Decades ago I remember the day.
Surfpirate comments on May 20, 2018:
That is definitely a wtf moment, I had a similar experience in a Pentecostal church with the girl who would later become my wife. People flopping around on the floor, speaking gibberish while the rest of the folks chanted Amen or sang hymns, got my ass out of there Hasta Pronto and never went back. I was more of an Agnostic at that point but Atheism was waiting for me right around the corner. :D
On any Sunday.

Any hotheads here?
Surfpirate comments on May 20, 2018:
My sister was making her chili con carne one afternoon and her husband came home and kept pushing her to add more chili flakes, this was back in the 70's so there wasn't a big selection of chilies on offer at the supermarkets in Canada. My sister makes a respectable chili con carne but my brother-inlaw was a guy who prided himself on being able to eat hot food. My sister became annoyed at his interference (she's a bit of a kitchen Nazi) but she added some more chili flakes just to appease him. Her husband goes upstairs to have a shower just as she is serving up the chili con carne which is really insulting to anyone who cooks but then there's a reason she later divorced him. :D As he is going up the stair he hollers back, make sure mine is good and hot, I don't like your weak chili. So my sister grabs the jar of chili flakes and gives it a good shake over his bowl of chili which is now cooling on the table and the top of the jar pops of emptying half a jar of chili flakes into his bowl of chili. My sister grabs the spoon to try and ladle out most of the chili flakes but then she gets that gleam in her eye that I know from growing up with her, pure deviltry and instead of scooping out the chili flakes she stirs them in. 10 minutes later my brother-inlaw bounces down the steps and starts to chow down as my sister and I are finishing our own bowls of chili, he manages to get a couple of spoonfuls down before he breaks into a profuse sweat and starts to drink his glass of milk. He looks up at my sister questioningly so I ask him 'Still not hot enough for you?' so he says it is fine and goes back to eating again but after a couple more spoonfuls he can't take it anymore. He sees that my sister and I are eating our bowls of chili with no adverse effects so he grabs my sister's bowl and takes a spoonful, my sister and I start laughing and then my sister runs to the bathroom and locks herself in while my brother-inlaw finishes a whole carton of milk. :D Served him right and he cool down once the milk went to work although I better her burned the toilet bowl the next morning.
Any hotheads here?
Surfpirate comments on May 20, 2018:
I like the heat but sometimes it can go too far. I used to poker with a group of guys in Bermuda and we took turns hosting the game, chili was usually on the menu and I would make two pots when I hosted the game - regular (a couple of jalapenos) and hot (several jalapenos and a scotch bonnet). One of the guys, Matt, really liked the hot chili so the next time he hosted the game he made regular, hot and volcanic. The regular and hot were the same as mine but the volcanic had 4 ghost chilies in it, on top of the hot recipe. I tried it out without knowing what the ingredients were and I thought the top of my head was going to come off as the big spoonful of chili exploded in my stomach. Ghost chilies are about 300 times hotter than jalapenos for those who have never tried them, I managed to keep it down with a glass of milk but my stomach was rumbling and I was sweating through the whole poker tournament.
I am going thru my late step-fathers tools.

Hebrews and American Indians - Land Claims
Surfpirate comments on May 17, 2018:
Did the Jewish people have a right to the lands of Israel after 2 millennium of absence, it's unlikely that such a claim would stand up in a normal court of law but the right of the Jewish people to buy a chunk of land from the British who had stolen it by force of arms is certainly legal. There are only a few ways to claim land, be born to it as a birth right, buy it from the current owner and seize it by force, these are the time honoured methods of claiming title to land. I would argue that the Jewish people bought the original tract of land from the British and have used it effectively as a beach head to seize more lands by force of arms and are continuing to expand to this very day. Some would argue that the Zionists who seem to be in charge in Israel will only be happy when they achieve the area of land known as Greater Israel but this would mean taking land from several Arab countries so expect a lot more blood shed. As to the native peoples' claim to land in North America, those can be settled in the courts because of their birth right or through purchase of ancestral lands. As the chief of one of the bands that owns a very successful casino that I built the hotel for once told me, 'Don't worry about us, we're getting our land back, one pull of the slot machine arm at a time.'

