How do you answer Pascal’s Wager?
jacpod comments on Apr 24, 2018:
I don't think theres really a need for a rebuttal as whoever is doing the wager is doing it with themselves its their bet, let them get on with it . Thats what life is all about - learning and fun- For me I don't think winning is the part of the game that I play for.
On my way from there to here.
jacpod comments on Apr 24, 2018:
Your post really touched me deeply - I havent ever had this experience as I was growing up in a godless family and not being exposed to the story. I feel lucky to have escaped although you have been exposed to a learning process I have missed . I find it hard to imagine having believed something and then be caught in the process of grieving the loss and not knowing I really hope that you all find that someplace to go

Right now I'm feeling a bit depressed, because I don't work until Thursday.
jacpod comments on Apr 24, 2018:
Slow down sweetie take some deep breaths and know you're strong enough to face what will happen - So many unknowns are hard to deal with for all of us so you're not alone. try to breathe deeply and shrug your shoulders and settle yourself down a bit - made time to do something that you really like doing for yourself whilst the tangle sorts itself out?
Okay.
jacpod comments on Apr 23, 2018:
I dont know because I dont have this dread but I sort of think that if I dont have it then others can 'not have it ' ; like the fear is optional . And if you think about every other person who died were they not scared, maybe because they imagined a better beautiful life after death or were they still scared that they might not get into heaven? I suppose it takes until you decide not to worry about it because its your life that is suffering right now - and death is inevitable for all of us

Is gender equality an issue for atheists?
jacpod comments on Apr 23, 2018:
I think its rather disgusting to find the pay gap for T.V. presenters is so great in favour of men. I dont need anyone to open a door for me I am more than capable thank you. I was a plasterer in a former life and got dogs abuse from men on site who thought that I shouldnt even be there.
Political Hypocrisy
jacpod comments on Apr 23, 2018:
I think because politics is a debate that defines who you are and what you stand for and political elections are key to which side wins if you want equality on the table you vote labour if you want to keep all your offshore accounts intact you vote conservative - It doesnt really matter what we name call each other - what matters is that the system is based on winning and losing and sometimes people win by cheating , (perhaps that should be often rather than sometimes -) so the system is rigged and unfair - and anything so described will call up a lot of emnity for both sides - The division and drama is part of the process in order to get rid of that we would need a much fairer system.
Debating Atheism
jacpod comments on Apr 23, 2018:
some people seem to get off on it as a sort of pastime - I couldnt care less about an absence of soemthing in my life that was never there and I really dont get all the debates about the names used for 'not' being something it feels like picking oakum.
Atheist principles - would atheists be interested in listing basic atheist principles?
jacpod comments on Apr 22, 2018:
I couldnt vote for any of teh above because I think there isnt an option there to just say 'no' and I dont want to agree with the attitude that 'no one tells me what to do.' which sounds belligerant . I dont think that there are or even could be atheist principles mostly because we are all different people we all have our own principles and being without a god is just that - I wouldn't want that book written as it would bring fixity to something that is beautifully (for me ) fluid - My atheism is of very little account to me I dont feel its in any way a part of my life, it is a non starter, so unimportant . I am here to get away from the holy yins. end of!
Death and the massive expense involved with the funeral.
jacpod comments on Apr 22, 2018:
I tried a deal with Queens university Belfast to give them my post mortem body for dissection and learning because they ask for that but the consent forms that came back, on every page ,had disclaimers about how we might not want your body and then we'll give it back your realtives to bury. So not the best deal either.
Is it unreasonable to not want people to call me after I get home from work?
jacpod comments on Apr 22, 2018:
No not a jerk at all just harrassed tired mum, any chance that you could explain that to your friends maybe in a note because the written word is more definite and you can craft it so its not unfriendly - I often find other people don't 'get' my situation and I really have to spell it out to them. Most people do understand after a bit more prompting - like 'remember I told you why I was unable to do that ... ' After a while people tend to get it especially if its done calmly and you hold firm.
What are your thoughts on Faith?
jacpod comments on Apr 22, 2018:
I dont - usually have the word faith in my personal vocabulary and cant remember a time when i actually used it at all except when I had a friend who was saddled with all the names 'Faith Hope Charity Wise.' But what use is Faith ? If you have faith that a chair will bear your weight and then it doesn't and you hurt yourself its the same end result as you not bothering with faith.

Debating Atheism
jacpod comments on Apr 22, 2018:
for me thre is absolutely nothing to debate - if someone asks me my thoughts about religion I will tell them but If they go on to try to debate I will move away - Some people really do try to sucker you in and havethis neediness to talk about it . I dont - its of no importance to me whatsoever and I would resent giving time to stuff like debating then finer details of meanings of words.

How vocal are you about your atheism/agnosticism in the workplace?
jacpod comments on Apr 22, 2018:
I dont but i am retired and have nothing to lose and before I retired I was a mental health advocate and person centred therapist -So without any feelings either way about what people believed or not - Not really my business and if it came up in seminars I never had to speak - just listen and make some comment about the group processes.

Is Tradition worth keeping?
jacpod comments on Apr 21, 2018:
I dont have many traditions, dont do christmas /easter/ adn at the moment I am questioning and evaluating and throwing out things "I 'should' be doing " because I want a change in my life - that reflects what being 70 y.o is all about - I have people in my housing scheme who talk to me as if I were a child - and I am blatantly ignoring them - I wont speak any more to anybody who puts me down .. there was a tenant here who violently attacked me in the last 7 months and so I am re writing my rule book.
Do you feel happier after you’ve exercised?
jacpod comments on Apr 21, 2018:
the exercise I get is gentle walking the beach - just 4 minutes away or walking up the town - quite a few hills - when I first came here we walked up every mountain in Northern Ireland and a fair few in the South I also did the causeway walk most days; but now my hips are beginning to give me gyp and its quite nice to be easy - there is an outdoor fitness centre at the beach but a lot of the machines squeak and sound awful.

