Is hope realistic?
St-Sinner comments on Oct 29, 2019:
This is an unnecessary deep thought. Hope is hope. It is not even close to reality in meaning. Hope based on a realistic or pragmatic assessment of a situation can be sound. Anything else is a fool's game.

I tend, very often, to think when I look through British/English 'History' that the whole story has been written to illicit a kind of surge of sympathy from the reader based upon something akin to " Oh, those people, invaded and conquered ever so many times, so much were they oppressed and persecuted by those nasty, terrible, war-mongering WE MUST have very deep sympathy and understandings for them." It is kind of like the 'alleged Persecutions' by the Ancient Romans that the Xrstians so tediously and regularly whine about, persecutions that costs thousands and thousands of Xrstian lives, those self-same persecutions that, Historically NEVER really occurred any way since Ancient Rome NEVER sought to crush out the beliefs of those it conquered, they did give a frog's fart IF you worshipped a bucket full of horse-shit or anything else for that matter, ALL that mattered to the Romans was that you gave your allegiance to the Emperor and the Empire and paid your taxes when required. It has been proven ever so many times historically that the Romans would adopt and adapt the beliefs of others INTO their own religious beliefs, the Religion of Mithras is ONE prime example, it was very wide-spread throughout Asia Minor, the Romans conquered the areas and then adopted Mithras into their Pantheon of Gods and Goddesses just as they did with the Pantheon of Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses as well as the many of the Celtic ones as well. So, as they say on a certain television show, " Myth Busted" for the Xrstian Persecutions myths.

Over my 50+ years as an Atheist I have asked innumerable Priests, Ministers of Religion and Followers of Religion the same question, " Why is it that this god whom you worship has ONLY names given to it by Humans and NEVER reveals its TRUE name?" The answer, most usually and predictable, comes backs as this, " God fears that should his TRUE name be revealed to man and it be spoken then it shall cause God to become enraged so much that either man will turn away from him OR he shall turn away from man, destroy his Creation and vanish for ever." When I've asked, " Then WHY would this God become so enraged to hear his creations, MAN, speak his TRUE name in praise of him and his wonderful works?" And, usually, the answer/s come back as such, " We are not permitted to know the mind of God," and, " Who are we to question God, we MUST simply accept God and obey him."

Triphid replies on Oct 29, 2019:
@Norman347 But, the supposed 'Free Will' endowed upon us by this god thingy has numerous CLAUSES included in it, does it not? For example, there ARE well more than the mere Ten Commandments that MUST be adhered to and obeyed to the letter, there ARE strict dietary regulations as well as rules of what types of materials MUST NOT be worn with others, etc, etc, So, this god thingy GIVES humans a 'gift' and then adds copious amounts of caveats to it, does anyone else give a gift to a person or persons and then DEMAND that such a GIFT be used ONLY as the GIVER deems it SHALL be used? Free Will truly means, in the opinion of most people, " This is yours, do with it as you will," and NOT " This is yours BUT I demand that you do with it EXACTLY as I tell you and NO different."

@MattHardy Yeah, @MattHardy, try asking for this 'tolerance' of yours from the other 54+ million people who also died as a result of the War in Europe against the Nazis as well as the yet, untold thousands, perhaps millions, who suffered and died under the Japanese as well? Ask the survivors of those who were forced to build the Burma Railway for the Japanese about this 'tolerance' of which you preach, OR, ask the Prisoners of the Japs from Ambon Island where my late Uncle Arthur was held captive and survived though dozens of his fellow mates were either starved to death or worked to death by the Japs. Yep, 'tolerance' is a great example of the old " Ostrich burying its head in the sand and hoping it will all go away" isn't it? I'm sure at least ONE of those VICTIMS of tolerance will agree with you, NOT.

At EVERY single 'Call-out' to an Emergency, BEFORE leaving the Depot, WE were required by our very Christian Local Controller and , note this please, a Married Man WITH a Wife and 4 children, to stand, heads bowed and pray for 5-10 minutes INSTEAD of jumping into the Rescue vehicles and heading out, post haste, to the Emergency. After one very major Emergency, when we all returned to the Depot we walked in to discover the Local Controller having very obvious and passionate sex with his Secretary in our Changing Rooms, at least a dozen of us resigned that day and went immediately to the local Fire Brigade to offer them our services.