Why are people so desperate to be diagnosed with a mental health issue ?
Surfpirate comments on May 17, 2018:
I have to agree with you that there are plenty of assholes in the world but one of the main symptoms for most people suffering from mental illnesses is an inability to accept that they have a disease. Those who suffer from schizophrenia like my younger brother are classic examples of deniers of anything being wrong with their mental state, it's the world that is insane and not them. You can find out more about mental illness and how to deal with members of your family who have a mental illness at NAMI https://www.nami.org/. My wife and I took their course after my younger brother threatened to kill us during a particularly bad psychotic episode. The stigma around mental illness is still out there but it keeps getting better as more people become educated about the diseases and how they can be treated.

It's been said that if you have 2 true friends in your life then you have done well for yourself. That doesn't mean that they are with you from cradle to grave but that you shared their company no matter how briefly. There are plenty of ready made friends to be had in social groups, in particular you can find these people at churches but just be aware that when the chips are really down they won't be your friends, much like those deadbeat friends who help you get into trouble. Personally, I have found the easiest way to make friends is to be true to myself, that way I tend to attract people that I am compatible with into my life. I also find it is better to have a few solid friends than a hundred fair weather associates and if you are really lucky you might find a true friend along the way. There way a sign on a friends wall and it went something like this: True friends are like diamonds, precious and rare False friends are like autumn leaves, found everywhere.

The JW's are very organized now when it comes to canvasing for new members with assigned areas and streets that are distributed to their 'field service workers' and 'pioneers', most of them now carry tablets so the information is there and they check it in order to meet their productivity quotas, no point wasting time on a do not call door. They'll leave you alone and if they don't then a call to the Kingdom Hall and a message left to the Elders will work, Presto! no more Saturday morning disruptions.

Does anyone want to share Jobsite Accident stories, or is that too depressing?
Surfpirate comments on May 16, 2018:
They're not depressing if they are funny and nobody gets permanently injured, sometimes an accident is really a negligence and can be a lesson learned. I remember as a carpenter's apprentice I worked for a guy called 'The Black Irish' I can't even remember his real name anymore but he was a real character who had been in construction forever and a day, apparently Christ apprenticed under him. Anyway, the Black Irish had a teenage son who he decided to 'man up' by putting him to work at 14 for the summer, my foreman got the kid and was told to not let the kid anywhere near the power tools and specifically not the air nailer. Back in the day the safeties were disabled so you could bounce nail so for once the Black Irish made some sense and his kid was really green in any case. Sure enough, the kid is always pestering the foreman Chris to be able to use the air nailer but instead he gets all the joe jobs, sweeping up, coffee runs etc. So come lunch time we are surprised to here the air nailer go off as we are sitting out front of the job site eating our sandwiches POW, POW, POW ---OWW! We rush back into the partially framed house and there's the Black Irish's kid with his hand nailed to the sub floor, he had snuck off and tried to fire a couple of practice nails but the nailer had bounce nailed across the subfloor until it spiked his hand securely to the deck. To his credit the kid wasn't frantic or wailing like a baby, probably in shock and worried about what his old man was going to do to him when he found out. :D Just a little bead of blood around the nail head so it was a clean puncture wound but we had to cut away a square foot of subfloor in order to take him to the Emergency at the hospital. Screwed up the rest of the day for the whole crew and we didn't see the kid again until the following year but that's another story. ;)

I don't know what others people's problems are but I do know what mine are and the biggest factor in how I feel inside is how I address those problems internally. If my self talk is negative or bitter or destructive then it reflects poorly on how I feel and how others ultimately perceive me as a person. If I maintain a positive, realistic and creative self talk then it reflects well on my inner happiness and by extension how others can perceive me in a more positive way. Some people are going to hate, be negative or distrustful of me and that's their problem, how I deal with me is my choice so I try to choose the positive route as much as possible. It doesn't always work but it makes thing better in a general way and it opens me to positive people that I would otherwise overlook. Focus on your own happiness and the rest may sort itself out.

