Most of them are unaware that Fox "news" paid out $780 million for promulgating Combover Caligula's Big Lie; they still think the election was stolen. And even though Joe Biden got 7 million more votes than Orange Foolius, his victory in the electoral college came down to only 40-something thousand votes in a few purple precincts. We certainly hope they will never succeed, but assuming that they can't is probably not the best way to go about insuring that they never do. We are already on a slippery slope. The Christian nationalists have already managed to place the words "In God we trust" on our money, and "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. These unfortunate changes took a long time to occur, and did not happen recently, but we should not feel too relaxed; their proponents are playing a long game. We have never been closer to losing our democracy than we are right now. We have an openly authoritarian candidate for the presidency (one with deep support among Evangelical Christian voters) whose loss in the last election came down to only a few tens of thousands of votes spread out over several purple states. His followers are committed and not likely to back a 3rd-party candidate. Can the same be said of the incumbent's supporters? Beware! A false sense of security could be our undoing.

Flyingsaucesir replies on Nov 5, 2023:
@raymondahult The way I deal with the issue of whether god exists or not is to think about the problem in terms of probabilities. What is the probability that a god with the properties of Yaweh exists? The scientist in me won't let me say "zero," because it's impossible, in a universe so vast, with so much still unknown, to prove that such a being does not exist. This is basically in line with the very reasonable position of most agnostics. But we don't have to stop there. We can consider other factors too, like the human propensity to invent gods (more than a thousand, right?), and make up stories. And a lot of stuff in the stories is outside nature, and is never actually observed. This reduces the probably, in my mind, that any of the stories are true. And after looking high and low, and failing to find any independently-verifiable evidence of gods, the probability of their existence is further reduced. And if an all-knowing, all-powerful, loving God exists, why does he/she/it allow so much stupidity and unnecessary suffering? Then there is the mountain of scientific evidence indicating that all life on Earth evolved from a single, common ancestor, without any need of divine intervention. And that the first living cells could have spontaneously self-assembled through entirely natural processes. And that the Earth and all the other planets in our solar system were likewise formed through natural processes. And that our galaxy, the Milky Way, is rather ordinary, and one of billions. And we can see stars and galaxies in various stages of development, all acting according to natural laws of physics and chemistry. And we even see evidence of a beginning, the Big Bang, and no supernatural cause is needed to explain it. Taking all this into account, the probability of any god existing seems vanishingly small. For me, the probability is so small that I defy Pascal's wager. I won't take that bet. I'm still an agnostic, but I live my life like an atheist.

Flyingsaucesir replies on Nov 4, 2023:
Which charges are politically motivated? The Florida classified docs case is mostly about obstruction of justice, partly about national security and espionage. Many, many people have been prosecuted for far less than what Trump did. The two J6 cases, one in DC, one in GA, are about an attempted coup by defrauding the American people and other illegal means. These cases are unique in American history. Are we to ignore a frontal attack on the critical institutions of our democracy? The Manhattan fraudulent business docs case is typical for that jurisdiction. Prosecuting people for filing false business records is the "bread and butter" of the Manhattan DA's office. Likewise tax fraud. The election fraud element is a little less common, but it's not the first time a crooked politician has been prosecuted for defrauding the voters of New York. The civil fraud case against the Trump crime family is incredibly well supported by documentary evidence. So much so that the judge was able to rule summarily that Trump engaged in bank, insurance, and tax fraud for decades. The case is so strong, there is virtually no chance of the judge's ruling being overturned on appeal. The trial now is only about how much Trump will pay in fines and restitution. Might Trump have avoided all this if he had stayed out of politics? Certainly he would not have ever had access to the classified documents, so that whole case would have never occurred. Likewise the J6 cases. Likewise the hush-money/election-fraud case. The false records and tax fraud portions of that might have eventually be prosecuted on their own; we'll never know. Does it matter? The facts are that evidence of crimes came to light and prosecutors are doing what we pay them to do. Fin.

