ENNUI.
MarkWolf comments on Oct 29, 2021:
Here it is - Ennui by Walter Sickert. One can feel the listlessness and boredom. The flash of light over Queen Victoria’s shoulder is supposed to be a clue inserted by Sickert as to whom Jack the Ripper was (it looks a bit like a white bird - the queen’s personal physician was called William ...
LenHazell53 replies on Oct 29, 2021:
William Withey Gull was seventy-two when the ripper murders happened and was partially paralysed from the first two strokes, of a series of which would kill him 18 months later. Further he was not the personal physician of the royal household, that was Sir James Reid, who had been appointed in 1880, Gull had gained his knighthood in 1871 for saving the life of the Prince of Wales by administering a technique he had invented that would in time come to be known as cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (falsely attributed to Dr Peter Safar in the 1950s) as related by Mark Twain in his obituary of Doctor Gull who was frankly a genius "When the Prince seemed dead Mr. Gull dealt blow after blow between the shoulders, breathed into his nostrils, and literally cheated Death" Mark Twain. Walter Sickert on the other hand was a very weird man and was almost certainly the author of the fake ripper letters, sent to Scotland Yard at the height of the panic, as is evidence by comparing his handwriting with that of the fake ripper. He is also actually the inspiration for the eponymous character in "The Lodger" by Marie Adelaide Belloc Lowndes, the first known fictionalisation of the ripper case. The Author was present at a party attended by Sickert, where she heard him boasting of how he had taken rooms in Limehouse for inspiration, and had succeeded in convincing his landlady that he was indeed the Ripper, hence the title of the paining he made there "Jack the Ripper's Bedroom" Marie Lowndes put the story down in print, it was converted in to a play and later in to one of Alfred Hitchcock's first films.
Not uncommon words but the ideas in today's world seem to be especially significant.

Defenestration-the action of dismissing someone from a position of power or authority.
p-nullifidian comments on Oct 25, 2021:
One of my favorite words! When our family was in Prague not long ago, we took a tour and were told by the guide about the origin of this term, not in Italy, as we might have assumed. Pity we don’t have the same opportunities with some of our leaders these days! 😉 Thank you for sharing this one.
LenHazell53 replies on Oct 25, 2021:
True, the word was coined in English reports of the murder of two imperial governors and their secretary being thrown from a castle keep window of Prague castle, thus sparking the 30 years war in 1618. Known as the Defenestrations of Prague, this is the first know usage of the word in English. The first known incident of Defenestrations is biblical, and involved Queen Jezebel wife of King Ahab being murdered by her own Eunuch servants, who finally having had enough of her abuse and general nastiness, stripped her naked and threw her out of a palace window to die in shame in the street below.

@JackPedigo Perhaps you are right about needing the sarcasm punctuation, since in this piece it is not Father Jessup who is being sarcastic, though he thinks he is, he is just being a dick and is using Antiphrasis, not sarcasm, it is Mrs. Doyle in that ironically by choosing to abide by father Jessup's rules, she makes it his fault he is denied his desires.

LenHazell53 replies on Oct 24, 2021:
Much of what people today call sarcasm is not, it is simple cruel imitations and assumed intellectual superiority or arrogance. Actual Sarcasm is not used in anger or exasperation, but in gentle mockery or as a form of satire. In the example I site above, the brutal mockery of father Jessup is shown up as foolish by the actual sarcasm of Mrs Doyle in pretending to agree with him on his own terms and denying him the tea that he actually desires.

@altschmerz Yup in Khrushchev private paper made public after the fall of the USSR it was revealed he Khrushchev, three times, reached out to JFK to de-escalate the Cuba situation, JFK's response was to order the depth charging of a soviet nuclear sub and radio jam them. Thanks to an "accident" only dummy depth charges were used, however the Russians did not know this. The captain of the Sub was unwilling to make the decision to retaliate with a nuclear strike on the USA alone (which was standard protocol when out of radio contact with Moscow) and so held a vote with his first and second officers on whether or not to do so, by a 2 to 1 majority it was decided not to fire on the USA as it would probably in initiate war. After this incident was reported to Bobby Kennedy, United States Attorney General, he went over his brother's head and spoke to Khrushchev personally. It was agreed that publicly the USSR would agree to withdraw from Cuba if the USA agree not to invade it. Privately and secretly, it was agreed that the USA would withdraw their nuclear arms from Turkey and Italy and not go ahead with the planned nuclear base in Denmark. The Pentagon agreed to co-operate with Bobby K and hide what they had done from the increasingly insane JFK, whose's drug addled mind (Thanks to Max Jacobson who was supposed to be treating him for back pain and phlebitis) was in fact rendering him incapable of rational thought, and was instead giving him an invincibility complex. Bobby also banned Jacobson from the Whitehouse after this and appointed new doctors, who were frankly horrified by the treatments being given and refused to continue it, much to JFK's anger. However, there was a marked improvement in John's mental state after the missile crisis, up until his assassination later in 1963

The father then sneered and asked what it was like being able to drink alcohol and coffee, to which I replied I had always been tea total before and after the church and was allergic to coffee and so would not know. He dragged his family away with a look of abject confusion and horror all over his face that I was not drunken, destitute, deranged and depraved without the words and threats of Ol' Jo Smith to guide me. @Marionville Yes it was replaced after many complaints of exploitation by the YTS (Youth Training Scheme) which had a very loose definition of youth (under 40). If choose to self emolliate, that is my personal choice. However, if I choose to self emolliate and then walk in to my crowded work place or a school, that is way outside the realms of personal choice, that is at best assault at worst murder. IF a person choses to not be vaccinated during a plague, and stay home and die, I have no problem with that. But if they chose to not be vaccinated during a plague and go out infecting all and sundry, they are not exercising freedom of choice, they are indulging in criminal behaviour.
