Hell, we've know for how long how incredibly bad smoking is and people go right along and smoke.

Divorce can create poverty when the couple is older and soon to retire.
ChestRockfield comments on Jun 13, 2020:
I'm going to sound like an asshole here. I apologize in advance, as that is not my intention. Reading all of these stories terrifies me. I was afraid of so many of these things happening, that I took precautions, maybe (probably) to my own detriment. I looked at stories of people with children, of couples who divorced after having children, of people who had disabled children (and then kept having children??), of people who had a child die and then split as a result, etc. etc. and thought none were risks I ever wanted to take. The mere concept of the rare event of finding the person you love most in the entire world, who loves you most in the entire world, then creating a thing that you both love more than each other is the most counterintuitive thing I've ever heard of. It was because of this that I lost the love of my life. So here I am at 40, debt free, house, sports car & daily driver, student loans all free and clear, no wife, no kids, and a pretty decent income. Yet, I feel life is a pointless as it could possibly be. Every night I hope I die in my sleep, and every morning I'm depressed I woke up. I can't kill myself, for whatever reason(s), so I just have to try to make it through the day keeping my mind as distracted as I can so that I don't constantly think about the sweet release of death. And that life, as awful as it is/sounds (or doesn't sound depending on perspective) still doesn't make me think that if I had it to do over again I'd risk having children to keep her. I guess all that said, if you don't have someone to be with and share things with and love, it's likely nothing else will mean shit regardless of how much or little you have otherwise. If you can, you should be happy.

The public "TRUST IN SCIENCE" is on the UPSWING; finally and keep the momentum.
ChestRockfield comments on Aug 18, 2019:
It's too late... We have already bought and paid for more oil than we'll need to hit what climate scientists collectively agree is the point of no return. Even if we all magically wanted to buy electric cars tomorrow, the carbon footprint of building all of them and producing the electricity to run them would push us past it.

ChestRockfield comments on Aug 18, 2019:
The number one thing that's wrong with all religion is that it supplants inquiry with an unsupported conclusion.

Let's Respect Each Other's Beliefs
ChestRockfield comments on Aug 18, 2019:
'Respecting others' beliefs' as a general rule is very dangerous. Some beliefs do not deserve respect, and should be shunned at every opportunity. Do you really respect someone's belief that black people are property, Jewish people should be gassed, or that women should not have any autonomy? I sure hope not.

I do not like The Beatles. I think they are overrated, and I tend to dislike things that gain more favor than they deserve.

Technically, you are correct. The existence of a man named Jesus in no way validates the claims of divinity.

There was a really hot girl I was sleeping with that thought the lyrics to 'Black' by Pearl Jam were, "*Her legs* spread out before me As her body once did." That song would get her super turned on and she would fuck me sideways anytime she heard it. Needless to say, when I found out it was "*Were laid*" I never said a word.
WWYD?
ChestRockfield comments on Feb 25, 2018:
Nope. Watching this particular pile of shit suffer would be one of the greatest pleasures of my life. I often wonder how bad someone could have been hurt if they say they'd help or forgive. I have forgiven a lot of pretty terrible things (I got robbed by a friend who was using heroin, and even without restitution, I was able to forgive him) but there are a couple people that have wronged me so hard, I could stand by and watch the most horrible things you could imagine happen to them and drink a glass of lemonade.
Weird?
ChestRockfield comments on Feb 20, 2018:
I mean if you include being picky, then there is something "wrong" with all of us that are in our 30s while never married [and no kids]. I would be married this very second if I were willing to budge on the having kids thing, so when a girl sees me, she's right to think, "What's the catch? Why didn't anyone else scoop up this gorgeous, hilarious man who cooks like a chef and fucks like a rockstar?" :-P

An elderly man was talking with a friend on his porch after returning from a vacation. "My wife and I went to this amazing restaurant that was just off the resort. When you head down, you simply must go there." Friend: "Really? We'll have to try it. What was the name of it?" Elderly man: "Oh, let's see, ... what WAS the name... I just can't quite think of it.....hmmmm.......................uhh, okay, it's a flower.....real popular..... long stem.....thorns....?" Friend: "Rose?" Elderly man: "Yes! That's it! Rose! Hey Rose, what was the name of that restaurant we went to?"

