Have you noticed a decline in writing skills?

LenHazell53 replies on Jun 22, 2018:
@Ellatynemouth The unstoppable killer is one of the 8 quintessential monster, it represents the inevitability and unpredictability of death and has been around as long as there has been literature and myth. The first cinema version was the early filmed version of the Lodger, set in England and based on an English novel, as were a number of films that moved out of being thrillers (such as Peeping Tom 1960) and in to Horror films. So the first (recognizably) modern (non Italian) slasher film was the the "All through the house" section of the British tales from the Crypt 1972 where a Psychotic Santa lays siege to the home of a murderous wife, that lead directly the following year to "Black Christmas" the first actual slasher teen serial killer movie, before it was perfected in 1978 by John Carpenter in Halloween, originally meant to be a full length remake of "all through the house" but shifted from Christmas to Halloween at the insistence of the producer. It is not particularly an american phenomena, since inevitable death is a universal fear.

LenHazell53 replies on Jun 21, 2018:
@IAmLove But right and wrong are just similes for good and bad and subject to the same subjective conditions Eating beef is wrong for a Hindu, right for a jew, eating pork is wrong for a Muslim right for a Christian. Eating meat on a Friday used to be wrong for a catholic but is right now. The bible says slavery is right, but Christians say slavery is wrong, which means saying the bible is wrong which is a blasphemy. In the example I gave, one mans tyrant is another man's democratically elected leader so you saying you would not serve him makes you a traitor for doing what you feel is right and your family might suffer for that in such a regime. You may feel you are serving the victim of the mugging by intervening, but you are making a victim of the mugger, hurting his family and without knowing his motivation, you may be doing him an injustice. All I am saying is Right and wrong, good and bad, negative and positive in society are ***not simple,*** they are subjective, trying to simplify it makes it more complex, because no two people believe exactly the same thing and will invariably come in to conflict, and both will claim to be on the side of right, good, positive thought and eventually will be willing to kill and die for that belief.

Very few movies have remakes that are better.
LenHazell53 replies on Jun 18, 2018:
Far to many remakes are completely unnecessary, back when film was still in it's infancy, remaking a silent or black and white film with a larger budget and better technical equipment was fine, today it is largely a quick cash grab, or an attempt to get round having to be original. The rash of John Carpenter remakes in the last few years has been proven time and again that film is a cumulative art, just updating a script, and throwing money at a movie will not make it better.

Actually under the laws of the 3rd Reich yes they did, being a Jew or the decedent of a jew and remaining in Germany was a crime. Being a Homosexual was a crime as it was in the USA too at that time and the UK and the majority of Europe., so was being a gypsy in Reich territory and so was being a Freemason or a Jehovah's witness. So by the logic you posit, objecting to the "Final solution" was the act of a bleeding heart liberal acting against the law and the betterment of right thinking Aryan society, even if some pathetic left wingers did feel sorry for them, they should not have broken the law by being born in the wrong place.

Ocean’s Eleven and Casino Royale. Both of the originals kinda sucked. The newer versions, in particular Casino Royale, were much better.
LenHazell53 replies on Jun 18, 2018:
Casino Royale 1967 was a parody not an adaptation and had nothing to do with the source material other than the name of the book and the name of James Bond, a very loose adaptation of Casino Royale had been done as a TV movie in 1954 about an american Intelligence agent names Jimmy Bond, hence it being the only Bond Novel at that time which had not sold the film rights to Cubby Broccoli (he lost the rights to Thunderball some years later) So there is a case for saying the 2006 version is the only real version of Casino Royale ever made. The original version of Ocean's Eleven 1960 is a classic in my opinion.

Had Michael Crichton still been alive I doubt very much this series would ever have been made.
LenHazell53 replies on Jun 17, 2018:
@LaMariposa A number of reason, firstly there is his public reaction to the last time that there was a Westworld TV series back in the 1970s, then there is his assertion that west world was just a prototype for Jurassic Park that he had simply attempted to write too early. The general philosophy of the series is not in line with Crichton's ethos, the running theme of which was that life finds a way to evolve and be itself, not that simply looking like something will imprint on it and have it endevour to be that thing. In Westworld, the film (1973), the android do not revolt in some kind of half asses allegory of the French or Russian revolution, they revolt because they are what they have been programmed to be, in the case of The Gunfighter (Yul Brenner) that is a killer and the best gun fighter in the world, he kills because he is sick of losing to inferiors, he "becomes" Likewise the animals in Jurrasic Park "become" what they were genetically designed to be, predators, not safe version for public consumption. The Terminal man, is implanted with technology to control his violent impulses, in stead it pits his mind in a war with the AI and he "becomes" the psychotic killer he always had the potential to be. In the Andromeda Strain the team are forced by time constraints to "become" what they have always had the potential to be, while faced with an enemy that is evolving fast to "become" the perfect conqueror. Crichton writes about the mantel of the arrogant Gods being ripped away and who not fully understanding their own creations are saved only by embracing there true nature, the noble savage, which ironically what they was seeking for in the first place. Westworld the TV series is about the decadence of humanity getting it's just comeuppance at the hands of the oppressed new peasantry or slave race, hardly the same thing.

