In spite of Attorney General Bill Barr's attempted whitewash of the Mueller Report, we know that Trump obstructed justice at least ten times during the investigation. What was Trump hiding? We also know that Trump's good buddy Rodger Stone lied for him under oath. Hence the conviction for perjury and subsequent pardon to keep his mouth shut. Mueller also concluded that his investigation could NOT rule out collusion between the Trump Campaign and the Russians. The Mueller investigation achieved dozens of serious felony convictions of both Trump Campaign and Russian operatives. And what did Durham achieve? One guilty plea on a low-level infraction (exaggerating on a FISA warrant). These FACTS speak for themselves: the Trump-Russia probe was entirely justified, and the Durham probe was a farce designed to obfuscate the truth.

Indefinitely, if the CO2 reacts with calcium to form CaCO3 (calcium carbonate, aka limestone), or with magnesium, to form MgCO3 (magnesium carbonate, aka magnesite), or both calcium and magnesium, to form CaMg(CO3)2, aka dolomite. The question is, where underground can we find hydrothermal waters containing these elements in the quantities necessary to even make a dent in the greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere, not to mention what we continue to emit on a vast scale every goddamn day? If this were really a viable option, we would already be doing it at scale.

@annewimsey500 Well, we do have the biggest economy in the world; bigger than all the EU countries combined. And we did get there by burning more fossil fuels than anyone else (roughly.25% of all that was burned in the 20th century, and our population was only 5% of the world population). So we are more responsible for global warming and its consequences than any other nation. Maybe it's not a bad thing that we give back a little by lending a little stability to the world order. (We would be more effective at it if we didn't engage in blatantly stupid destabilizing actions like invading Iraq the second time, or ousting democratically-elected governments in Central and South America and Iran in order to install puppet regimes friendly to US fruit and fossil fuel corporations).

Flyingsaucesir replies on Feb 10, 2024:
@1patriot Yes, methane from livestock dung is renewable. I never said it wasn't. And harvesting methane from dung is a good idea. Better to burn it, turn it into CO2; then it has a lower GWP (global warming potential). HOWEVER, the vast majority of methane is a product of mining. It comes out of the ground. It is a fossil fuel. Does it provide more BTUs relative to the CO2 produced when it burns than, say, coal or oil? Yes. But bringing that carbon up out of the ground upsets the balance in the carbon cycle. That carbon accumulated in the ground over hundreds of millions of years. You cannot return all of it, or even half of it, to the atmosphere in only a few hundred years without triggering catastrophic global warming. Such a thing is not unprecedented. The lead-up to the Permian extinction, when 95% of all species then alive on the planet went extinct, was characterized by a massive and relatively quick buildup of CO2 in the atmosphere. Some of this was from an extraordinary period of volcanic activity. Some was from the massive coal beds that were burned by the volcanic activity. A double whammy only outdone by our own mining, extraction, and burning of coal, oil, and natural gas.

Second, both of those meme statements are wildly off the mark. CO2 in the quantities we are emitting IS a pollutant. The extinction rate is WAY higher than ever in human history. I addressed these issues in my comments. If you can't handle feedback relating to your posts, maybe you shouldn't be posting. Don't worry, we won't miss you πŸ˜‚