Why do women have to basically spell it out for men in what they want? Why are they so clueless?
ChestRockfield comments on Feb 14, 2018:
The more this 'me too' movement grows, the more women will need to explicitly state what they want, just sayin'. And don't worry about bad birthdays. We all have them and they only get more frequent as time goes on. Try to remember it's just another day so you can just be your normal level of disappointed with the world, that's what I do. :-P

Would you consider having sex with a bearded man?
ChestRockfield comments on Feb 10, 2018:
I cannot grow a long beard. After a couple weeks, it starts to drive me nuts in the neck region and I have to trim it back down. I rock a really short beard all the time now. I only shaved it a few years on Halloween for my costume, but because it is so short, it's back to "just trimmed" length in a couple days. If I ever have another girl and I'm still on this site, I'll post her response.

I wonder where your conscientiousness goes when your are under anesthesia?
ChestRockfield comments on Feb 7, 2018:
At first, I thought this was a very different question that I had an answer for. When I had my wisdom teeth removed, I apparently said some shit to the super hot dental assistant. My family wouldn't tell me what I said, and just said with bright red faces, "Trust me, you don't want to know." I'm assuming my conscientiousness was straight missing while I was high.

Is free will real or just an illusion?
ChestRockfield comments on Feb 5, 2018:
I guess that person who commented on my poll was right: it is a weekly question. No, there is no such thing as free will. This community will not be able to help you though, as they are very evenly split on whether or not it exists. Your best bet is to do some reading on the subject, and your mind will be made up for you. I will say that the fact that a smaller percentage of people on this site (generally more logical thinkers) than the general public believe in free will says something, so it may be worth a look for you.

What's a good romantic gift someone could give you?
ChestRockfield comments on Feb 3, 2018:
One time Stu and I got really drunk, and because she got really bad hangovers and I never get hungover at all, I left her place before she woke up and drove around her whole city getting all of the various food and drink items that she likes as hangover cures so they'd all be at her fingertips when she woke up. Don't know if that's romantic, or just a nice thing to do. For her birthday in Jamaica, I went outside before she woke up and got the kittens (one of which I'm holding in my profile pic) because we always talked about how waking up to kittens walking around on you is the best way to wake up. I always tried to surprise her by going way out of my way or sacrificing sleep and such just to get to see her even if it was only for a really short period of time. One Valentine's Day when it was highly unlikely that our work schedules were going to allow us to see each other, I showed up on her door with several pounds of king crab legs just so we could have a quick (amazing) dinner together.

ChestRockfield comments on Feb 1, 2018:
It is quite possible that religious moderates are not only part of the problem, but the biggest part of the problem. Their large base gives an air of legitimacy to the belief system and provides an environment in which religious extremism can survive and thrive. Compare the "crazy" beliefs of the marginalized with those of the religious. How different are they, really? A man wearing a tinfoil hat pleading for people to heed his warning about alien abductions and the anal probes that went along with them is not taken seriously by anyone, *except maybe those that are also wearing similar hats*. So how is it that we're legislating morality based on stories that contain taking snakes and donkeys and people that rise from the dead? It's because there's a huge portion of the population that doesn't think these are ridiculous things to believe. Without religious moderates religious extremist groups would have no where to recruit members or obtain funding. They would, in effect, be reduced to another crazy, yet powerless person we ignore in the course of our everyday lives, albeit they'd have slightly more asinine headwear.

