I am reading about milkweed and noticed there are different kinds.
Leafhead comments on May 25, 2018:
It is always best to stick with Asclepias native to your region. Avoid so-called Tropical or Annual Milkweed if possible. Monarchs will seek the happiest, healthiest plants. Non natives may be passed up for natives simply because they are out of their zone. Plants that are shaded (except Asclepias exaltata, or "Poke Milkweed") or otherwise stressed will also be snubbed. Best rule of thumb: stay native. And stay away from big box stores like Home Depot, as they may or may not use pesticides.

I'm in the MW but I plant for hummingbirds, butterflies and all other pollinators and bugs. I grow mostly native stuff, with a few cultivars and naturalized plants just to "class the place up". I live in a condo and have to plant some corporate looking crap, but I try to stay with conifers and Viburnum hedges to at least feed and shelter birds in winter. I have a native cherry out front that supports Swallowtails and Red Spotted Purples

My cousin was stationed in Afghanistan during the 1990s. To get to his post, he was given a camel, and instructions to brick him. Of course, my cousin had no idea what that meant. His camel died sion after, and he was stranded in the desert. Parched and near death, he was rescued by passing Bedouin and rehydrated. When asked what happened, he explained his camel died shortly after being watered. To which the Elder queried "Did you brick him?" My cousin then replied "What does that mean?" The Elder then explained that as the camel goes to drink the water, you slam his testicles between two bricks. Surprised, the camel sucks in extra water and doesn't die of thirst. "Doesn't that hurt?" queried the soldier. "Only if your thumb gets in the way!" quipped the Elder

All right! Been working on restoring a wetlands near my bros house by the lake. There is a gorgeous rain garden and a wetlands full of invasives. My brother and I are removing the crap and reintroducing natives with feeding properties, with the "local gentry" in mind (deer, rabbits, birds, etc). Lots of introduced berries, lots of pollinator/butterfly friendly undergrowth, like nettles and Anise Hyssop, Golden Alexander, Turtle Head and Pussy Willow are doing well. Lots of rain and lots of progress!

Here's a tip for controlling Garlic Mustard without the spray. Mow before they bloom, and replace with Wild Ginger. Wild Ginger is allelopathy to Garlic Mustard. If hardwoods like Buckthorn are ailing you, simply cut to ground level and paint with industrial strength Roundup. Painting only affects the unwanted shrub or tree painted. Try to plan for a dry stretch in the weather, as Roundup takes a day or so to absorb into the vascular system.

Leafhead comments on Apr 30, 2018:
I grow Golden Alexander here in the Midwest for Black Swallowtails. Not only do they taste bad to deer and rabbits, (unlike fennel and dill) but the toxin makes the caterpillars taste bad to birds as well. Another plus is that it's native and perrenial Also, I grow Antennaria, or Pussytoes, for American Lady Butterflies. Nettles for Red Admirals, and Swamp Milkweed for Monarchs.. Known to have better manners in a garden than Common Milkweed and well received by Monarch larvae.

Leafhead comments on Apr 28, 2018:
Good for you! Aphids will be a nuisance, but a healthy plant will take them in stride. Stressed plants, like those grown in shade or too much/little water, are prone to more severe infestations. Usually, on healthy plants, the parasites and predators keep the critters under control. I'm glad to hear you're doing your part to save the Monarch.

Leafhead comments on Apr 17, 2018:
I grow orchids indoors year round. With a little special treatment, orchids can withstand a variety of light and humidity levels. Most epiphytic varieties should be flushed and drained with each watering, rather than spot watered like other houseplants in soil. Different orchids have different light and watering needs. Fertilizing rule of thumb is WEEKLY, WEAKLY. Phaelanopsis is easier to care for than most others and is good for beginners.

My Asclepias tuberosa starts for Season 2018!
Leafhead comments on Apr 13, 2018:
Milkweed season will be upon most of us soon, if it ever warms up. That means soon after it will be time for Monarch caterpillars. I can give step by step directions for the care and release of Monarch caterpillars, chrysalis and butterflies. This method will work with other species as well, such as Longwings and many Swallowtails. People in Texas and north should be seeing migrating butterflies. Now is the time to plant Milkweed in your gardens if you don't already have it. Collecting and raising caterpillars is easy, but can get intense toward the end. It is best to start with small numbers at first. You can also grow and give away Milkweed. It's fun and easy to grow. Anyone out there interested in learning about Monarch restoration?

I am reading about milkweed and noticed there are different kinds.
Leafhead comments on Apr 13, 2018:
There are many types of Milkweed and related genera throughout the world. It is important to note that Monarchs fare best and respond best to native Milkweed. You would be wise to Google species native to your area and stick with those. Caveat: Avoid so called Tropical Milkweed (Asclepias curassavica) if possible. It is a possible harbor for OE, a deadly parasite that causes gross deformity in adult Monarchs and Queens. If you must use it, wash it extra good with 10% bleach and rinse well. Avoid other Milkweeds that are not native in your region in general. Better safe than sorry.

I used to collect weeds in South Florida, such as Desmodium Bugger ticks to Sarcostemma Whitevine. I would also collect "Gator Grass" for those "pesky" Brazilian Skippers. I could then keep my Cannas (close relatives) free of larvae. Here in the Midwest, people are more eco-friendly and you can usually get "drug free" plants at many nurseries and/or farmers markets.
