Bullies---TIME'S UP Workplace drama - Day 2 A young lady from the new hire class walked out ...
273kelvin comments on Jan 30, 2018:
My daughter was being bullied at school at 13 yrs of age. I had to give the most practical advice that I could. Of course she had all the usual stuff like tell the teacher etc.She lived with her mum so I could not be there for har all the time. My advice was this, they way to stop bulling is friends. The more friends you have the more there will leave you alone. If you have not got any friends then look for the next one they pick on and stick up for them. I told her about my school days and fighting two guys at once because they were bulling my mate. I beat them because they were cowards.

There is a part in hitchhikers guide where Arthur Dent finds out that earth is a giant bio computer and says that he has always had the feeling that he was part of some matrix. Then Ford Prefect tells him that that`s just paranoia, common to most of the galaxy. Firstly, we have to go back to Descarte " I think therefore I am ". If we are part of a matrix what of our thoughts? The ones we have before we act, type or move. Secondly, the idea of a game programer/s is too close to a god for my liking. Third, the buddhist concept of the world as an illusion is not something that I can take. It would mean that the bombs the fell on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the holocaust and 9/11 did not really happen. That is something I personally cannot agree with.

Is there a UNIVERSAL morality?
273kelvin comments on Jan 28, 2018:
I hate to say this but history tells us that morality is very much a shifting sand. What is morally abohant in one generation can be perfectly acceptable to an other and vice versa. Take for example language. You may use the " F " word quite freely now. I even heard it used in the new star trek netflix production. However it is not acceptable to use the " N " word. The age of consent can vary from generation or even US states. I was shocked to discover that my maternal grandmother was married at 12! Slavery was perfectly moral 200 years ago, homosexuality is still seen by some as immoral but the tide is turning. Yet in ancient Greece or Rome it assumed that you were at least bi. In Spata it was compulsory. Yet when Oscar Wilde was sentenced the judge said that it was the worst case he had ever tried and his previous case had been a child murderer. Who knows maybe future generations will look at us as inhumane bastards for eating meat or owning pets?
Intelligent Design.
273kelvin comments on Jan 27, 2018:
Compertition and greed are our evolutionary raison d'être. It is the selfish gene with intelligence. Many people have expounded this idea of logical systems of govt from Socrates to Marx. They do not work. Many reasons have been attributed to this, Maxists will say it was the implementation and personality cult etc. but it is simply top down systems are shite. Okay you`re planning a trip. Do you want to go to a planned city or one that just grew? Rio or Brazzaville? Manchester or Milton Keynes? Sydney or Canberra? Then you are told that you cannot go to some of these places unless you go by sailing ship because of the carbon footprint !
Guess what time it is?

273kelvin comments on Jan 26, 2018:
An interesting question. I think it is directly proportional to the decline of a relationship. By which at the start we all open car doors (and she does not fart). By the end she is thankful if you take car out of gear. Case in point, my last really long term one. At the start I would readily roll her a smoke when we drank (which was quite often). After a while this grew increasingly more irksome, especially as the evening wore on and the requests would turn into more frequent demands. Not only had I to make them but also light them. As she talked she would forget about said smoke and I would have to relight it too . This meant drop what your doing/talking about etc. and do it. Eventually I went on strike and would only provide this service when she was totally incapable. PS. I smoke a pipe.

This has become more of an issue in modern times with the rights of adopted people to find their biological family. Apparently There is a 25% chance of sexual attraction in the case of each individual. Doing the maths that means that 6.25% of the times it will be mutual.
Television- The great bullshitter
273kelvin comments on Jan 26, 2018:
I watch very little myself, it is too sophoritic (good for insomnia). Firstly I think your friends were quite rude, whenever people come to mine it goes off. Next time you are in this situation walk up to the TV and say " How does this work? " Then switch it off. If they protest too much politely threaten to leave and besides everything is available on endless catch up anyway. This will cause a stir at first but if you keep doing it, they will get used to it. Furthermore you will gain a reputation as a bohemian eccentric, conversationalist and explorer of music collections. As I type I am following a thread on here about atheist TV characters. This was from the 80`s and an adaptation of Monsignor Quixote by Graham Greene. On TV it was Alex Guinness and Leo McKern but I am listening to a radio version (this is why we pay for TV licences it part funds the BBC).
Can you guys give me some feedback on athiest churches?

