Do you believe in life after death
David_Cooper comments on Mar 24, 2023:
Whatever it is in us that's sentient, that cannot be destroyed as it cannot be made out of more than one part. If it was made out of more than one part without any of the component parts being sentient, the whole composite thing could not magically be sentient. So, that sentient thing is not ...
Flyingsaucesir replies on Mar 24, 2023:
To be sentient means to possess higher level consciousness. Consciousness is a product of complex neural activity in a brain. When the body dies, the brain stops functioning, and that is the end of sentience in that being.

Flyingsaucesir replies on Mar 22, 2023:
@rainmanjr No, my friend, they are not the same. A hypothesis is an educated guess, one that can be tested for accuracy. Hypotheses that, after rigorous testing, turn out to be unassailably true are called facts. For instance: Alfred Wegener hypothesized that the American continents had once been connected to Europe and Africa. He based this hypothesis on the shapes of the continents and on certain fossils and rocks found on both sides of the Atlantic ocean. A theory is a unifying explanation for a diverse set of facts. For instance, the Theory of Plate Tectonics explains... why the continents look like they once fit together, why there are volcanic mid-ocean ridges, why there is a "ring of fire" around the Pacific ocean basin, why the western part of California is sliding northward along the San Andreas fault, why deep earthquakes are often concentrated in Benioff zones, why there are pieces of ocean floor in the Sierra Nevada mountains and in the Himalayas and the Alps, etc., why no ocean floor rocks are more than about 100 million years old, why ocean floors have "striped" magnetic anomaly patterns, why there are tsunamis, why there are island arcs, Why Turkey recently experienced those massive earthquakes, etc., etc., etc. The explanation for all of these facts is called the Theory of Plate Tectonics. It says that the Earth's rigid crust is broken up into plates, and these move around constantly, driven by convection currents in the mantle. These movements are the cause of all the afore-mentioned phenomena, and many more that I have not mentioned. Now you know homie. Don't blow it. 🙂

Flyingsaucesir replies on Mar 21, 2023:
@Alienbeing It is a matter for interpretation. Unless we can get one or more justices privately saying what they actually think in texts messages, emails, or on a hot mike, we will probably never find definitive proof. Notwithstanding the lack of such evidence, the basic facts of the case do sustain the notion that the Court's "conservative" majority is siding with the religious"right" on the question of abortion. In giving the slightest credence to the idea that a fertilized egg or an embryo is a person they are going along with a religious opinion that is not supported by science. They broke 50 years of precedent to make that ruling. The reasoning given in the majority opinion is laughably weak, and really only serve as a smoke screen. So to opine that the Court is following a religious agenda is not at all crazy.

Done Cheato has been "invited" to testify before a grand jury in New York next week. This is normally the last thing that happens before an indictment is handed down. So it's kinda early to be saying that Trumpty Dumpty is getting off Scott free. A DA down in Georgia says that "indictments are imminent." We'll see what that means. DOJ's special counsel Jack Smith still has time to indict Trump. If it's going to happen, it has to be this year. Again, we shall see.

Even though it doesn't make me feel good, it's better to know who he really is than to not know. It puzzles me that he apparently never questioned the validity of the Rasmussen poll that set him off. It makes me think that he was already primed to go off; that there was a latent racial animosity just waiting for a reason to raise its ugly head.

@ChestRockfield Yeah, I feel you, but saying "I would push a button" is a long, long way from actually spilling another human being's blood. Have you ever killed a large animal? Seen it shake and writhe in its death throes? Heard the rattle in its throat? I have, and I can tell you that killing is very nasty work. I will stump and debate and argue and harangue and, yes, compromise all day long before I will go killing people over their political views. That being said, there is certainly a line somewhere out there where I would unleash hell upon my enemies. But we're not there yet. Let's first use the rule of law to hold the ringleaders accountable. And any who violently rise up to defend them, we can crush them in good conscience, and sleep well at night.

Flyingsaucesir replies on Feb 26, 2023:
Yeah, you need to provide evidence to support your claim. Go do your homework. Even if we give your statement the benefit of the doubt, it still does not help your case. Any city is bound to have more crime than a rural area. And yet the crime in cities is not enough to skew the damning state data. You are still faced with the undeniable fact that states with Republican leadership have more gun violence.

I am old enough to remember the Vietnam war, and how unpopular it was. Did the draft dodging that occurred then significantly shorten the war? Probably not. But it did symbolize a resistance that cut deeply through society. And today's Russia is not 1960s/70s America. We lost around 55,000 men in Vietnam over 15 years. The Russian casualty rate is much higher. In one year they have had, by some estimates, as many as 60,000 men killed, 200,000+ total casualties. Even convicts have mothers.

@CourtJester All those things I mentioned are facts, not opinions. That you deny this is absolutely not a surprise. As for bringing back firing squads, it was something Trump said he wanted to do. https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/trump-death-penalty-firing-squad-executions-1234679447/ Not that it really matters what form of execution is used. Trump just said that to titillate his gun-living base of supporters. The important message in the meme is that another Trump presidency would represent loss of liberty, and the end of rule of law and democracy in America. Do you really need this explained to you? Wow.

@CourtJester Trump announced to the world that he trusts Vlad the Invader more than America's own intelligence agents. Vlad brought his people in, but Trump excluded all Americans from his meetings with Putin. Trump did his best to weaken the NATO alliance. Trump has been laundering money for Russian oligarchs for decades. Putin is the chief oligarch. Trump tried to overturn an election that he legitimately lost. He knew that he lost. Trump incited a mob to attack the Capitol. He knew they were armed and didn't care, because, as he said, they were his people. I know none of this matters to you; no amount of evidence will ever convince you. Trump gave a huge tax break to the wealthiest Americans, endorses wacko replacement theory, and continues to give aid and comfort to Christian nationalists and white supremacist scum. And that's alright with you, isn't it? Another name for the court jester: fool.
