Trajan61 comments on May 19, 2022:
Hell Biden declared war on oil and gas his first day in office. For that reason you can sure blame higher fuel prices on Biden. And excessive government spending has contributed greatly to high inflation, the worse we’ve seen since Jimmy Carter was president.
Flyingsaucesir replies on May 19, 2022:
@Trajan61 The higher fuel prices are not due any shortage. It is price gouging. The evidence is the record-breaking profits the oil companies are raking in. Spending has been out of control for decades. We pissed away trillions in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Fed practiced quantitative easing all through the Trump Administration. So don't try to lay it all on sleepy Joe.

A 40% miscarriage rate may be a low estimate.
Flyingsaucesir replies on May 18, 2022:
@BDair I did not explain myself very well. What I meant was that the human genome is incredibly complex, with over 3 billion base pairs, forming both coding and non-coding sequences. The coding sequences number about 25 thousand genes, with many of those having regulatory roles controlling the expression of other genes. For individual genes, multiple variations may exist. During sexual reproduction, the variations get randomly shuffled, and each parent donates a unique set of genes to the offspring. The two sets of genes we inherit from our parents have to form a harmonious union or the resulting embryo will not be viable. And with so many gene pairs, there is a lot of potential for things to go wrong. A couple might have to try many times before a fortuitous combination is formed. There are some couples (about 0.1% of the population) who cannot conceive at all because their genes simply cannot form a harmonious union. Each of the people, the man and the woman, can have perfectly healthy children with other people, just not with each other. Another factor to consider is genetic defects. Some genes are particularly prone to mutations, and the incident rates of a host of genetic diseases gives us an insight into these mutation rates, which are generally predictable in number year after year. Genetic diseases often do not harm viability until after birth. Sometimes the genetic disease does not express itself until adulthood. So we have genes that work perfectly well some of variations but not with others. And then we have gene variations that cause fatal disease. It all adds up to life being a pretty iffy proposition.
How do we hold them accountable for the damage they cause?

@Tejas No, I'm saying that there are not a lot of people saying that men should have no say in matters of reproduction. It's a trope invented by the political right to claim victimhood, again, as they so often do. It's exactly like their cries of "cancel culture." A straw man, a red herring.

Matias comments on May 7, 2022:
Depends on how you define "fair treatment" Is it fair that Group A must be disadvantaged today in order to make up for an injustice committed against Group B in the past? The answer depends on whether you focus on individuals or on groups.
Flyingsaucesir replies on May 7, 2022:
Good question. If you are talking about affirmative action in hiring or school admissions,...yikes, that's a tough one. I kind of lean in favor, but only in limited cases, and only where real merit is evident. And then only as long as a historic imbalance exists. The minute parity is reached, end the program. If you are talking about reparations for slavery,...yikes! That is also a tough one. I think any approach that includes direct monetary payments to individuals would be impracticable. There has been do much genetic mixing that it becomes impossible to sort out which descendants need and deserve direct help, and which have benefitted from the status quo. And then there all the families who fought for the cause of liberty. Should they be compensated too? It's too complicated. Instead, I would institute programs that lift up ALL Americans.

@Trajan61 PS: Immigration is always going to take place. Human beings are parapatetic. And it is arguably a good thing. It enriches culture. It mixes up the gene pool. And it can be managed. We actually do a pretty good job of regulating immigration into the United States. Considering how many people want to get in versus how many do get in. What we CAN do and OUGHT to do is slow the birth rate world wide.

@Trajan61 I think nuclear can, will, and should be part of the solution. But there are big drawbacks to nuclear: high cost, disposal of spent fuel, carbon footprint from massive cement structures, risk of radioactive leaks, vulnerability to both physical and cyber terrorist attack,...Not that some of these problems can't be mitigated. But rather than put our eggs in a centralized basket, we would be better off with a distributed system. That way it becomes impossible to knock out the whole grid, or even a large part of it. Hydrogen will be a key ingredient in the green energy future. You can collect from intermittent sources like solar and wind and store excess energy as hydrogen gas. It is completely renewable, and will never, ever run out because it comes from water and goes back to water. The process or cracking water to produce hydrogen (electrolysis) is well understood and ready to go. For vehicles, hydrogen has the advantage of being light weight. And you can fill up a hydrogen tank in only minutes, instead of waiting hours or days to charge a battery. And batteries eventually wear out and have to be disposed of. The process for recycling lithium batteries has not been perfected. Its difficult and expensive, and there is no reason to think it will ever be cheap and easy. Hydrogen requires no recycling. In using it, you produce pure water, the original source material.
