I met a gay couple who seem made for each other:
Gerald Fitzpatrick and Patrick Fitzgerald
They were Irish.
Excepting that the use of the prefix 'Fitz' dates back to the Norman invasion of Ireland not many decades after 1066 - again pointing to the other wonderful bit of spin doctoring of blaming the English for Irish occupation. Fitz is a Norman French word signifying "son of".
Certainly in the cases above the surnames are from Irish Gaelic however these days that may have more English or Scottish blood than Irish.
