@Pralina1 I don't think more regulations are the answer, it's all too easy for people to simply ignore the laws. Look at drunk driving for example, look at all the laws on the books against driving under the influence, yet each year thousands are killed when someone gets behind the wheel while under the influence. I know most people probably wouldn't want to hear this, but I strongly think there isn't much we can do once certain things have been created that of which could cause harm or death to human beings, once something is created you can't simply uncreate it. It is a truly complex problem in which there are no simplistic solutions. On a side note, I commend you for believing responsible people should be free to own what they want as long as they are not impeding another's existence, I respect that, live and let live.

SpikeTalon replies on Dec 7, 2021:
@Rignor I wasn't knocking you for giving an honest opinion, all I was saying though is that I wasn't surprised to read the points you made is all. I agree on that part, but based on what I've observed over the years experts are more often than not consulted prior to making such decisions, although they should be. If the experts from both sides of the aisle were consulted like they should, our society would see considerably less discontent from the citizens. Finding a balance is the trick there, you are right. However, my rights or choices do not end where someone else's fears pick up. It is plain wrong for some politicians to restrict women's reproductive rights just because they claim to be fearful that human life is being snuffed out, that's not a sound reason to support such restrictive legislation. Likewise, it's not right to place restrictions on private gun ownership/usage either based on fears of the unknown, especially when said measures by and large have failed us, as criminals care not for your rules. This may sound pessimistic, but given how emotionally charged this topic is I rather doubt we will ever reach a happy medium, one of where both sides are fully content. Again I ask, who exactly gets to determine what is and what isn't reasonable, and how do we know for certain who decides things can and will be fair? There are laws in place against drunk driving, and yet each year there are thousands who are killed needlessly because said laws don't appear to be helping enough. That's also a big concern, but I don't see enough talk on that issue and how to maybe improve things where that issue is concerned. You are right, restricting gun ownership will not solve the problem of violence, as potentially violent offenders will simply find other means of carrying out their violent deeds. Society too often makes people feel guilty for seeking out mental health services, it's like such is still taboo for some curious reason, and also how seeking out such help could potentially mark a person for life (the stigma of being a mentally disturbed individual that is). Much work still needs to be done in that department. As for the last part of your reply, right again, politicians from both sides have been a problem and really need to go, but once again I somehow doubt anything will change there so long as the majority of the citizens keep voting for either of the two major political Parties. I do have a theory as to why our society has become so violent prone, but that wouldn't really be appropriate for this group, and I get the feeling that most people on here would simply ignore said theory in favor of believing whatever it is that aligns with their own views and that of which makes them comfortable. Lastly, good to hear that on your own experiences ...
Yup.. 🥴.....

@Rignor Thank you for the taking the time to give honest feedback, and unfortunately you pretty much answered as I thought you (or any other supporters of gun control who would have given feedback) would, so I didn't get surprised. I'm going to tag @Pralina1 and @Redheadedgammy in this reply as well being they voted on your reply, which I take to be a sign that they concured with your assessment. Based on what you mentioned above, I take it you aren't very familiar with guns or have much knowledge on the differences between firearm types? Now, suppose I told you that the photo of my MPX above is actually a replica C02-powered pellet gun that shoots relatively harmless wadcutter pellets that at best would be good for shredding paper targets, and not nowhere near what could be considered an "assault weapon"? That is indeed the case by the way, it is just an airgun, and the point of this post was to show that those in the gun control movement are largely visual (and rather emotional) and judge these guns based on how they look on the outside, instead of taking other factors into consideration first. To be fair, no shortage of high emotions on the gun rights side either, but at least most of those on the gun rights side have direct knowledge on the various types of firearms (and airgun replicas) so as to arrive to logical conclusions. How exactly does one reasonably conclude what does or does not constitute an "assault weapon"? Since 1986 and under the Reagan Administration no less the private ownership of fully automatic weapons has been illegal, and there is a big difference between fully automatic and semi-automatic. Out of all the physical characteristics you mentioned above, don't you think that perhaps there was more focus there on what the weapon looks like instead of taking other possible factors into consideration first? Magazine size, a folding stock, barrel length etc, do not necessarily make such a gun anymore dangerous than say a seven-round 357 Magnum revolver, both can be potentially dangerous yet neither one of them are necessarily what I'd call assault guns. Also, there is a specific reason why there are both Military and civilian versions of the same weapons, hint hint the latter of the two do not possess the full ability of the former. Magazine bans or limits are largely a joke and not even a funny joke at that. A skilled shooter could do just as much damage with multiple ten-round capacity magazines as they could with two or so thirty-round magazines, as most skilled shooters could reload in mere seconds. Stocks and arm braces, depending on the individual shooter, can be mostly for looks, as any reasonably strong individual certainly would not need such in order to use said weapon. Same is mostly true with barrel length, while a ...