Flyingsaucesir replies on Nov 4, 2023:
@captfeelgood One man's terrorist is another's freedom fighter. I can find no justification for Hamas's actions on October 7. But however heinous and inhumane they were, they were also somewhat predictable. I mean, they did not come out of a clear blue sky, without provocation. No. For 75 years Israelis (Zionists) have pushed Palestinian Arabs off their land, building instead their own exclusively Jewish settlements. This continued expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank and Gaza has been deemed illegal by the United Nations. But Israel heeds no one; not even its greatest ally, the USA, who has urged Israel to cease settlement construction on disputed land. The weaker party in the dispute cannot possibly fight back conventionally, so they resort to asymmetric warfare. The problem with terms like "terrorists" in a situation like this one is that they tend to obscure the history, the wider context in which the conflict takes place. Sure, the acts of Hamas on 10/7 were atrocious, but so is 75 years of pushing a poor minority off their land, boxing them in, creating an apartheid system. And, to some extent, even this is understandable, given the rhetoric coming from that poor minority, calling for the total annihilation of Israel. To unravel this mess, we have to go all the way back to the beginning, in 1948, when sharp-elbowed Zionists started killing Arab livestock, burning Arab crops, emptying out Arab towns and villages. There was an original sin, and it should be clear by now that it will not be forgotten.

Flyingsaucesir replies on Nov 3, 2023:
@yvilletom Not sure what you mean by your second sentence above. The Cosmic Background Microwave Radiation is one of three powerful pieces of evidence that the big bang occurred. Penzias and Wilson stumbled upon the CBMR by accident in 1965, and were later awarded the Nobel Prize for their discovery. Later, the Hubble space telescope photographed the radiation; the image is widely known as the universe's baby picture. 😂 Another important piece of evidence supporting the big bang theory is the red shift in the spectra of stars and galaxies. The red shift was first observed in 1929, by Edwin Hubble, from the Mt. Wilson observatory near Los Angeles, California. Hubble discovered that the more distant the galaxy, the greater its red shift. The red shift is actually doppler effect, brought about by luminous objects speeding away from the observer. Looking out into deep space, the pattern we see in every direction is increasing red shift with distance. This can only happen if the universe is expanding. This expansion is also considered evidence that the big bang occurred. Einstein's theory of relativity, completed in 1915, predicted that we should discover evidence of a big bang before the red shift or the CBMR were discovered. Relativity says that the universe must have begun as a single point, called a singularity. Confirmation of a prediction made by a separate, well-supported theory can also be considered a type of evidence, albeit theoretical/mathematical evidence. https://study.com/academy/lesson/evidence-for-the-big-bang-theory-background-radiation-red-shift-and-expansion.html#:~:text=There%20are%20several%20main%20pieces,called%20cosmic%20microwave%20background%20radiation.

The global war on terror was doomed from its beginning to fail. First, you can't kill an ideology. Second, military response only hardens the ideology. Third, pouring energy, money, and human capital into military intervention draws resources away from actual solutions. Fourth, one man's terrorist is another's freedom fighter. Nowhere is this more true than in Israel/Palestine. Sharp-elbowed Zionists started pushing Palestinians off their land in 1948, and the process has basically continued, through the expansion of illegal Jewish settlements, ever since. The weaker, dispossessed party has two choices: either capitulate or resort to asymmetric warfare. The willingness of Palestinians to sit under Israeli bombs in order to make a point reminds me of an anecdote related by Marlon Brando in his role as Kurtz, in the film Apocalypse Now. Kurtz tells of a Cambodian or Vietnamese village where his Special Forces unit had come in and vaccinated all the children, then left. An old man came running after the soldiers; returning to the village, they found a pile of vaccinated, then hacked-off, little arms. Kurtz himself was mightily impressed by the display of will. As we should be by that of the Palestinians.

The situation in the Middle East is a result of the crazy Obama and Biden foreign policy of appeasing Iran. When Trump was president we had relative stability in the Middle East with the Abraham accords and had Trump been re-elected we likely wouldn’t have the problems we are having today.
Flyingsaucesir replies on Oct 30, 2023:
@Trajan61 Oh, so you don't think toppling the democratically-elected Iran government and installing the puppet Shah had something to do with destabilizing the region? Or failing at nation building in Iraq after toppling Saddam Hussein 50 years later? Both of these brain-dead actions (by Republican presidents) were done on behalf of...not the people, but the oil companies. The reason we have no credibility there is because our actions have always been inspired by A. greed, and B. stupidity. We can't claim any moral high ground.

How about, based on nothing but a pack of lies, start a war in Iraq? Kill 200,000 Iraqi civilians, create an opening for ISIS, pour American blood and treasure into the desert sands of Mesopotamia? Ummm, that was the Republicans too. Let's see, what else? How about attempt to disenfranchise 81 million American voters in a failed coup attempt? It's a reasonable question. The answer is that rivers evolve in the sense that entire landscapes change with time. And the rivers that drain these watersheds must change with the landscape. Mountain rivers run faster and straighter. Flatland rivers run slower and tend to meander.