Atheism and socialization
jacpod comments on Apr 20, 2018:
No - I dont think about other peoples views much as I am on my own program and they are on theirs if people talk about god to me I listen for them to understand them as far as I am able. So I dont think my atheism is any big shock to them - Someoen once did say oh that is an awful shame when I said I didnt have a god - and I rather thought it was sweetly naiive.

Regarding my post about "normal" ([agnostic.
jacpod comments on Apr 20, 2018:
I dont feel normal at all & I dont really care - I like who I am and what I do and how I think and I dont want to suffer fools gladly so I dont . before I was sort of humble and let people put me down and gave way a lot as if I am only here on sufferance but now I have changed and i have an anger in me that is definitely about wanting a change. I stopped letting people talk down to me . And I feel completely in charge of any negotiations. At the beginning i needed big anger to get me in gear but after that I just went my own way and I do as I want.

What is your "normal"?
jacpod comments on Apr 20, 2018:
Okay heres the rant about it Up until I reached 70y.o I was a pushover would do anything for anybody any time It was in the run up to my birthday that I began to feel that my life had been a series of abuses - being taken for granted etc. there is a man in my housing scheme who was always telling me off like a little girl - and I have D.I.D so that isnt great for me to have to deal with someone calling up an alter . I have stopped speaking to him completely now , also he shouts and drinks a lot two more of my triggers- I used ot get his papers for him every day ;now I dont and I dont go near him - there is another man in my housing scheme who attacked me - the police came and gave him an order but he still swans around acting weirdly. And so many people who take advantage of your good nature and bore you with tales about how they do your make up and hair when they can see you dont use make up or bother about hair or clothes. I think that I might just start acting up a bit myself so that they leave me alone.

The ones that I have met have seemed very vulnerable to me - I always let them in because it seems the right thing to do, but it always seems to me that they have a neediness beyond anything I am able to offer - This isnt meant in any bad way at all and possibly they have a harder time here in Northern Ireland where its nearly all catholic or protestant . I met a born again christian at a seminar and she too was vulnerable so maybe its just here being cliquey. I am not from N.I. ; originally London then all over the U.K so I get the same treatment - I'm irrelevant too but dont mind .

For those who consider themselves "free thinkers" what makes you feel that your thinking is free as ...
jacpod comments on Apr 19, 2018:
I never thought of it that way before so thanks for the option to think about it. I think there are some of us that were never in any convention long enough to be subscribers/brought into a fold /whatever.... And undoubtedly some people are original thinkers because we can see that new ideals ideas and things are coming into being all the time- I have a personal story about my grandfather who was the Technician at the fuel research station in greenwich when the atom was split for the first time. He also invented the first gas poker - so 'new' is always with us and someone is thinking how to make things happen - (not me) but people with imagination do come up with ideas and try to put them inot practise.
Does this point of view seem rational? does it offend you?
jacpod comments on Apr 18, 2018:
Irrational but not offensive; people act, say, feel and think exactly what they are conditioned to by their interest group.- its what 'belonging is all about ' upholding the group psyche. There are conflicts everywhere that there are people who 'need' to hold biased views in order to stay with their group of comfort - Others of us who are used to not belonging, not fitting in easily, get to be freer but at a price too. Its just how humanity comes.

jacpod comments on Apr 17, 2018:
There was a story I think it was Schopenhauer, about a policeman who saw a man about to throw himself off tower bridge and into the Thames - In that decisive moment he saw that he would not be human if he did not attempt to rescue the man .They both survived . When I was living in hte lake district there was a school sports day after the rushbearing walk beating the bounds; and then gingerbread and ginger beer; the last part of the sports day post races etc. was a race up and down the nearby Fell . My partner and I climbed up it first in order to cheer the children on - one boy had asthma and wasnt supposed to run and he collapsed at the top I picked him up and walked down with him in my arms he was a heavy lad but I couldnt let go; even when help appeared; I couldnt hand him over it was as if I was in an altered state and could only hang on in there. When the rescuers talked to me I came out of that state but I think there is an element of altruism in all of us that can be tapped into.
Being offended: What does it REALLY mean?
jacpod comments on Apr 17, 2018:
Interesting - I get your argument and its sound; and I still feel there are times when I want to be offended and make a deal of it, say if a big man was spitting near me and I couldnt take him on because I am only five feet and one inch. The only place I can go to is frustrated/offended. And I do seriously think some guys get a kick out of being offensive especially in rude remarks to women about our appearance , or being called 'a dog'. yes I think I come down on the side of its my right to feel offended and if you dont like it - you seem to be saying you will lump it - Good, good on you!

Is it hypocritical for me, as an atheist, to celebrate religious holidays?
jacpod comments on Apr 17, 2018:
I dont think its hypocritical if you know what you are doing and why. I wouldnt hesitate to support any of my family in anything htey wanted to do because Its just a meeting of friendship and we all have so many different ways of showing our love and understanding. i think there is a core set of values within me that I adhere to and as long as I am not required to break them I feel Okay, I dont have to buy into the meanings of what I am doing I am onnly required to be part of hte ritual - Its Ok .