Surfpirate comments on May 14, 2018:
Going topless in public has been legal in Ontario, where I live, for a couple of decades now. You don't see a lot of it but it happens, usually at beaches that are out of the way. I'm not a big fan of clothes around the house, especially when it is warm, then I will be wearing the minimum but full public nudity seems problematic for me. If I was younger and single then I might try to work things to my advantage because there is something sexy about a true believer, all that pent up guilt and sin can make for a wild time even if it isn't for a long time.
Where’s your monsters?
Surfpirate comments on May 13, 2018:
For classic monsters I would have to say that I find Lycanthropes the most interesting, vampires seem a bit depressing and the undead are just dullards. Human beings are the real monsters in this world, left to their own devises they are capable of incredible depravity and often that behavior is brought on by their treatment by other lesser, human monsters.
How would you replace religion?
Surfpirate comments on May 13, 2018:
I don't understand why I would want to replace religion with anything, would I replace heroin with crystal meth? I can see that getting rid of religion completely would be a good thing, destroy all signs of it ever having existed would be good and in a few generations people would be free of that oppressive institution, get rid of monarchies as well while we're at it and any other outdated, backward and repressive groups.
So for Mothers Day your Mom wants you to go to church with her.....aaaahgh. Whadda ya say.. do?
Surfpirate comments on May 13, 2018:
My mother would never want me to go to her church with her because she knows I would talk to people and they don't need more empty pews than they already have. ;)
Were you happier as a believer or non-believer?
Surfpirate comments on May 13, 2018:
I suppose belief is a bit like buying life insurance from a fraudulent online insurance scammer, you feel that you have a weight taken off your shoulders and that your future is secure but in reality you are out the premiums and have no real coverage.
I have been thinking a lot about what is not talked about a lot by those of us expressing resistance...

The top 1% have more wealth than the bottom 90% of the US population and the 3 richest Americans, just 3 people, control more wealth than the bottom 50% of Americans. When wealth inequality becomes this great then there will be injustice and if there is no justice then there is no democracy. This cycle continues to destroy the very foundation of democracy and will ultimately lead to dictatorship or revolution, it always has in the past.

Surfpirate comments on May 13, 2018:
THE GOOD - 2009 - At 48 I said enough, retired extra early, went travelling around the world with my wife for 5 years, no regrets at all. THE BAD - 1989 - I went from being a millionaire at 28 to half a million in the hole and bankrupt, my first wife saw that as grounds for divorce, she arranged to have the house burned down for insurance money, I moved 2,000 miles west for work, lost the kids when she moved to the US and remarried - the doctor who did the stress test on me couldn't believe I hadn't had a heart attack when he checked my data sheet

Consuming human blood and flesh in the symbolic form of wine and wafer is just a step away from Cannibalism. Tell her to leave off on consuming the blood and flesh of this Zombie God.

Birth weight 10 lbs. 2 oz. - I already sent 3 dozen tulips (her favourite) and we spoke on the phone yesterday for an hour. Anyone woman who can push out the equivalent of a sack of potatoes deserves my gratitude, not to mention all the good things she taught me in life. Happy Mother's Day to all.

I'm an intellectual snob myself but I never base my snobbery upon degrees - degrees have little to do with intelligence in my experience. I'm reminded of one professor's take on degrees. BS = Bull Shit MS = More Shit PHD = Piled Higher and Deeper The Learning Process is not a process that has an end to it but many people who finish their baccalaureate degree never pick up a book again or seek out further knowledge even though a degree is just a foot in the door to the halls of knowledge. I'm often reminded of the movie The Paper Chase wherein Charles W. Kingsfield Jr. states: 'You teach yourselves the law, but I train your minds. You come in here with a skull full of mush; you leave thinking like a lawyer.'

Surfpirate comments on May 12, 2018:
You know how you don't put an 8' x 4' sign on your front lawn that proudly proclaims: 'I'M AN ATHEIST'. Well for most of the world it's like that too. I have travelled and lived extensively in South America, the Caribbean and Central America, these are areas that have a strong Christian following, mainly Catholic. While many of these Catholic are lapsed and jaded they still don't take kindly to people being Atheist, even Brujas are more accepted, but if you just keep it low key then you should have no problems. There are parts of Africa you should really stay away from, those countries that lump Atheism in with Homosexuality and make it punishable by hard labour, imprisonment or death. Here's a link. https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2013/12/13-countries-where-atheism-punishable-death/355961/

Language is corrupted
Surfpirate comments on May 12, 2018:
Since your question is posed in English, the bastard lingua franca of the world, I would have to say that the English language is a corruption of many languages including itself. English adopts/steals words and expressions from all other languages as it sees fit and is in a constant state of change, that's why Shakespeare would have a very hard time understanding anything by Andrew Lloyd Webber if he should somehow be transported into our present era. Words like Kamikaze, Aloha, Weiner, Vino, Tsunami, Wallaby, Skol, Poutine, Amigo, Geshundeit, etc. etc. are readily recognized by English speakers as English words even though they originated in other languages. Little wonder that English is one of the hardest languages to master, everything about it is butchered, from the words themselves and their spelling (there, their, they're or your, you're and yore- don't worry just memorizes them) to how the sentences are structured. It's a bitch of a language although tonal Mandarin is supposed to be a bit harder to master, that's what my oldest son says and he's a translator for businesses in China.