SpikeTalon replies on Dec 5, 2021:
@Pralina1 I can agree no one really needs a Military weapon, but such weapons do exist and honestly there are some folks in the Armed Forces who shouldn't have access to such weapons, so what's good for some should be good for all then. While I could be wrong about this, from what I've observed it appears those on the side of gun control legislation are too visually oriented, meaning they focus too much on what the gun in question looks like and a good portion of the guns they refer to as Military-grade firearms are not actually such (that topic might be good for a future post). Hypothetically speaking here for a moment... say that somehow there comes a time when all private gun ownership is banned in the US and all the citizens turn in their guns so that now only Law Enforcement/Government agents/and Military personnel have access to guns... You do realize that people can (and already have) steal weapons off of Military/National Guard bases by means of inside help (inside contacts), right? I know for a fact such has already and continues to happen, some years back personally knew a guy who had black market connections and they had ways of stealing weapons off of a local State Guard barracks and selling the goods on the street. So while there may be concern over privately owned weapons falling into the wrong hands, the same can be said of Federal and State authority's weapons as well. Are we going to insist the Government/Armed Forces surrender all their weapons in order to combat that problem? That of course isn't going to happen anytime soon. That sounds like a nice story, happy for them. If she was a gun owner though, wonder why she was looking for a man to protect her? On the flip side from a man's perspective here, I personally know other male gun owners who seem to have a natural instinct to desire to use their resources (and guns) to protect their wives and girlfriends. If a guy truly cares, he would not want to ever see harm come to his special lady. I can agree on that with the irresponsibility and mentally unstable part, but the question there is how exactly do we go about labeling people such? Not to mention, if we unnecessarily subject certain individuals to testing of any sort and it is found out later they are mentally sound, there could be ensuing lawsuits over privacy infringement etc, which ultimately the taxpayers would foot the bill for that if the State Government gets sued and loses. No easy path there on that one, but I understand and agree with your concern on that. I can certainly respect your decision/choice in not wanting to own a firearm, and you know yourself better than anyone else, and sounds like you made the best choice for yourself. On the last part of your comment... while it's true there are innocent people who ...

SpikeTalon replies on Nov 30, 2021:
If you believe in the concept of live and let live, I'd call that liberal, which I'd consider a good thing. Whilst I can mostly agree that gun owners need to properly secure their guns, it is not my fault if someone decides to break into my residence in order to steal stuff including guns, and proceed to use them in crimes. Most safes and vaults are not 100 % crackproof, so even if guns are locked away in one and a thug breaks in and steals it, won't do alot of good if said thug can crack the safe. What about accountability for the individual who stole the gun and used it in a crime? There seems to be no shortage of anger directed towards the gun owner in such scenarios, but not enough accountability directed towards the criminal who created the problem scenario in the first place, and I take issue with that. Being that I had never before used any of my guns to harm or kill another individual and that I mostly use my firearms for safe target shooting, I must disagree with your conclusion that guns are strictly a weapon meant for killing, as they clearly have other purposes besides maiming or killing. As for home protection measures go, keep in mind that not everyone lives in a single residence that they own, some of us live in rented apartment complexes and I would not have the authority to setup certain measures you mentioned above. Suffice to say, I have taken some of those measures, and would take full advantage of all the above if I had lived in a single home that I owned. Not all gun owners have the mentality of shoot first and ask questions later, can't say I do. As for the need to carry outside the home, I'm still considering doing a post in this group explaining a personal story in regards to such situations, so I'm not going into that now for the sake of saving me some time. Then that tells me gun control measures have and continue to fail, and thus we arrive to the reason why I do posts like this from time to time. People reserve the right to end their own lives, it matters not how they do so, unless your reasoning is strictly for statistical purposes, but such should not be taken into consideration where gun control legislation is concerned, because at that point the situation would be ripe for abuse and what I refer to as "revenge legislation". Care to elaborate a bit more there on the last part? I'd prefer a peaceful defense as opposed to an aggressive offense, but some folks would leave you no choice on the matter and force your hand. For what it's worth, I don't always carry wherever I go, sometimes I go out unarmed with only wearing a body armor vest, I would call that falling back on a decent defense. Like I mentioned above, I have reason for thinking and saying as I do based on direct personal experience, and as time allows me ...