Which atheists said it can't be done? Since when have atheists been science deniers?
Flyingsaucesir replies on Oct 19, 2023:
@skado As usual, you lay out a cogent and compelling argument. The coup de gras is Hitchens' own words! 😂 But there are a couple of points I will endeavor to illuminate further. First, science is not solely the process we use to investigate nature. It is also all of the knowledge that we gain through the practice of that process. And you are right: science does not explicitly have an education function; that is left up to schools, journalists, autodidacts, and scientists with a natural, scientific, evangelical bent (e.g. Bill Nye, NDG Tyson, etc., and every college professor who does science as well as teach it. Second, religion may not have ever had the explicit function of doing science, but it pretends to explain many things in nature, and that is the purview of science. We don't need to get balled up over the meaning of the word "magisteria" (though I am thrilled to finally learn it's true meaning), or what Gould or even the Hitch meant by it. The fact is, there are some natural phenomena that (some) religions pretend to explain, and they do a shockingly bad job of it. Not only does religion often try to compete with science, it has elbows as sharp as razors. Third, the indoctrination starts early, and is not relegated to only one day per week. Every day, in the public school where I taught, right after the the last bell, came the announcement telling us where Fellowship of Christian Athletes was meeting (the shop teacher was also a coach and a Bible thumper). And then there were the field trips to the Creation "museum," led by an English teacher. And of course there is always pressure from the family and peer group. And the corollary to FOMO (fear of missing out) which is even more terrifying, fear of being kicked out and shunned. The syllogism of science and religion is not a single perfect circle. Neither is it two separate circles. There is overlap. Religion is trespassing on the territory of science. Religion used to have the concession over that disputed territory, but it got fired for cause. If all religions were to swear off teaching the literal truth of creation myths and the like tomorrow, well, it would be a good start, but it would not be enough. Religions (some of them; most of them) would still be teaching people to believe in things for which there is no evidence (e.g. gods, souls, etc.), and that is just bad policy. I have said it before, and I'll say it again: the bottom of the slippery slope whose summit is putting faith over reason is sectarian violence and willful rejection of whatever does not conform to one's pre-conceived notions. Finally, you keep implying that religion does a good job of teaching morality and ethics. If that's the case, why are they always trying to kill each other? Or trying to tell women ...

Flyingsaucesir replies on Oct 19, 2023:
@skado Heh heh! Well said, my friend. But however urgently needed a global meta-religion is needed, there is probably less chance of indoctrinating the 80% in that than there is of adequately educating them in science. Notwithstanding my skepticism, I would hear you sketch out the profile of your global meta-religion. (You don't have to expend the energy that you obviously do with your paintings, which are fabulous, by the way!) Now I have to admit that as a science educator I did drink the "every student can learn" kool-aide. And even after an entire career's worth of witnessing with my own eyes the intransigent laziness of the masses, I remain convinced that educating them is possible. A major stumbling block is religion. When people have already been indoctrinated in hokum and balderdash, you have an extra-steep hill to climb. Imagine if you didn't have that nonsense to compete with! Alas, that is probably just a pipe dream. But I still think that if you (we) can reach a certain critical mass, where a sufficient number of people in the students' environment say, "No, the teacher is right: we all did evolve from a single common ancestor; the earthworm really IS your cousin," then we will be "cooking with gas," as my dear departed grandfather used to say. In order to reach that golden tipping point, we're going to have to do education better. I did not attend SDSU (I went to UCSB), but as of 20-something years ago they had a professor of biology who rejected Darwinism in favor of.... I'm not sure what; something along the lines of biblical creationism. When I first joined the Science Department where I spent 19 years, I was assigned to teach 3 different subjects in 4 different classrooms. Each of the classrooms was already occupied by a teacher, and I was only there for the one period per day they weren't required to teach a class. In one of the classrooms where I taught biology, there was another teacher who also taught biology. After a while, we got to know each other and one day she told me that she really did not understand darwinian evolution. I mean, she did not know how it works, or that it is the grand unifying frigging theory of the science that she was credentialed by the State of California to teach! I promptly gave her a primer on the spot, and she seemed to get it. But I don't think she ever really fully appreciated the magnitude of what I told her. She had been brought up in the Mormon Church of Latter Day Saints, and just didn't give the origin of species much thought. Her passion was molecular biology, not evolution. The Science Department Chair was young and superficially competent and confident. In reality, he was inexperienced, egotistical, and self-serving.