Want to know what percentage of the community believes in free will?
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 29, 2018:
In light of the results coming out evenly spilt, it begs the question... Considering we are a community of individuals that are likely more logical, contemplative, and discerning than other groups (like those that contain believers), and considering that at one time all of us believed in free will, and considering that now HALF of the respondents have answered that they know free will is an illusion, does it give those that think we do any pause? Could it really be that such a large percentage of people from a group that's likely in the higher percentiles for logic, reason, and intelligence ALL are So deluded that they gave up a belief that is so seemingly true? If it were about something that we all started from different points and maybe a lot of us never gave it any thought, that would be one thing, but we all started with a belief in free will, and we all came to the same conclusion. For those that still believe in free will, it could have been merely a result of not investigating to maintain belief. But the half that did abandon a belief in free will definitely did investigate. Something to think about... @Stevil @irascible @GipsyOfNewSpain @Heathen2 @Funandfondles @Dwight @Ac08 @jayneonacobb @Lincoln16 @Fanburger

What are your opinions on prostitution?
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 28, 2018:
Wow, good topic. There are plenty of good reasons to be against the legalization of prostitution. 1. I believe there is a very clear disparity in the "control of sex" in our culture. It permeates every facet of our lives from our personal relationships to our movies and televisions shows. The collective acknowledgment that men should be paying women for sex (with cash or other means even though it pretty much seems that way now) will just further propagate that detrimental belief. 2. A vast majority of sex workers aren't sex workers because that's what they wanted to do. They get forced into it as a last resort or the slightly more lucrative option of shitty jobs they can get/keep due to educational level, training, scheduling conflicts because of child care, etc. 3. I don't see it as an empowerment thing women should get behind, or something much different than homeless people claiming autonomy over their bodies for the right to sell kidneys and parts of their livers to millionaire highest-bidders who need them. And no, I don't see this as a slippery slope argument. Both can be done for free, at will, legally, and both could be done for high dollar amounts. Sure, one can only be done a limited number of times, but that's why the payout would be drastically higher. On the other hand, I see absolutely no functional difference between prostitution and pornography. Maybe I'm just selfish, but I like that porn exists. I've watched with exes and alone, and it is a valuable tool.
How much do brand names matter?

ALDI's Clancy's Rippled Potato Chips in the yellow and blue bag are the best potato chips in the entire world and have destroyed every competitor I've ever seen them go up against in a blind taste test. *I do A LOT of blind taste tests*. I think it's because I seem to be surrounded by a lot of brand whores that need to have this shit proved to them. My mom even claims that even after her national brand lost when she couldn't see them, that when she can see which is which she likes her name brand better. How fucked is that?
How much do brand names matter?
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 28, 2018:
DIE HARD ALDI FAN right here. But that doesn't mean I don't objectively evaluate the products I buy. There are several products that ALDI has copied that do not stack up to the national brand in blind taste tests, so I still buy the national brand. It's purely based on a quality/cost ratio though. Some products are almost as good as national but half the price, so it's worth the loss of quality. I buy NOTHING simply for the name though (including clothes).
I have a friend.
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 28, 2018:
Yeah, that's not weaponizing sex in my opinion, and I'm a pretty big opponent of sex weapons. I would prefer to only "do sex" with someone who meets my minimum requirements for a relationship. That is not to say that if Britney Spears came up to me and said she, just once, "wanted my body now" that I wouldn't be in the sack with her before she could say *Hold It Against Me*. Exceptions can be made to almost every rule... you just have to meet the narrow parameters of the exception.
It is my humble opinion that the vast majority of us men are heavily influenced by PMS.
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 28, 2018:
I'm not prideful at all. Most of what I have that people would be proud of I know I didn't earn in any real way. Money obviously motivates me only insofar as it gets me the things that I actually value, like a week or two relaxing in the sun sipping ice cold drinks and having a house and some stuff to do the rest of the (sadder) weeks of the year. And sex is not a motivator. I could probably get laid if that's all I was after, but now that I've had someone I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, that's all I want anymore.
What are your thoughts on the etiquette of paying for dates?
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 28, 2018:
That article wasn't helpful, at all. While they said less than 25% of respondents didn't say the man should pay, they didn't say the gender composition of that group. All I know is that if the check comes on the first date and the dude suggests they split it, it's highly unlikely that there will be a check to worry about on a second date.

