Barnie2years comments on Feb 11, 2019:
I have met many family members I didn’t even know I had, reconnected to others I haven’t seen since we were kids. But some have veered in very radically different directions politically and most are theists. So after a time of my posting Liberal/Atheist/anti-Trump/anti-religion posts or their posting crazy Right Wing/god,god,god/miracle,miracle,miracle stuff, one or the other of us unfollowed the other. I seldom unfriend them, since they are welcome to tag me with funny or interesting pet memes, but we have no interest in sharing our life and thoughts. But in you case, if she could not respect the boundaries you set, dumping was probably your only option.
I have made mistakes.
Barnie2years comments on Feb 11, 2019:
That is one of my issues with holding people responsible for missteps they took in their younger days. Be it groping, pot smoking, black face, cross dressing or other non felonies. Assuming you have matured and become a respectable person, you should be able to apologize and be judged on the character of your present and recent past. Look, Republicans totally ignored Trump’s very recent pussy grabbing, peeping on teenagers and philandering. Meanwhile, the Democrats are sidelining good politicians for things they did in their 20’s and have led as far as we know, exemplary lives since. Al Franken is a perfect example. He did weird, immature things back when he was a comedian. As he got older he settled down to become a champion of women, progressive politics and a leader of the party. Then we throw him aside, open the door for his seat in Congress to be taken by a conservative who will work against our Party, for something that he apologized for and it was decades ago. Actual criminals get pardons and are able to rehabilitate, why do we hold good people to an even higher standard? Sorry If I went a bit off the theme of the post.

He is folding, knowingly or less likely, unknowingly, right into Putin’s agenda. By dropping out of the Iran deal, he has taken any incentive they had to not develop nukes away. By dropping out of the IMF he has put not only the US, but much more so Europe at great risk. Russia now has no need to even try and hide their nuclear missle program. They have little incentive to stop incursions into neighboring countries nor their expansion and alliances with the worst countries in the Middle East. Iran and Syria will be more than happy to align with Russia while we are losing allies other than Israel thanks to Cheeto’s ham handed foreign policy. Why do men save badly worn-out clothes?
Barnie2years comments on Feb 2, 2019:
I will wear stuff until it falls apart because I like them and much of the new clothes don’t feel or fit as nice. I have an old tattered flannel shirt, was my dad’s and passed on to me. The collar is close to falling off, so I only wear it around the house (most of the time) or to walk the dog. But it is warm, has two nice pockets, and fits comfortable. If the collar goes, I might just try to customize it into a neru collar with no wings! ? I generally take pretty good care of my clothing. Much of what is in my closet is ten to twenty years old and look fine; colors not faded, no holes, and still fit.
Why So Many Smart People Aren’t Happy - The Atlantic - Pocket
Barnie2years comments on Feb 1, 2019:
Smart is in the eye of the beholder. It is generally self defined, leaving a lot up to the individual. Look, Trump has self described as a Stabile Genius when most of the world considers him nuts. And IQ measures intelligence, not nessisarily smart. There is a difference. I had a friend who was very intelligent, he could answer questions on history and world governments without hesitation. But the man couldn’t fry an egg. My philosophy has always been that everyone is stupid, just in different ways. Perhaps the same could be said of smart?

Coincidence that most atheists oppose Trump?
Barnie2years comments on Jan 31, 2019:
Reading through the commentary on this post shows that while most on this site are progressives there are a group of what can best be described as Anarchistes, though they I believe prefer the term Libertarian. They tend to think that mankind can exist with no rules, no central government, no leaders. They would do very well in countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan, where the central government is weak, the country is run by warring clans run by warlords and fringe groups. There is little infrastructure, spotty education and constant battles to expand dominance. No thanks! I may not be happy with the Republican leadership in place now, but at least I know there is a possibility if not a probability that they will be replaced in the years ahead by forward looking representatives rather than those who want to go backwards to a fantasy time that never really existed or can never be replicated.
Coincidence that most atheists oppose Trump?
Barnie2years comments on Jan 31, 2019:
Because most Atheist are thoughtful and reasoned. They strive to research and understand issues before making statements. We may not all agree on many things, but we can usually provide references to support our positions on whatever issue we may be arguing. Trump is just a big mouth who invents things, lies continuously about most everything, even the most inconsequential and trivial things (like how many attended his inauguration just for an example), offers no references to back up anything he says, because there is none. It's why the Evangelicals love him so much, their entire life is built around believing they have the truth and everyone who doesn't believe what they do is wrong, without anything to back their belief other than their antiquated book of legends. They are perfect for Trump. we are not.

Too bad (many) humans have such a hard time using such simple logic.
Barnie2years comments on Jan 10, 2019:
That would be wonderful if humans, like trees, followed the simple rules of nature. But humans are self determined. They choose to be nice, they choose to be mean, they choose to subjugate other humans, they choose to kill for no reason. No tree has ever said “I don’t like this house next to me, I think I will drop my biggest branch on its roof!” A human will say “I’m tired of raking leaves every fall, I will cut down that perfectly healthy tree!” The difference between accepting nature and free will.

