Other then two wierdo Republicans, why do you think "Republicans" want to cut SS & Medicare?
Flyingsaucesir replies on Apr 9, 2024:
@Alienbeing The Republican platform has been lower corporate taxes and deregulation at least since Reagan. There's really no mystery about that. The idea is called "trickle-down economics. Supposedly, the more money left in the hands of the billionaires, the more jobs they create, and the more money trickles down to the working class. And social programs have more recently been painted as crypto communist. It's all bullshit, if course. But the Republicans have had a very well-oiled propaganda machine working round the clock. And with the help of bloviating fascist slobs like Rush Limbaugh, so-called "conservatives" have been sold this bill of goods.

Two weirdo Republican presidents, and the other elected weirdo Republicans in Congress who follow their lead, and the tens of millions (like 70, at last count) of voting weirdo Republicans. It's not nothing, as you seem to imply. As for the why, that's easy: because their billionaire overlords don't want their taxes raised to support social welfare programs. They want to keep their billions and to hell with poor people.
The Republican platform:

Biden has made huge investments in green energy. Bigger than any Republican administration for damn sure. Who came up with a way for tens of millions of uninsured Americans to get coverage? Obama. And who signed the 1964 Civil Rights Act, and the 1965 Voting Rights Act? LBJ. And who gave millions of jobless Americans jobs, Social Security, and Medicare. FDR All Democrats, with a capital D. 🙂 Not saying the military industrial complex isn't a bloated tick on the body politic. Water is precious but we have no more or no less of it that we ever had. A big problem is that government wants to send needed water to larger areas and this will cause a shortage for some of us. Maybe a shortage for many before it is over.
Flyingsaucesir replies on Apr 4, 2024:
Actually, we do have less fresh water available than we used to. Ancient aquifers are rapidly being drawn down all around the world. And the recharge rate on fossil water is so slow, it is essentially a non-renewable resource. Once you pull that water out, it's gone. Also, as glaciers melt away, the year-round supply of fresh water they used to provide goes away too. Again, less water is available. And higher average temperatures dry things out faster. The evaporation of fresh water impounded behind dams is higher, so not only are the droughts longer, they take away more of the water we have in storage. There are too many examples of this to list, but a couple you may have heard about are the City of Atlanta's reservoir and lakes Mead and Powell. Sorry to be so full of good tidings.

@Seriousreason Bro, you can think whatever you want. That is your right. Just don't expect me to respect the crackpot ideas themselves. The stuff you have written to me is absolute bullshit. There is no middle ground on whether the 2020 election was stolen (it wasn't), or whether Trumpty Dumpty tried to stage a coup (he did), whether the attack on the Capitol on January 6 was an insurrection (it was), or whether the Mango Musolini instigated it (he did). You do know that the leaders of the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys are doing hard time for sedition, right? And that over 1,000 dumb asses who believed Orange Foolius's lies about the election having been stolen have been convicted of crimes they committed on the day, right? You know Done Cheato's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani has a $150 million judgement against him for defaming two Georgia election workers, saying they committed election fraud, right? And that Fox has to pay Dominion Voting Systems $780 million for defamation, right? For disseminating Trump's lies about the election? Well, maybe not. Fox didn't cover that bit of news. And John Eastman, one of the architects of the fake electors scheme is being disbarred, along with Sydney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro, who hoth pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit election fraud on behalf of Donald Dementia Trump. I suggest you quit listening to Fox "News" or whatever bonehead right-wing propaganda outlet you're tuning in to. They're feeding you a lot of crap. @Seriousreason The incitement was not just on the stage of the Ellipse, but also the two months of claiming the election had been stolen that preceded January 6th. And yes. Trump did say "peacfully" once. He also used the word "fight" 13 times in the same speech. Trump brought more than 60 lawsuits claiming electoral fraud, and lost them all. Trump's own Cyber Security Czar says it was the "cleanest election in history." Trump's own Attorney General says Trump's claims of electoral fraud are "bullshit." Trump called the mob to Washington on the 6th. They came because they believed his lies about the election. Trump sat on his fat ass watching the violence at the Capitol on TV and did nothing to stop it. Instead, he threw gasoline on the fire with a tweet that put his own VP's head in a noose. White House staff tried to get him to call off his dogs, and he refused for 3 hours. Well in advance of the 6th Trump had slates of fake electors ready to go, ready for Pence to steal the election for him. Failing that, Trump had minions in the house and senate ready to throw up enough smoke to have Congress declare the results invalid, thus giving it to the state legislatures to decide. And failing that, he had his MAGA mob there to shut the whole joint session down, again leaving it up to the states. And with a majority of them controlled be Republicans, Trump would be declared the winner. It almost worked. Trump almost pulled 9ff his coup. But he didn't count on his VP and members of Congress being so stalwart. They stood pat and completed their constitutional duty. Trump underestimated them, because he figured they would do what he would do under the same circumstances: turn tail and run. Like most bullies, behind the tough talk he's really just a quivering coward. Nancy Pelosi has more moral courage in her little finger than Trumpty Dumpty has in his whole bloated carcass. Pretty much everything Trump touches turns to shit. The only thing he has ever succeeded at was playing a successful business man on TV. Funny how "reality" TV is anything but real. Let's say, just for the sake of argument, that I'm wrong about all this. Let's say Trump is actually innocent. Then why doesn't he ask for a speedy trial to clear his name as quickly as possible? Why would he rather go through the entire campaign season and election with this cloud hanging over him? An innocent man would want his day in court. Hell, it should be a cakewalk for him. The burden of proof is on the prosecution. And the bar for conviction is high: unanimous agreement beyond a reasonable doubt. Yet all Trump does is delay, delay, delay.