@Trajan61 I certainly agree on the suicide part, does not make much sense. You're right about the rules too, but how do you convince someone otherwise who actually believes you could just waltz into a local WalMart lay your money down and a few moments later walk out of the store with a new gun? That's not reality, but try telling that to someone who has bought into the lies of the gun control lobby.

There are very few pro gun democrats left today so I find it kind of hard to be pro gun and support the liberal democrats. I can’t see how anyone could vote for Joe Biden who is a rabid gun control nut and promised to take on the NRA and call themselves pro gun.
SpikeTalon replies on Nov 30, 2021:
At times based on their actions, I don't think alot of those Democrats are truly liberal. It astounds and concerns me to no end the people who claim to be liberal and yet support authoritarian actions or measures.

What is wrong with having better rules in place? Criminals don't care about your rules which is why they are called criminals. Some of the biggest cities which are Democrat controlled and that have strict gun control measures in place also see some serious homicides by firearm. In Philadelphia alone this year there have been over 500 homicides by gun regardless of the fact that Philly is so restrictive you can't even order a slingshot online and have it delivered there. Yet, such laws have not stopped criminals. I have a personal story I could share with you later that could go a little deeper on the matter, but I don't have the time right now. I see your point, but there already are strict gun control measures in most states, do you even have any idea what the average gun owner has to go through first before getting the new gun into his/her hands? You have waiting periods, background checks, licenses etc, and yet none of that seems to deter criminals. Sounds like a parenting problem there. I grew up around and used guns, and never once did I shoot someone or myself. Never said there was anything wrong with the Government advising people of dangers related to either guns or drunk driving, what I question is just how effective is such? Last year there were over 110 million cases of alcohol-impaired driving accidents, despite the constant preaching from Government that drunk driving is bad. Their tactics don't appear to be working much. Since when has banning anything made it go away permanently? We tried criminalizing recreational drugs, that hasn't worked out and created one hell of a black market. There was a time when gays could not get married, but did that stop them from getting together? There was a dark time when abortion procedures were outlawed, did that stop women from seeking out abortions? If anything, the laws at that time got women killed. Philadelphia has some strict gun control measures in place, but that didn't/has not stopped criminals and gangs from shooting each other up. This isn't Europe. June of 2020 there were hundreds of BLM and ANTIFA protesters marching down my street, some of whom decided to pick a fight with my neighbor who was only minding his own business. Nevermind the fact ANTIFA has openly advocated for violence against anyone who does agree with their agenda, which is very concerning. When you've got a scenario involving hundreds of potentially violent protesters, that 30 round rifle sounds like a good idea to have on hand just in case. The fear and concerns on that matter are very real. Can't count on the police either, especially knowing the effort from many Democrats to defund police departments, and police are peace officers and not bodyguards, it is up to the individual to defend themselves. I'm not ...

Sadly, I've already dealt with people either asking or telling me I can't eat certain things, which is among one the worst downsides to having diabetes. At times I've wondered why it had to be Type 1 I got, at least some type 2s can somewhat reverse their condition with specific diet and don't have to go on insulin right away. Up to age 35 when I got diagnosed, I went out of my way to lead as healthy a lifestyle as possible, never smoked, hardly drank, always exercised alot etc, and in the end what did it get me? Also a main reason why I don't believe in a god or deity, Type 1 is a truly screwed up thing, should never even occur in a world with an intelligent designer, which of course there isn't one. All I know is daily living can be tough, some days worse than others, with the big worry being dangerously low blood sugars. The serious low I experienced last December was unlike anything I had ever experienced prior... had been through trying events in my life which were either physically or emotionally draining, and yet I always pulled through. That low blood sugar episode though came quick with no warning and knocked me flat on my ass, only good thing there was that luckily I wasn't alone at that time, or otherwise I might not be here today.