273kelvin comments on Jan 25, 2018:
I remember not too many years ago there was an interview with Micky Rooney on UK TV. He had come here as he had for many years to star in a pantomime. For our American friends, a panto is put on at Christmas and is a fairytale story like Cinderella for kids and adults. There is a lot of good natured cross dressing. Prince Charming will by a fit looking woman in thigh length boots and tights and the ugly sisters some fat middle aged comedians. So there is Micky Rooney, by this time in his 80s. with his upteenth wife being asked why has he traveled all the way to England to do panto in Leeds. " Because they don`t do pantomimes in America! ".

273kelvin comments on Jan 25, 2018:
Sometimes I believe in luck. One particular time springs to mind. It was the solar eclipse in 1999. My friend was fanatical to see it but his partner could not get time off to travel to Germany (the best chance). My brother agreed to drive him as he could not drive. Well anyway after about 2 days in a small compact car (my bro is a large 6er) they get to the top of this hill and all they can see is clouds. It is about an hour before the event and it looks like theyve come all this was for nothing. People are leaving or listening to car radios, wondering what to do. My brother says " See that guy over there. He looks like a winner ". Now the guy was a living advertisement for his car (a brand new Mercedes), two lovely kids and a beautiful wife. My bro says " anywhere is as good as anywhere else to try and see this thing. Lets follow the guy who looks like hes lucky! ". Wouldnt yer know it they drive behind this chap to the top of another hill and it was the only place in the region that a lucky break in the clouds.
What is the significance of a date?
273kelvin comments on Jan 25, 2018:
There has been moves in England to make St George`s day 23rd April (also Shakespeare's birthday) a bank holiday. It is unlikely to happen even though all the other counties in the united kingdom have theirs eg. St David. Firstly because successive govts are too stingy to give us an extra day off and also because a curious form of reverse cultural snobbery. English is and remains the dominant language of the world. Sports from England are still the most played etc. Plus there is a collective guilt regarding the legacy of empire. Right wing newspapers regularly print stories of local authorities banning national flag displays. These are always found to be fake news but they have a ring of truth to them that makes them believable. People rarely fly the flag unless it is for those extremely brief moments before England exits the world cup. It simply is not the done thing.
Hey, non-believers. Has anyone here ever lied about a religious affiliation to get a perk?

Women, does he really need to know?
273kelvin comments on Jan 24, 2018:
A mute point withe us guys. A woman can choose to keep the child or not. Now as much as I support the women's right to do so, with the exception of rape I think the father should be informed. As it stands if a woman wants the child, the guy is on the hook for up to 21 years. Irrespective of the circumstances. Whether they be statutory rape (on her part), or if she loads up a turkey baster from her mouth/condom. It makes no odds. Similarly if she terminates he has no say. He could be the last of the mohicans or heir to some Scottish clan. There may be other circumstances that might inform her decision too. Like genetic disorders or he could have a very low sperm count and this might be his only chance of kids. It takes two to tango. Two should know.

Black and White Films
273kelvin comments on Jan 24, 2018:
FILMS ARE THE LAND OF DREAMS..... and most people dream in monochrome It is also what you would see he world as if you were experiencing a trauma such as a road accident. Your brain shuts down the colour. Just as you would shut down other sites so as to increase your data flow when streaming online. This could mean that we store our memories in black and white? However it would most definitely say that our most traumatic or intense memories are. Films like Psycho mainline into flight fight response. If you were really being stabbed to death in the shower, that is how you would actually see it. Consequently part of us is programed to associate monochrome with intense emotions. It can take us to the places where we don`t really want to go. Schindler's List illustrates this perfectly by giving us those two small touches of colour. The first to dash our hopes and then the second give it back. " A matter of life and death " uses technicolor and monochrome to differentiate between heaven and earth. It has a grunginess to it. Added to the fact that it is cheaper to film (film not video). So young turks in film making could more easily get their films made. Like " Clerks " or " Rebel without a cause ". All the is a defence of the genre. It could be an age thing? My daughter (21) is the same but maybe your just not into film the way your dates are? Because if you dig films you have to dig black and white ones, end of.
What is yourt favorite book?
273kelvin comments on Jan 24, 2018:
I tend to hate "whats your favorite? " Type of questions. It like picking your favorite colour. I love the reds of a sunset, the browns and golds of autumn the pink of a child's cheek in winter or the blue of the mediterranean. Whats my favorite book Ive given to someone? narrows it down a little. "Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance" I have given away about 3 times. But my favorite gift was to a professional blues man. He has been going for about 4 decades. "Joey Shields and the wheels" (you can youtube him). Of course one of his numbers is "Rout 66". So I asked him if he read "The grapes of wrath". It was such a delight to find an unread hardback book club copy in a charity shop. "it`s Woody Guthrie" he said after he read it.