@Seriousreason A jury of citizens heard Carroll and other witnesses and found them credible. Trump didn't even offer a defense beyond claiming he "never met her" and she wasn't "his type." But there are photos of them together, and Trump mistakenly identified Carroll as his second wife. So obviously he met her and she was his type. Trump is a bad liar, but what he lacks in imagination he makes up with volume. The man can't open his mouth without some kind of calumny ir mendacity spilling out. There is absolutely no indication that Carroll is crazy. However, listening to Trump's weird word salad it's clear that he has a few screws loose. So you want to blame that bridge collapse on...who exactly? Because we have all seen the video; the lights going out on the ship; the impact with the bridge support. Biden is good, but it sounds like you want Superman for president. 😂😂😂 If you want to go after oligarchs, there are some right here in the good old USA that could use a licking. I'm talking about the owners of the corporations who took advantage of the choked supply chain to jack up their prices way beyond reason and left them in the stratosphere just because they could. But don't believe me; just look at their quarterly profit and loss statements. For the profiteering robber barons, the pandemic was a windfall -- a gift that keeps on giving. You appear not to have watched the J6 Select Committee hearings, or read the indictments, or know that, except under Trump, federal prosecutors don't bring charges unless they have the evidence to convict. Well, happily, it doesn't matter what you think, because 5 grand juries in 4 different jurisdictions heard enough credible evidence to indict the orange foolius. But you don't really need to know that. Just look at how Trumpty Dumpty is reacting. An innocent man would want to clear his name, and have his day in court as soon as possible. But Don Poorleon only seeks to delay, delay, delay. He knows he's guilty and when a trial jury hears the evidence, he's toast!

To deny the very real and numerous accomplishments of the Biden administration is sheer willful blindness. Biden is adroit and effective. Trump is so incompetent, he literally couldn't do anything right. He couldn't kill Obamacare, he couldn't pass an infrastructure bill, he didn't build the wall he promised, he badly fumbled COVID-19 and caused some 200,000 excess deaths, he tried to extort a personal political favor from a a foreign country by withholding military aid that Congress had already funded, tried to overturn a fair election that he lost, falsified his business records in furtherance of a scheme to hide the fact of a sexual encounter with a porn actress while his wife was home with their newborn son, tried to overturn an election that he lost fair and square by inciting a mob to attack the Capitol in order to disrupt the counting of electoral college votes in a joint session of Congress. Then he stole reams of classified documents and left them unguarded in his beach club where any number of foreign agents could have photographed or stolen them. Then he lied, subborned perjury, and obstructed justice when the government came asking for its documents. All Trump did was give a big, fat tax break to the wealthiest Americans and corporations, while stripping away environmental protections and ignoring the climate crisis. What a loser! We don't even need to get into the facts that Trump is an adjudicated rapist, and that his company has been found liable for systematic fraud over many years, and the self-styled billionaire cant come up with the cash to pay the fines levied against him. What a loser! 😂😂😂 Meanwhile Joe Biden has quietly taken care of business. He got the biggest infrastructure bill in history passed, lowered prescription drug prices through Medicare, got American manufacturing humming, including strategically important semiconductor chips, rebuilt our relationships with our allies, shepherded the country through the pandemic, reduced inflation more than any other developed country, got the stock market hitting all-time highs, added millions of jobs, and provided the economy a soft landing coming out of the pandemic. He would sign a bipartisan bill that would immediately help solve the immigration problem but Trump and his MAGA minions wont let the bill come up for a vote because they would rather bitch about the border and fix it.