ChestRockfield comments on Jan 27, 2018:
No one "gets" their morality from religion either. As soon as you ask them why they don't stone gay people or their disobedient children to death, it should become clear to them that their own internal moral compass is what directs them and not their book.

Do most older men prefer a younger model?
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 27, 2018:
You can't take what rich men do and apply it to all males. I mean, if you put an insanely gorgeous young woman in front of any straight man, it's gonna set off some alarms. But that shouldn't be news to you. Can you honestly look at a shirtless Ryan Gosling and be like, "Nah, he looks too ripped and his eyes are too blue and dreamy; he would not be allowed in my bed." You see old, fat, disgusting piles of garbage like Donald Trump banging hot young women and you think that's the norm for guys. It's not, it more seems like the norm for rich people. And I imagine there's some older rich women that do very similar things. And yes, in the end he will have no relationship with substance, but then again, it's been 71 years and he hasn't had one yet and it doesn't seem to bother him.

He said from his phone... I don't know, this kinda seems like a dilemma only well-off individuals would have. I mean, could you imagine saying this to a homeless person living in Cleveland in the middle of winter?
Scientist announces a laser so powerful it can tear empty space
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 27, 2018:
Get used to it being other countries that do cool shit. The US is too busy debating whether or not we should have Jesus in schools instead of pushing science and math.
Where do you spend your vacation?
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 27, 2018:
If I have a lady friend, I like to spend my vacation in Jamaica at an all-inclusive. If not, I generally chill at home, and get stuff done I've put off while working 10s. Edit: Reading these comments makes me feel lucky I get 4 weeks of vacation a year. Is that that uncommon?
Is there a UNIVERSAL morality?
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 26, 2018:
No, there's no universal morality. Also, that value of life argument will only hold true for so long. Once the decision changes from should we let this person live or die' to 'should we let this person live or that person live' we'll be no different than any other animal.
Does anyone really hook up on this site?
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 26, 2018:
'Hook up' has shit connotation. To me it implies zero emotional or intellectual connection. That's not what I'm looking for, so I have no idea of this site would accommodate. I did, however, get a response from the lady I emailed. I'm charming as fuck and kinda funny when I wanna be, though, so...
Do you believe American medicine was designed to help humans heal or are we making/keeping people ...
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 25, 2018:
A chemical engineer I know who got a job at a pharmaceutical company was told during his orientation, "If you ever come to a fork in the road where you can make a cure or a treatment, you make the treatment." I have no reason to believe he was lying.
So, leaving religion out of it...do you believe in anything "supernatural"?
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 25, 2018:
Nope.
So IMPOTUS won't come to Britain till we stop protest. Do one you orange tt.
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 25, 2018:
I wish he would stay out of the US as long as there's a protest here. You guys are lucky.
What is your opinion on capital punishment?
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 25, 2018:
Pro capital punishment is an indefensible position to hold. It's shocking to me that a group of people who seem to pride themselves on evidenced based beliefs and logical thought would have a split this close on this topic. How depressing.

How many of you are bothered by second hand smoke?
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 24, 2018:
It's awful. As much as people would label me a "freedom hater,", I wish they'd just ban all forms of tobacco already. Also, e-cigarette vapor fucks my lungs up something awful. My brother used it in my house and I developed a nasty cough that lasted a couple weeks.
Are you a fan of live theater?
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 24, 2018:
Book of Mormon was amazing. Beauty and the Beast was fantastic as well.
Anyone of us on here going to the Superbowl?
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 24, 2018:

Oklahoma Lawmaker: Rape and Incest are the ‘Will of God’
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 24, 2018:
If he ever gets anally raped, (and I hope he does) I hope the police dismiss the seriousness of it and tell him it was god's will.
If you already know, that you have the best woman in the world, then what are you waiting for ?
ChestRockfield comments on Jan 24, 2018:
I had her. I knew what I wanted, but she wanted kids.
