In a libertarian society who decides the validity of geographical property claims?
davknight comments on Feb 28, 2019:
Towards the end of the Revolutionary War, many people were staking out 'tomahawk claims' on wilderness land in southwest Pennsylvania.( A tomahawk claim was where you just cut notches in trees, to mark out your boundary lines). This was fairly common up and down the frontier line. But this particular land was "owned" by absentee landowners farther east. About five years after the war ended, the absentee landowners attempted to kick all the 'squatters' off the land. Many landowners' representatives ended up being tarred, feathered, and run out to the nearest county line on a rail Then President,George Washington had Alexander Hamilton raise a body of 5,000 Federal troops and State Militia to 'restore order'. This became known as the 'Whiskey Rebellion'. But what is generally not known is that it had nothing to do with taxes on Whiskey-making. Rather, it was a case of wealthy land speculators moving in, and evicting settlers from land they had already improved upon, by building cabins, and putting in crops. (Many of these settlers incidentally, were Continental Army veterans). Tomahawk claimants in Kentucky and Tennessee were luckier. They were much farther removed from the reaches of the Federal government. So, if you're gonna mark out a tomahawk claim of your own, you might consider some uninhabited island somewhere, and go completely off the grid!

How many of you have had Shingles?
davknight comments on Feb 26, 2019:
'Shingles' refers to 'fugitive' chicken pox virus, that hides out in your spinal column, not to re-emerge until you are middle-aged. This is why it tends to radiate outwards from the spinal column. Scratch it, and the pus beneath the scabs spreads further on your body, like the arms, the hands, the head and face. Anybody who had chicken pox as a kid is a prime candidate for shingles when they get older.

A new study says that all men, regardless of age, will always be attracted to women in their 20's ...
davknight comments on Feb 26, 2019:
Girls learn how to walk before boys, talk before boys, and mature before boys. So they tend to be attracted to 'older men', rather than boys the same age or younger. Boys discover that girls younger than they are , are attracted to them. So, their first sexual experiences tend to be with younger girls. It all has to do with the female maturing faster than the male. It's all biology! Nothing new here. But I wonder how much money they wasted on this study?

All you have to do, is watch the monkeys at the zoo. When the female monkeys are in estrus, their rear ends swell, and glow red. When the male monkeys see that, they sneak up behind em, and 'connect'. It is easy to speculate a Homo Sapiens Sapiens, or Early Homo, doing that to a Neanderthal female. Or a Neanderthal male doing that to a Homo Sapiens Sapiens female.

He laughed, and said "Of course not! You will look THROUGH them instead!". In addition, I once spent most of a summer excavating, and sorting bones from a bison kill site in northern Colorado. At one point, when observing pedestrians on the street, I could "see" through their flesh, and body fat, and "see" their skeletons walking down the street! Religion is a leash for untamed humans. Well just my thought.
davknight comments on Feb 20, 2019:
I think what you mean is, religion can play a 'functionalist' role in society, by erecting moral boundaries, e.g., "Thou shalt not do mean stuff". Sociologists refer to that as 'functionalism', which is where a feature of a given culture provides a useful role. But many things, other than religion, can perform a useful purpose. For example, once upon a time in America, every small town had a brothel, or two. And when a farm boy turned 13, his pappy took him to a 'sportin parlor', to learn about the birds n bees. This prepared him for his wedding night, years later. Unfortunately, a town cannot remain half-Methodist, and half-sinfulness n damnation. And as the towns grew, the brothels got closed down.

And people in all countries are conditioned from childhood to view the State as a parental figure, e.g. the 'Fatherland', the 'Mother Land',etc. And any external criticism of 'Mommy' tends to bring out a hostile reaction.

Cleaning up after humans. See a harpoon skewer space junk in orbit [cnn.com]
davknight comments on Feb 16, 2019:
Space junk is a big problem. As of 2000, there were an estimated 250,000 pieces of space junk in orbit around the Earth. Most space junk is in the form of nuts, bolts, wrenches, etc. But some of it is in the form of larger pieces of metal. All of it is dangerous to space craft and satellites. Keep in mind everything in orbit travels at 18,000 miles per hour. The bigger problem is how to get rid of it. One design, still on the drawing board, is for an orbiting 'vacuum cleaner', that will 'collect' it. But that's still tears away from being tested.