We have pushed the CO2 concentration up so fast that the temperature can't keep up. But that won't last long. The ice is melting fast.

@Tejas "A well-regulated militia...." And they had muzzle-loading muskets in mind, not semi-automatic weapons with high capacity magazines. 18-year-olds in the military receive extensive training, and are under strict supervision. Unless they are in or transiting to or from a combat zone, their weapons are stored in an armory, locked up and guarded 24/7. You should know this. The 2nd Amendment does say John Q. Citizen can or should be allowed to have an assault rifle. BTW, a semi-automatic AR-15 is definitely an assault rifle, just as a bolt-action Enfield is, and an M1 Garand is. It doesn't have to be fully automatic to be an assault rifle You should know this. You are still faced with the fact that red states with their lax gun laws have many more gun deaths per capita than blue states. And the USA has way more gun violence per capita than any other developed nation. And the vaccination rates in red states are way lower than in blue states. And the COVID-19 death rates are way higher in red states than in blue states And these things are all related. People in red states apparently tend to buy into conspiracy theories, and the fear and hated sold by the NRA, the gun lobby, and the Republican Party. We would have already made common sense legislation universal, but for the disproportionately large representation red states have in government. A tiny state like North Dakota has two senators, same as a massive state like California. And the House is way overdue for expansion. California should have many more representatives in Congress than we do at present. And the Supreme Court is supposed to have one justice for each Circuit Court of Appeals. Right now there are only 9 justices, but there are 13 Circuit Courts. Change is a comin'! 😂😂😂 I'm speaking as a lifelong gun owner/operator, btw. You are on very shaky ground if all you can do is parrot the tired dogmas of the likes of embezzler Wayne "hand-in-the-till" LaPierre, a self-dealing slimeball if there ever was one.

@Tejas I guess the lessons from Uvalde and many, many other incidents really are lost on you. The fact is, the idea that a good guy with a gun stops a bad guy with a gun is simply a red herring, completely without merit. The bad guy almost always shoots one or more people before he is stopped. Higher powered weapons kill more effectively. Higher capacity magazines facilitate more shots, more killing. If an 18-year-old is not mature enough to buy or imbibe alcohol, what makes you think they are mature enough to buy or wield weapons of mass murder? Since when does anybody need a military-style assault rifle for personal protection? They don't unless they live in eastern Ukraine. Why should there be gun show loopholes in the existing laws? There is no good reason. Why shouldn't someone guilty of domestic violence have their guns confiscated? It makes perfect sense. Why shouldn't everyone who wants to buy a gun be subjected to an extensive background check and a reasonable waiting period? They should! Why should people other than sworn officers of the law be allowed to openly carry guns in public places? If you want to live like they do in Mogadishu, you should move there. Let's be clear about what we mean by reasonable gun laws: No open carry No assault rifles No high capacity magazines No gun show loopholes No gun sales to people under age 21 No guns for violent felons No guns for domestic abusers No guns for mentally impaired Universal background checks Concealed carry with permit only These measures still leave a lot of room for responsible people to own guns for personal protection and/or sport.

That's 364 mass shootings IN SCHOOLS. Not every kid enrolled has been affected. Just every one who was present on the day THEIR SCHOOL had a mass shooting. About 1,000 students per school, on average. Elementary schools are smaller; they bring the average down. High schools are much bigger. They bring the average up. So yeah, about three hundred sixty thousand students have been affected by mass shootings IN THEIR OWN SCHOOLS since the Columbine High School shooting. I think we are meant to understand the word "affected" to mean any or all of the following: * being scared shitless in a place that is supposed to be a safe space * forced to hunker down in classrooms * need to barricade doors * be absolutely silent while a killer stalks you * hear gunfire on school grounds * witness fellow students being shot * witness teachers being shot * being shot and surviving * being shot and dying * being evacuated while holding up hands * having to return to school * attending memorials for murdered schoolmates * nightmares, PTSD * needing counseling * watching helplessly while the Republican Party blocks any and all meaningful gun legislation * realizing that that kowtowing to the gun lobby is more important than students' physical and mental well being * etc. Obviously a student or teacher who is shot and killed is not evacuated with their hands in the air. And the dead don't get PTSD.