Age. Does it come to one defining moment when you realize you have gotten older?
273kelvin comments on Jan 23, 2018:
Wilde famously said " youth is wasted on the young ". My daughter asked me " when do you grow up?" I jokingly replied "I will tell you when it happens!" Seriously, I then said it was a gradual process, with a few milestones along the way. The first time your parents let you have a key to the house, The 1st time you have sex,1st time you leave home. Learning to drive, having kids etc. As we travel along we add keys to our key ring. Sometimes we shed a few but they attach and grow like barnacles. As for my face? Well I never liked it, I never really thought it was me staring back as I shave. Now if I take a razor and scissors and remove all my unwanted hair from my nose, ears upper cheeks and eyebrows. I can a least effect a look of "salty old dog" or surfing Gandalf. One thing I do like about my self now (and this may sound odd) is a lessening of my sex drive. Don`t get me wrong it is still there, just less loud. I often say "I do not think with my penus but it has voting rights". Nowadays it most certainly a minority party. Looking back in hindsight at all the disastrous decisions he made...One of the great things about being older is you get to hang around with young people of the opposite sex without the tension. I brought the new year in with four ravenously beautiful young women. The $64,000 question is though. Are you still up for a great love affair? I can only say "you betcha".

How many people have still not worked out why Hillary lost?
273kelvin comments on Jan 22, 2018:
A lot of reasons, from this side of the pond it seemed that Trump was saying "I will make America great again" and she was saying "It`s my turn". There also seems to be a backlash against "boy band" politicians. We are getting it in France with Le Penn. In the UK with Corbyn and brexit. People a sick of candidates that are so scared of saying the wrong thing, they say nothing at all. The Democrats picked one of the most hated politicians they could pick. If they had gone with Sanders, he could have stayed at home with his grandchildren and still have won. People hate the word "should". You should stop smoking, you should exercise more. you should watch what you eat, you should go to church on Sunday etc. It pisses folks off and Hillary was a "you should vote for me" candidate Trump was not.

273kelvin comments on Jan 22, 2018:
Sorry my American cousins but one of the main problems is the presidential system. It has to be the worst export your country has ever sent. I cannot think of anywhere (except the USA) where it has worked. As for democracy itself, be careful what you wish for. We would all want to have some checks and balances to avoid mob rule plus people a stupid. Yes we are, when the tax rebate comes in do we go for paying a little more off the mortgage or a vacation? We want low taxes and more public spending. Socrates posed the question " Who should govern the ship. The captain or the crew?" I say look at an actual event ie. the Bounty mutiny and see how it turned out. The main benefits that we get from our sudo-democracies are sites like this and a free press. Without the facade of the vote things like these would disappear. https://youtu.be/VEDSRP3yNPo

Just to be looked after like he was in the navy.

273kelvin comments on Jan 21, 2018:
I think that we would all be rather irritating and boring if we still had the all opinions of our youth. I grew up in a blue collar neighborhood. A lot of my opinions were wrong. I am glad that I ditched them. One thing that is quite frivolous but nevertheless proved how open minded I still am. Was when I watched the documentary "thriller in Manila". It was Joe Frazier's point of view of his encounters with Mohamed Ali. As a youth I saw Ali as the hero of their exchanges. However seeing it from the other side changed my opinion. This is something that freaks me a little about our times. When I was growing up science was the way forward. Nuclear power was offered as clean cheap energy, plastics were good things, medical science was moving in leaps and bounds with transplants etc. Empirical reason had it all, evolution was a done deal. The Scopes trial was old very news and fundamental religions were fastly becoming quaint old relics. Now it is very different. We are in a position of the vast majority scientists saying that we are f#cked unless we do something about emissions and we have to scream to be heard. Parents are not vaccinating their kids and no one trusts GM crops. What makes it even more scary is the alt Christian right being allowed anywhere near power. These guys want the world to end! They actively work towards Armageddon and end of days. This is like the co-pilot of your 747 being on suicide watch. And those idiots are pussies compared to ISIS. When did scientific reason become a belief system?

