Much of the playability of a guitar is in the set up. My best guitar was an old Yamaha circa 1970. Not quite as beat up as Willie Nelsons but close. It was however set up perfectly. My friend is a great amateur luthier. His festival guitar is a Kay. The action on it is great so its not the quality of the instrument more the quality of its set up. Whatever guitar you buy, keep some money back to have the frets stoned down, nut and bridge saddle lowered and trust rod adjusted. You can learn how to do this yourself online but I recommend that you try with a cheap one first. Two of the problems you mentioned in your post could be solved by yourself. Change the machine heads and tuning will be better. Use a straight edge (a builders level is good for this) and check if the neck is bent. Then adjust the trust rod accordingly. Buy a few saddles and nuts online. They are quite cheap and it best to have more than one in case you over reduce. Then file down the saddle and nut to bring down the action. (I use a belt sander in a vice to take off the big then file off to the line). A lot of this is trial and error hence its good to have spares This will not harm your guitar and if it improves the action will at least give you a better trade in price. Btw a good tip when reducing the saddle to put a capo on the neck. Then detune till you can pull out the bridge pins and strings. This will mean that you dont have to rewind the strings back onto the heads when you have put the saddle back. I hope this helps and remember this. If you buy a brand new Steinway piano for about $150,000. It will be a day away from being playable. You have to get someone to set it up first!