Dealing with grief
Barnie2years comments on Dec 30, 2018:
Everyone deals with grief in their own way, regardless of what you believe in or don't believe. I know people who on the loss of a family member, are inconsolable and never fully recover, and yet spout the "better place, will see them in heaven, they are with other family members" mantra, while obviously not fully believing it. I don't believe I will ever see my dad, grandparents, first born child or any one else that dies again. I can tell you, my way of dealing with grief is the remember the good things that person accomplished in life, the happy times we may have had, the less than wonderful times as well. In the case of my infant son, that good time was only less than a year, but he had cancer, so his last 6 months of suffering made his death seem like a release from that. I find that rather than mourn their death, I prefer to celebrate their life and keep their memories alive without condemning myself to misery. Life is precious and short and should be lived while you are alive. Long term grief is not honoring those who pass, but killing your own life instead. Just how I handle it. As I said at the beginning, everyone deals with death on their own way.

Is it possible to fall in love with someone with opposing political views?
Barnie2years comments on Dec 30, 2018:
It's possible to fall in love with anyone. Can it be sustained if there is stark differences in religious, political, cultura, agel or language differences? I have seen relationships work with these differences, but it takes a lot of give and take, understanding and acceptance to overlook these chasms. In other words, both people have to be equally in love with each other and able to find commonalities in other areas as well as joy in each other's company. I would say that your starting the relationship with a handicap and that few can survive, but it's not impossible. One need look no further than Kellyanne Conway, Trump's most loyal supporter and her husband, who lambasts Trump on social media on a regular basis.

I worked in public transit as a driver for 42 years. Rarely took a day off sick. If I felt something coming on (stuffy nose, sore throat) this is what took care of it. It will not lessen the symptoms, there are plenty of OTC remedies for that. But I never had the flu/cold for more than a few days. For sore throat, take Zink Lozengers. Not the candy coated variety found in drug stores. Thy GNC or other vitamine shops. For the rest: 8 to 10 grams of vitamine C a day. I used to take half in the morning, half in the evening. As symptoms ease, tapper off, but continue taking until you’re pretty much back to 100%. I made the mistake of stopping to quick a few times and had to start over. That’s it, unless you have allergies or issues with vitamine C. But this has worked for a lot of friends that tried it as well.

Winter wonderland! I love the snow covered landscapes! Even more since I don’t have to go out driving it! Always makes it interesting for smaller dogs ? If it’s crusty, the little ones can run on the top, which helps until it starts to soften. Hopefully the next one doesn’t hit you so hard.

Seldom eat 1, 3,4,5,8, never 9. 10 is the only kind I ea?????. 6 and 7 in moderation. Something is going to kill me, at least I will have a good meal before I go, ?
I DO celebrate Christmas, but as a celebration of light and family warmth and feeling in Winter.
Barnie2years comments on Dec 10, 2018:
Over the years I have had some VERY bad Christmas seasons. I also find the greed and obsession of spending money people can’t afford on things people don’t really need disturbing. My immediate family (mom, my sister and her husband) gets together every year for Christmas for a week or so. We visit remaining family in the area, an ever smaller number. My son and his family live nearby as well (two grandsons), so we generally do the traditional gift exchange with them. The past few years, instead of gifts for the adults, who need nothing, I donate money to various charities that I feel they would value. Buy the grandsons some little gifts but mostly put money into education funds for both of them all year, something that will be of far more value than any toy they will break or discard in a week or two. I don’t decorate, leaving that job to my sister and her husband, who seem to enjoy the activity, once they get here. All I have to do is take it down and store it for next year after they leave!
This is how a church should be. Your thoughts?

When I was going through a rough patch in a relationship I felt I needed some kind of guidance or uplift. I went to the local Unitarian Universalist church a couple of Sundays. It didn’t help. Still felt shitty, didn’t get any insight and it’s still involves a magical entity in the Universe somewhere. Went to see a shrink, it was much more productive! ?
Good morning everyone! Anyone else wake up to this nonsense?

Federal court upholds New Jersey gun-control law limiting high capacity magazines
Barnie2years comments on Dec 6, 2018:
It’s of little use when the states all around you have them available. Unlike guns which at least have some regulations everywhere, magazines require no identification, background checks or registration. It’s good they passed the laws, but not going to stop those who really want them.
Just a thought

How many of you attend services, but are agnostic?
Barnie2years comments on Dec 5, 2018:
I used to go with mom when visiting my parents in Florida. But at some point I found it too hard not to laugh out loud at the rituals and sermons. The last time I was in that church was for my father’s funeral three years ago. I was the primary speaker, it was just a small gathering of friends of theirs, and my eulogy had no mention of god. Though we rarely talked religion (even less politics), the conversations we did have led me to believe that Dad was more Agnostic than a believer. Much of his infrequent going to church was more to make Mom happy than to support his beliefs. We had two other memorial services in various locations they had lived, none of them held in a church setting. The only other church visits in recent years have been for the baptism of my grandsons and in support of my son and his family who are believers. What I find every time I do attend a service is the complete ridiculousness of what they are promoting. The total unbelievability of the book they promote as world history. The hypocrisy of what they preach and how they actually function! So the best thing for me is to just stay away from the temptation to get into arguments with people I love.

Left over fries can be saved! Two ways that proven successful for me: broil them in the toaster oven on a oiled cookie sheet; or re-fry them in oil or an air fryer. Never, ever reheat them in the microwave! ?

Very interesting read! Her conclusion that it is not going to be an easy fix, and the obvious backslide of the Trump election makes it seem even harder to obtain parity.
Have you ever done anything that would be considered sexual harassment?
Barnie2years comments on Dec 3, 2018:
I would never want to run for public office or be a celebrity. There are things that at the time were considered pranks or fooling around that are now coming back to haunt people, which I was just as guilty of. Can’t change the past in anyway. We can only try to be better in the now and future.