@1patriot In 1822, Jean-Babtist Joseph Fourier calculated that Earth's atmosphere would be much colder than it is if the incoming radiation from the sun were the only warming effect. His idea that the Earth’s atmosphere acts like an insulator was the first formulation of what we now call the "greenhouse effect." Fourier, however, did not use that term. In 1856, Eunice Newton Foote, an amateur scientist and prominent suffragette, for the first time tested the heat-trapping abilities of different gases. In 1859, John Tyndall wrote, "...the atmosphere admits of the entrance of the solar heat; but checks its exit, and the result is a tendency to accumulate heat at the surface of the planet.” In 1896, Svante Arhenius was the first to use basic principles of physical chemistry to calculate estimates of the extent to which increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide will increase Earth's surface temperature through theΒ greenhouse effect. These calculations led him to conclude that human-caused carbon dioxideΒ emissions, from fossil-fuel burning and other combustion processes, are large enough to cause global warming. Around 1899, Nils Gustaf Ekholm wrote, "The atmosphere plays a very important part of a double character as to the temperature at the earth’s surface, of which the one was first pointed out by Fourier, the other by Tyndall. Firstly, the atmosphere may act like the glass of a green-house, letting through the light rays of the sun relatively easily, and absorbing a great part of the dark rays emitted from the ground, and it thereby may raise the mean temperature of the earth’s surface. Secondly, the atmosphere acts as a heat store placed between the relatively warm ground and the cold space, and thereby lessens in a high degree the annual, diurnal, and local variations of the temperature.” In 1958, while working underΒ the direction of Roger Revelle at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Charles Keeling began monitoring atmospheric carbon dioxide levels from a station on Mauna Loa, in Hawaii. Keeling's data, when plotted on a graph, showed not only the annual fluctuation of carbon dioxide due to seasonal changes in photosynthesis, but also continuous year-to-year increases in overall CO2 concentration that roughly matched the human emissions from burning fossil fuels. This graph, which came to be known as the "Keeling curve," shows that atmospheric CO2 is not only increasing, but that the increase has been accelerating. While Keeling collected his data, other scientists around the world were measuring atmospheric and ocean temperatures. Eventually it became clear that temperatures are rising at a rate consistent with an increased greenhouse effect due to the burning of fossil fuels. Thus Svante Arhenius' hypothesis of ...

Uh, the immigration system is definitely broken. Admittedly, this bill does not address the root of the problem. You have to remove the motivation to migrate, or they will keep coming. Most asylum seekers are fleeing violent drug gangs. The gangs get their power from high prices paid for a product that has practically no intrinsic value. The drugs are only expensive because they are illegal. End the war on drugs and cut off the money supply empowering the drug gangs. Break the drug gang plague and people will not need to leave their homes. But if we are not willing to decriminalize drugs and shift our focus to reduction of harm, then we are left with securing (militarizing) the border as our only option.

@Barnie2years I'm only going by what I see happening. The justice system has got him by the balls, and is not letting go. There was a 5 million dollar judgement against him, then an $83 million judgement, and any day there will be one for probably $370 million. He's already had to pay over $50 million in legal fees. There are 11 congressmen and 3 Capitol police officers suing him for trauma and injuries inflicted on January 6. Each one of those could run into the tens or hundreds of millions. His legal costs are greatly exceeding his political fund raising. He will have to start selling off assets. And he will likely be locked out of his business. The Trump Organization is already in receivership. And there's a fraud suit coming over a ponzi scheme that Trump helped promote in New York. That's just the civil cases. The criminal cases are even higher stakes. The SCOTUS is hearing argument over presidential immunity next wee likely to rule soon after that he doesn't have it. And the DC J6 case will still be on track to go to trial in March or April, soon enough for there to he a verdict before the November election. He's likely to be found guilty there. That would sink his campaign. The slowness of this whole process may be a good thing. It gives time for the country to digest the news.

@Scott321 I was not casting aspersions on vaccines or antivirals. I personally have had 5 covid shots, three shingles shots, countless tetanus shots, flu shots, DTAP shots, and at least one each of the polio and smallpox shots. And if I ever get covid or HIV I am open to taking an antiviral for that. That being said, my point about us having evolved in the absence of vaccines, antivirals, and vitamin and nutritional supplements stands. Our immune systems have evolved over hundreds of millions of years. Individuals with weaker immune systems tended to be eliminated from the population before they could reproduce. The environment is a crucible in which the immunologically strong survive and pass on their genes. Each of us walking around today is descended from an unbroken chain of survivors going back billions of years. Think about it.

These are the tactics of Islamists, and for that reason I will always struggle to find sympathy for them. And I do try to feel that sympathy. But their behavior is so atrocious, it's hard not to just write them off entirely. Am I impressed by their will and determination? Yes. Do I think they have a point that can be litigated? Yes. Do I support the terrorist tactics they have adopted in lieu of legal litigation in courts of law? No! In all the on-the-ground interviews with the residents of Gaza, I have not seen/heard one single person condemn Hamas for getting them into this mess. They only point the finger at Israel (and sometimes the USA). If someone was using me as a human shield, I would be pretty pissed. But Hamas gets a pass from every Palestinian.