LenHazell53 replies on Jun 15, 2018:
@Heraclitus It is largely why there have been no revelations, or divine pronouncements from any of the prophets in almost 40 years. The LDS has redefined what a prophet is, and it does not include divine guidance, the gift of prophesy in the accepted sense, infallibility, healing, counseling, tongues, the ability to work miracles other than to live on a "modest" stipend of $120,000 per year, plus living allowance, plus parsonage allowance, plus use of church cars and transport, plus child allowance (regardless of age of children) plus food allowance and entertainment allowance, plus expenses (unlimited) for anything else needed. Oh yes and of course salaries for being the CEO of the corporation of the president of the church of latter day saints and a salary for being the CEO of the corporation of the corporation of the presiding bishop of the church of latter-day saints and administrative control of the churches investments currently valued at $32 BILLION. But so far as metaphysical and holy powers go, the Prophet can do no more than anyone else with the second anointing.

@Heraclitus Yes because the contents were never revealed by the church but by Hoffman himself, plenty of the other forgeries he sold them had been disclosed, because they backed up the official version of the church history (the Lucy Mac letters, the printers invoice, the reformed Egyptian transcriptions) they were all bait to lend credibility to the authenticity of the Salamander letter. This was Hoffman's coup de grace and he admitted part of his motivation all along had been to embarrass the church with the most preposterous story ever, knowing they would go for it out of pure fear of their "prophet" being shown up as a satanist. when Hoffman went to trail for murder and bombings and began spilling the beans they had to admit to being tricked as the only way to get their money back.

A case can be made for Dawn of the Planet of the apes being a remake of Conquest of the planet of the apes, but it is pushing it, taking both rise and war as as a two part remake of Battle for the planet of the apes holds a little more water. Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes is comparable to the first film in the same way as Charlie and the chocolate factory, is comparable to Willy Wonker and the Chocolate factory, in that they both use the same source material (Pierre Boulle's La monde des singes, later re-titled La Planète des singes) the latter film in both cases being much more true to the Novel, but the earlier version being a far better film.

LenHazell53 replies on Jun 15, 2018:
To be honest both the 1910 version and the 1925 version are actually more variations on The marvelous Land of Oz rather than the Wonderful wizard of Oz mainly because L Frank Baum's son took a controlling interest in the making of the films and had as a Child always Hated the first book. By the time the 1939 film came along he was willing to sell the rights to the first book outright, but kept the rights to the others, when the first film was a hit he demanded a fortune for the rights to the other ans so scuppered all chances of sequels. (Also the fact that some of the sequels have some very dubious content in them including Pip the hero of The Marvelous Land of Oz literally changing sex part way through the book and the introduction of a strange tramp like figure known as the Shaggy man, who steals children from our world and takes them away to Oz.) There was not an actual version of The Marvelous Land of Oz made until 1972 when an animated version was sold on the gimmick of having Liza Minelli play Dorothy (who is not in the original book) it was so unfaithful to the source material the title was changed to Journey Back to Oz. All Baum's work is out of copyright now and so is Tampered with unmercifully.

He wanted all the truth about Joseph's myth to be suppressed utterly and for official church historians to simply put out the official propaganda (oops "faith promoting") stories (for which read lies) Yet bare in mind this was the dick who along with former president Hinckley, current Mormon no.2 Dallin Hoax and the first presidency paid thousands of dollars for the faked up documents claiming Smith actually got the BOM from a talking golden salamander sent from the devil, mocked up by MORMON FORGER EXTRAORDINAIRE Mark Hoffman, so that they could hide them. Which for me proves absolutely the first presidency and quorum of the 12 has always known Smith was a con man and by extension so are they.

John Carpenter's version of The Thing. Also, The remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, with Donald Sutherland and Nimoy was better than the original and the subsequent "Invasion," with Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman.

Yes Carpenter's the thing was brilliant, and stuck closer to the source material, Howard Hawks always claimed the studio lumbered him with a giant walking carrot, when he wanted to make the film John Carpenter eventually made. I loved it, too! And I was so mad when Titanic came out and they totally glossed over her story.
LenHazell53 replies on Jun 14, 2018:
It didn't, it gave a slightly less bullshit version of her actual story. For a start her name was Maggie, not Molly, she was not adopted, she was not a Tomboy, she was a gold digger but married JJ Brown because though poor his skill as a mining engineer promised a good return in the long run, it did but from work not from prospecting she then left him and rather than go through a divorce and scandal he paid her to stay out of the country and not embarrass him. That is how she came to be on the Titanic, she was travelling to nurse a sick grandchild. Though rightly famous for aiding in the evacuation and the saving and caring Titanic passenger, her story was nothing like the romanticized musical version, that was an adaptation of a book, that was an adaptation of an earlier musical play. Taken as a film in it's own right it is on a level perhaps with other B list musicals of the Hollywood heyday of the musical comedy such as, The music man, Gigi, Goldigger (1929 -1936)