As for us guys well what can I say show up and your nearly there. Case in point I ended up with a one night stand a few years ago, with a full on butch dyke. Yeah she was good looking but no makeup. In the Uk we have the church embedded in our state. However this the church of England and it is often seen as an inoculation against religion. The queen is titular head of said church, many state schools are C of E and their bishops sit in the house of lords (a non-elected version of the senate). Although they have spoken out and voted on matters like abortion etc. They often side with the left on things like welfare. It does not seem to coarse the same problems as it does in the US as most of the UK is secular. (only 2% attend C of E churches regularly) and minorities are generally protected by the British sense of fair play and love of the underdog.

For atheists - what makes you believe no deity exists?
273kelvin comments on Jan 15, 2018:
There either is or is not a god. If you believe there is you believe that you will be granted eternal life (assuming you pick the right church and good luck on that lottery). If you believe that there isnt. Then you can just get on with your life. If you refuse to make that call you have lost. Let me put it this way. About 22 years ago I visited Jerusalem. A odd place for an atheist but I was there. Now for the most part it was peaceful (then) probably due to massive amounts of security. However all the different religions kept to themselves. Coptic, Catholic, Orthodox Greek, Russian. Muslim Shea, Sunni. All seemed to say the same thing "you are one of us or your not". Right in the middle was the dome of the rock where Muslims believe Abraham was going to sacrifice Issac. That was the tone of the place. From what I hear you are nobody in Chicago till you`ve had someone rubbed out. Well your nobody in Jerusalem till you`ve put a kid on an altar. God botherers talk of love but give us death. Hypothetically if god existed, then all those people that prayed to him might get an answer saying "don't kill or hurt people". For atheists - what makes you believe no deity exists?
273kelvin comments on Jan 14, 2018:
I am not asking for a miracle, no parting of seas or burning bushes just "play nice"......silence, nothing, zilch. So even if and that`s a f*ckin big IF he does exist? what bloody use is he? Worse than than that ask yourself this. Would those guys have flew into the twin towers on 9/11 if the concept of an afterlife did not exist. I leave with one lasting memory of that trip. Couterapologetics: what's your favorite angle of approach?
273kelvin comments on Jan 14, 2018:
It is also a good argument against Pascal`s wager. Briefly the bet goes like this, you bet your life on the existence or not of god a or b, yes or no,Y or N. If aY then you get eternal life. If aN you don`t get eternity. If bY then all you have lost a few pleasures. If bN then all you have gained is those aforementioned pleasures. Where this logic breaks down is the list of just 2 choices a or b. Whereas the choice of a (there is a god) is like saying "I shall buy a tin of food". What tin? Which food? What make? Choose the wrong one and it is as bad as not buying one at all. BTW if you go agnostic you lose 100% of the time.
What do you tell very young children when they ask if you believe in God?
273kelvin comments on Jan 14, 2018:
I heard the story of Issac in Sunday school and when I came home I asked my dad if he believed in god. I was so relieved when he said no. Later on he explained why but that`s another story. With my kids I was just honest. This is what I think but it does not have to be what you think.

I dont believe in turning the other cheek. as it gives rights to people who should not have them. That said, it depends on the hurt given to you. I tend to go with Kipling on this. "....being lied about dont deal in lies. Or Being hated don`t give way to hating. Nor look too good or talk too wise". PS. it was if not written by the Romans they were it`s demographic.
Here is the example that helped me to realize my beliefs on confederate monuments.

I do not maintain it is accurate or rules to live by ffs would I be here if I was? What I am asking is it worth looking at for information of those times? I doubt if any historical records are particularly accurate or without bios even about more recent events such as the Alamo or Boston tea party. Imagine if the only record future historians had to go on was Fox news?

An old and a young native American were found trespassing near a NASA installation. When questioned the young man explains "This is my grandfather, he was showing me our old hunting grounds. I am sorry but I will have to speak for him as he does not speak English". They invite the two men into the installation and explain that they are sending out a space probe that will explore the solar system, then go on into deep space. "Would your grandfather like to record something for other beings that might be out there?" The old man nods and says something into the microphone. The young man laughs. "What did he say" they ask. "It does not translate". So they take the recording to a bar where they ask another native American what it says. He laughs too but says "It does not translate". Eventually they take it to a professor of native American studies at Princeton to translate and he tells them it says "Watch out they`re after your land".

