A woman went into a store and asked for tampax. The hard of hearing storekeeper thought she said tacks and said do you want the type that have to be hammered in or you can push in with your thumb. Poor lady looked horrified.
Nowadays they look horrified that my mother used to wash the strips of torn up old towel that she had for sanitary towels. They were then put to dry on top of the copper tank in the bathroom where all could see them. There was no embarassment or shame about it, simply a fact of life.
I was horrified when I learnt that my 6 year old daughter living in a house with her mother & grandmother didn't know about menstruation & the benefit of sanitary towels.
A woman here in Australia wrote a book about all the slang expressions used in Australia meaning to menstruate. I think that it was called something like "Roses on the dustbin lid".
The web reports of 5000. expressions collected in 2015 some reported here: [goodhousekeeping.com]
Yup my other used to make her own handstitched and cotton wool stuffed, sanitary towel too, with loops to fix to a sanitary belt.
She thought store bought ones were unsanitary, and would rather restuff and wash her own over and over again.
She was disgusted to find we had been taught about menstruation in Biology classes at school, but then again she had also threatened to take me out of one of my schools, because they taught us human beings were animals.
@LenHazell53 "they taught us human beings were animals." - what did she think you should have been taught?
You were raise a JW weren't you Len? Do they command their members to have no contact with non believers thus breaking families up?
@LenHazell53 "handstitched and cotton wool stuffed" sounds very mistaken OCD. I didn't think wool very absorbant. Was the wool pocket open weave?
@FrayedBear No I was raised Methodist by a Salvationist mother (later converted to Charismatic) and Baptist father.
I converted to Mormonism for a few years when I married my first wife, then turned atheist
Cotton wool is not wool, it is raw unprocessed cotton and is highly absorbent.
My Mother thought because "Man is made in the image of God" and had dominion over animals that Humans are NOT animal because they have souls.
If I remember correctly my head teacher told her that if she wanted to she could believe I was a vegetable, because that was the only other choice.
And Yes JW's do practice shunning and wreck families, they are bunch of utter fuckwits
@LenHazell53 Thanks FYI.
Handstiched in wool unless an open weave pouch would tend to prevent the cotton wool absorbing. Furthermore packets of cotton wool have never been particularly cheap . . . your must have been doing something wonderful with the household budget or you had extra meals of tripe & bread & dripping? . . . Whoops just remembered Len that you're younger than me & grew up in a more affluent time than the 50's.
"she could believe I was a vegetable"
I think my daughter's ⅛ aboriginal husband is JW. It explains why I have no relationship now with my daughter & grandchild.
@LenHazell53 Mormonism another bunch of deluded people - whoops my faulty memory on your biography.