The "beginning" of the universe is the most mind boggling concept to me. On one hand, how could it have been here "forever"? LenHazell53 replies on Jun 13, 2018:
Try considering the word forever as a temporally reliant word, that only has meaning in a universe where linear time exists. Step outside of time and picture the whole of of time and space as something static not moving, a ball of potential, self sustaining, self created, self aware. All that is, was and will be, constantly present, unchanging and complete, within which is every potential outcome, every action and in action including it not being there at all. Now imagine you can don a suit that is called time, wearing this you can enter the ball and move around it, interact with it in sequential sets of events, see thing as the inhabitants see them. This thing IS it never WAS NOT, never will not be, because time exists only within it, not outside of it. The big bang is simply at its core, it's out shell though seen with in as the end, is just another part of the eternal whole. Take time out the equations and see if that allows you to comprehend existence objectively.

Did I miss something? Incel stands for *involuntarily* celibate. They didn't choose not to find a partner, they're just too noxious for people to find attractive
LenHazell53 replies on Jun 13, 2018:
@ghost_warlock I'm afraid (and I use the term literally) you are wrong, *"Nobody is lumping all single people in with Incel."* You do not speak for everyone, and people can, do, and will misapply labels once created. Don't believe me? When the term "potential rapist" was introduced it was for a specific group of unhinged and dangerous people, it was soon applied by a certain group of other people to anyone with a penis and while being technically true, it cannot actually be denied on other than on a psychological level. "Misogynist" was a term only applied to a specific mental condition, now any man who disagrees with any woman on anything, is according to some, behaving like a misogynist and therefore is one. Feminist was a follower of an ideology of social equality for ALL people. Now it it is a word thrown about by angry people to describe anyone to be discredited as an unpleasantly self righteous, uneducated neonazi extremist who happens to be female. Look at the word Incel itself, Involuntarily celibate, in it's full form is fine, it says what it means, and nothing more. However: In, is immediately suggestive of a negative especially when followed by the C/S sound (insensitive, incapable, insincere) Cel connotes a prison cell, a small cell in the biological sense. The portmanteau contraction Incel, therefore in no way connotes involuntary celibacy as is the case with say Frienemy, or Hangry. it is just a nasty word suggesting someone who if not already locked up should be *in (a) cell,* someone small and insincere some one insular *(inCelular?).* At the risk of sounding conspiratorial, this word was no accident, it is designed to be a man haters dream. My point is creating labels that can and will be seized on and used as weapons against larger groups of people perhaps never originally intended to be included in the definition is a bad idea, and popularizing them unopposed is an even worse one.

LenHazell53 replies on Jun 13, 2018:
Incels are by definition without a partner, however not all involuntarily celibate people identify as or should be labeled incels. There used to be a phrase "Never found Mr./Miss right" these people still exist and are not hateful, nasty or horrible, they just are choosy, or have something about them such as social anxiety, that limits their options. The current trend of labeling anyone without a regular partner, or string of partners as some sort of social deviant, a monstrous person who must have some sort of flawed character is very dangerous, both to society and to those people made to feel inadequate or horrible, or evil simply because they are not shagging everything that moves.

And can be thought of as selfish by those who have too. I was diagnosed as bi-polar at the age of 11, I have struggled with suicidal tendencies from the age of 14 on a daily basis. I faced my "demons" years ago and decided, should I ever actually kill myself, It will be organised before hand, so as to be certain of success, with all post-mortem arrangements made first, so as not to burden anyone. I would never put my family and friends through a bogus and abortive attempt at suicide as that would be cowardly, selfish and attention seeking behaviour of the lowest order. Having made those decisions, taken responsibility for my own life and death, I cope with my conditions and keep them in check. It is a matter of respect for others and for oneself.

When I say education I mean exactly that, you first teach children to think critically, you teach the scientific method, you teach historical facts, teach inductive reason and logic and then you teach them to apply it to the politics religion etc of there own time and of times past. With that grounding, people will look at the crusades and ask, were they mad? They will look at the inquisition and find it abominable that people were willing to torture in the name of god and equally that people were willing to die for their gods. and will finally conclude they were all victims of money hungry priests, rabbis and imams. Fundamentally religion is an insult to reason all that is needed is provide the tools and foundations and let human nature take its course.

Yes I am Legend was the original novel by Richard Matheson, filmed first in 1963 as The last man on earth/future man starring Vincent Price and again in 1971 as the Omega man, though in this version the vampires are replaced with genetic mutant albinos, finally filmed under it's original title in 2007 Will Smith's version is the least faithful to the novel retaining only the name of the protagonist, and thus makes a nonsense of the title, I am Omega was released as a mock buster, of the 71 and 2007 titles, but actually has more in common with Night of the Living Dead. Romero admitted that since the novel has two types of vampires, the staggering snuffling undead and the intelligent humanoid vampire civilization, Night of the living dead was actually another remake, but only using the first kind of monster, by renaming them Zombies he got around having to pay royalties and popularized zombies as a viable movie monster, doubly adding a third mockbuster credit for Diary of the dead, Romero's sequel that also came out in 2007.
Any one into B movies ?