In the UK the only subject inscribed by law is RE. Although core subjects like the 3 R`s are part of the core curriculum. In the 60`s, we would have to attend morning assembly. A sermon and hymns were delivered and led by a member of staff. It was an inoculation against religion and a good argument against antidisestablishmentarianism.
Worst movie ever made?
273kelvin comments on Jan 13, 2018:
"The Fugitive" 1947 I choose this film not so much for its awfulness (although its pretty bad) but for it being made at all. Let me explain. In 1940 the English writer Graham Greene published a novel called "The Power and the Glory". It centers around Mexicos persecution of Catholicism in the 1930s. In it, the state makes it compulsory for all priests to marry or leave the country. It provides a good pension for those that stay, so there would no difficulty in them finding a wife. One priest decides to go underground. He is not a likable character, a whiskey priest with no faith left and a child to boot. He is pursued by a very likable policeman, who even gives the priest some money when he thinks he`a just a drunk. The book was banned by the church and Greene (a convert to Catholicism) hauled over the coals. Anyway back to the film in 1947 John Ford directs this blatant piece of propaganda (a word coined by Jesuits "for the propagation of the faith" ) With Henry Fonda as priest and a villainesque policeman. It is one of the worst things to come out of Hollywood.

I do not live in the US so I`ve no dog in this fight but it does seem bizarre that can own a gun but not play online poker. Some of the most rabid pro gun people I have come across online (not here). Are the very same type of idiots that would not trust with a knife and fork without close supervision. They seem to lack any form of compassion for the victims and are only concerned about "their" rights. I suppose it is a case of my favorite political/governmental joke. A man stops his car in rural Ireland and asks an old guy "Can you tell me how to get to Cork?" "Well if I were you , I would not have started from here".

Why does it seam cultural believers get a free pass?
273kelvin comments on Jan 11, 2018:
You presuppose that they are not all cultural believers. Take a look at the map of religions. If you are born into a Presbyterian family then it`s 99% certain that if you are religious then that`s the one it will be. The same as Baptist, Catholic, Mormon or Muslim. Yes some do convert but how many ex Lutheran`s do you know that have become Coptic or Greek orthodox? It is just as cultural as which sports team you support. I heard Richard Dawkins explain this in a TV Christmas lecture (I sh*t you not it was brilliant) to a whole load of kids. Religion is a mind virus because of it`s geographical clusters. Unlike science which although there may be differences of opinion amongst scientists does not adhere to cultural or geographical bios.

Boyfriend is agnostic, I'm an atheist. How to cope with disagreements?
273kelvin comments on Jan 11, 2018:
I think that a lot of you may have missed something fundamental here. Some people will argue about anything! I am reminded of a bit in a Woody Allen film where his parents are arguing "What do you mean, the Atlantic is a better ocean than the Pacific". You say you live in the bible belt, so I suppose all his family, friends and work colleagues are Christian and if I know those guys they are on his case all the time. You are the only person he can discuss his non-belief with. I will bet you better than even money that when he talks to them, he uses your arguments against them. You could try this if it gets too much. "There either is a god or there is not a god? If you pick one or the other you have a chance of being right or wrong. If you pick neither you have a 100% chance of being wrong. This is not Schrödinger's cat, now I am bored so lets have sex" (or any other activity you would rather the both of you were doing).
Do you feel it is necessary to be anti religious groups of people to be agnostic or atheist?
273kelvin comments on Jan 11, 2018:
I personally hold nothing against anyone who practices a faith. I work as a carpenter and visit homes of all different people. Christians , Muslims priests, vicars and I even put a swastika up the other day (it was Hindu). I do have a problem with faith schools that deny evolution, high street bible thumpers who call me (and everyone else) evil because we are not them and religious groups who try and influence laws to suit their own doctrinal agenda.

273kelvin comments on Jan 10, 2018:
It hurts to say this but I have to go with the numbers. According to people who really know, ie the ones who make book on it, It`s women. There was an insurance company in the UK offering lower rates for women called Sheila`s wheels. Unfortunately it was told that this was discriminatory. As I told my daughter and her friends "the biggest killer of young women between 18 and 21 is their boyfriends driving",