@TheMiddleWay If you sent a message and deleted your account, the message would have disappeared anyways, so all good. I know who the unreasonable ones on IDW are, and I've learned to just avoid them after awhile. Not worth the time arguing with such folks. I understand, and at times I've wondered myself just how wonderful social media really is? The uptick in cases of clinical depression may very well be linked to excessive social media usage, but that's another story... As for community, neither site reminds me of a strong community, just echo chambers for your preferred side, and I've encountered revolting individuals on both sites. All good on the note part, both sites have frequent glitches, so that's understandable. As for Admin posting an update on IDW and not here, given in the past on this site how some jumped to conclusions and even threatened to doxx Admin over some of his political views, can't say I blame him for skipping over this site. How are such actions representative of a community? Keep in mind though the membership numbers on both sites are somewhat low in comparison to other major social media platforms, which is why it may appear that way to you. With that said, I'm not disagreeing with the last sentence in your reply above. One last thought regarding the battle of the political sides, in particular the vaccination debate. As of May of this year I became fully vaccinated against Covid, and for the most part I think I made the best decision for myself and those around me (you know, the libertarian or voluntary thing to do). I can sympathize with both sides in that debate. Some people are not so anti-vaxx as they are suspicious and critical of others, they have become distrustful of fellow human beings based on how they were treated in the past. That suspicion/fear works both ways, as I've sat back and observed some of the terrible things pro-vaxxers have said about those who hold differing views on the matter. How is debasing such people and wishing them dead any more humanist in nature than those who are suspicious of vaccines? Both extremes are driven by irrational fears. Take my own mother for example... some months back before I finally convinced her to get vaccinated against Covid, there would have been pro-vaxxers out there who would have been quick to say terrible things about my mother for not getting vaccinated and accuse her of spreading the virus, regardless of the fact that she has largely been confined to her home for the past few years now and that I help her with chores that she needs to do. Both sides make crude assumptions, and when people let themselves become driven by fears and emotions there's no reasoning with such people. Also wanted to mention that after the second dose I became sick for close to ...

Indeed. Back in May was on a ten day trial of the Dexcom (for my Endocrinologist in order to get a better understanding of my BG trends), and it sure made my life much easier living with Type 1 Diabetes.

@FreethinkerAg At top of post there should be an option to share to Facebook or copy link.

Using this logic (or lack there of) everyone here that does not believe a god is protecting them should have a gun... 🙄

Yes yes and yes!
You know.

In reading some of the comments, predictably enough some members got the wrong idea as to the reason why I did this post. Yes, misinformation and conspiracy theories are problems, but beside the main point of this post and another topic altogether. I too stand with the medical community on the Covid...

@holdenc98 Okay, thanks.

I see your point, but the truth of the matter is that many of us have given up on the antivaxxed on this site and have accepted the fact that they aren't going to change. That being said, the false information they post is alarming. We attempted to contact admin about it and have false information ...

@UrsiMajor You need to do what you feel is best for you, and I would support whatever decision you make on the matter regardless of whether or not I may agree or disagree. Been doing alot of thinking recently on that topic, and have since backed away from doing posts that could possibly be considered dehumanizing in some way, made me realize that my approach could have been driving opposing views away, such is the case with my experiences with the unvaccinated and my attempts to change their mind. The private message route sounds like a good idea.

what is the ethnic profile of the vaccine deniers? hello? anybody home? white lives matter

Were you tagging me somewhere on this post? Can't see it, if it was under that RedCat guy's comment, won't do any good as I blocked that wanker. I haven't got the spare time to bicker with the rude folks, and will focus my attention on those who contribute constructive comments, regardless if I may agree or disagree with them and they with me.
You know.

@UrsiMajor Sorry to hear that, no one should have to put up with threats like that, and people that do make vile threats like that should probably be in prison.
