An interesting film that differs slightly from the book. You recall the scientist character played by Fred Astaire. In the film he kills himself by running his race car in the garage and inhaling the fumes. The book has him putting it on blocks and leaving the wheels off. This is so the when they go flat the weight of the car wont ruin them. Then he takes out the plugs and pours oil into the heads so it will not seize. The bodywork is given 3 coats of wax which is not removed. In other words he preserves the car so that who or whatever might find it, will be able to enjoy it. Only then does he take a pill to end his life. The hope of hope in this action adds so much more the the poignancy of the situation. May I also recommend "A Town like Alice" (Also by Nevil Shute) Made into a film with Peter Finch and Virginia McKenna in 1951. This is abridged (although they did a mini series in 1981 which was more complete). It has a great hero, strong, courageous and caring but it is the female heroine that is the most interesting. A forerunner of feminism. It is her strength that he falls for.

I crashed out till at 8pm when another friend who had no smokes came and said "If you have tobacco I have 2 ecstasy tabs and we can go see Tommys gig" so.....New years was brought in in a strange pub then we walked to our local wine bar. That was buzzing with people (inc me) standing on chairs dancing till 4am. Then back to mine with about half a dozen musicians and assortment of oddballs till 6.30 am. it would be very easy for me or any others on here to give glib advice such as "go for it". However we are not you and you seem to be quite shy and reticent. As someone who has struggled with this in the past all I can say is have you considered assertiveness training? This may not have to be a full on course? Perhaps just a self help book or two might be worth reading. Do your like how you are at the moment? Would you like to more in control of your life? There are learnable skills that can help you with this. I would seriously recommend them for consideration.

I get what your saying and its not fair. You might be a great guy but not that good at online chat ups. Well big surprise life is not fair. The problem is numbers. I youre a woman on a dating site your gonna get tons of "hellos". Loads "Hi I think youre cute/hot etc. Just like the posts on here you will look though and respond only to something that engages you. If you meet someone irl in a social or work setting. Would would spend some time finding out a, Are they single? b, Are they looking? c,What are they into? This is fast forwarded online and you already have your answers. You could waste a long time lusting after a woman at work only to find out that she has a bf and is into christian rock! So lets look at how you can use that to your advantage. Okay the big 1st three questions are answered. So next are you into them? Again this is a numbers game so you weed out all those that are non-starters. A brief look at your profile says to me you like independent left leaning politically aware women. So after the age, distance, smoker etc. lets rule out theist, girly girl and 45ers. That will give you about 5 or 6 prospects. First message should be about their profile. If you met at a gig or at work you would have the band or the boss to talk about but online they have already given you your cue. This is a learnable skill. For example (forgive me AnneWimsey I will use you here). "Hello AnneWimsey, I read your profile and would like to get to know you. It must be great having the freedom and independence an RV gives you? I sing karaoke too whats your favorite song?". This will tell her 2 things. a, You have taken the time to read her profile and not just look at her pic. b, That you are making an informed choice to send her a message that is personal and inquiring. Now if she responds will depend on whether or not she likes what she sees in your profile but I will say that a msg like that will at least get them to look.

I have very catholic tastes in music but I seem to go for singer songwriter the most. Be that country, folk or whatever. It would be easier to list what I dont like. Which is stadium pussy rock a la Aerosmith, Guns and Roses etc. bad right wing c/w, autotune vocals and covers that bring nothing to the party. Music can be a question of time and place. I doubt if anyone here would say that they like fairground organ music. Yet I spent a day a few years back in Blackpool fairground. We all sat drinking and chatting whilst the kids explored the park. (yes they had an adult with them). The wurlitzer tunes playing was just perfect. I would never have put this on my stereo at home but it was just right at that moment in time.

I was 14, dad had said "Youre too old for toys now". Which translated that he was too mean to buy any. Not that it would stop him from spending all his loose cash down the pub. My big brother John was 20 and on christmas morning I work up to a huge present from him. It was a pistol range about 3 feet long and used mechanical linkages to put pin holes in a target. (I am not into guns now but then Im not 14 anymore). I played with that toy so much I even made my own targets when the original ones wore out. It also showed how things were going to be. Dad left us 2 years later and mostly it been just John and me. We both have had our families and now live on our own. This christmas is unusual. Normally we would have a big family one but his ex is over and we were both going to give the day a miss this year. So I phoned him today and invited him round to mine. It will be simple. I will cook and we will drink and talk, maybe watch a daft movie or too. Just him and me like the old days.

I am not sure that this is wrong. I used to go to grunge clubs in the 90s and there was a whole Kurt Cobain adoration thing going on. I used to tell them that Kurt was a dick head because we were there enjoying a drink and he was not.