Out here, IF a Shearer was doing shit like that either the Boss of the Shearing Crew or the Grazier would grab him/her by the scruff of his/her neck and kick his/her (yes, we also have female Shearers out as well) arse all the way back to their sleeping quarters to collect their belongs and then continue to kick their arse until they were OFF the property completely. And word would quickly be spread around amongst EVER other Shearing Crew in the country and the mongrel would be hard pressed to even land a job trimming lawns after that. To the Sheep Graziers (Sheep Cockies as they are affectionately called out here) their stock IS their livelihood and everyone of them IS important to them. Yes, on rare occasions these days since the old blade shears are no longer used, a sheep gets a small nick BUT that small nick IS attended to immediately by covering it with an antiseptic solution mixed with Coal Tar to seal it and prevent infection from starting. That IS a part of the job that the Shed Rouse-about does besides gathering up the fleeces and spreading them out on the Classing Table for the Wool Classer to check through and examine. But his ceaseless 'dropping' of religious quotations and pamphlets into our mailboxes and often pinning them to our doors HAS gone well past being an annoyance. The law here states that " Ever house MUST have unhindered access to the MAIN front entrance FOR legitimate Visitors, Tradespeople, etc." But, those trying to 'push' religion to households can be considered as NOT having Legitimate/Legal Reasons in the eyes of the Law BUT, and here's the cruncher, " They can claim, under their Freedoms of Religions, that they ARE doing 'God's Work.' However, should a homeowner/tenant affix a notice/sign to the property/front gate or fence stating " No religion/s," or "Religion Free Zone," or words to that effect, then, legally, those 'pushing' their religion/s, etc, MUST heed to and obey that notice AND refrain from entering or leaving ANY and ALL religious messages. etc, on or near that property or face Police Prosecution. @TheoryNumber3 Many omnivorous humans I know are also people who care about the welfare of animals, me included. As for the Wool Production Industry being "heinous" HOW do you come to that conclusion? I have often worked with a number of Sheep Graziers in my area and can state, Categorically, that they treat their sheep quite decently and very humanely to say the very least. Shearing sheep removes the annual build up of wool and IF left unshorn that wool continues to grow and grow until it becomes very matted, flies lay their eggs in it and the larvae, being flesh devouring themselves, worm their down through the matted, dirty, burr filled wool, find the skin of the animal and begin burrowing into then they start eating away at the living animal, Have you ever seen what a sheep infested with fly maggots looks like, I have when we have mustered sheep and found one or that have either missed the annual muster or have strayed from another property belong to a careless, useless Grazier, it is gut wrenching and the poor sheep is so badly chewed up with big holes through its skin, rotting flesh oozing foul smelling pus, etc, and the ONLY humane and decent thing that can be done is it put it out its misery with a .22 caliber bullet through its brain, instant death and relief. Fyi, Shearing sheep IS harder on those shearing them than it is on the sheep by far harder on the Shearers than it is on the sheep themselves. The average Shearer can manage to shear between 150 and 250 sheep per day, he starts work at 7.30am, spends the time bent over from the waist, holding the sheep firmly between his legs and shears off the wool, similar to a human undressing, in ONE complete piece, the sheep is then released down a slide to join the ones he has shorn previously, who, btw, are usually now feeling much, much lighter since they have just been unburdened of a load of wool that can weigh anywhere between 2-5 kilos. It takes a good experienced shear less than 5 minutes, on average to shear each sheep and he does this non-stop from 7.30am until 'Smoko' time at 10.00am for a 15 minute break then goes back to again until 12.30pm when he breaks for 30 minutes for 'Crib' (Lunchtime) then resumes again until 4,30-5.00pm when it is 'Knock Off for the day time.' This WILL continue everyday, Monday thru Friday for as many weeks as there are sheep to shorn. Immediately after shearing, the Grazier will 'dip' the sheep ( run them through a system of sprays) that will rid them of lice and other external pests, THEN 'drench' them ( give them an oral dose of vermicide medicine) to rid them of internal parasites, these treatments will last the sheep for the next 6 months BEFORE they are again mustered and the treatments are repeated. I don't know HOW they do it America BUT over here ...
Oh shit, it seems I've done it yet again, though definitely NOT deliberately.

Before him ,the people who owned that house were religious but religion was never discussed among neighbors, we'd often have a chat over the fence or just 'drop in' for a coffee and chat with each other BUT he visits very uninvited most times and wheels out his bible and starts preaching at will. I'll more than likely truly piss him off very soon simply because I'm painting a new address plate for my front gate and fully intend to have on it, not only my house number BUT words to the effect that say clearly," Religion Free Zone, NO religious pamphlets, etc, permitted beyond this point." And , as the owner of this property it IS my right to do so.
Oh shit, it seems I've done it yet again, though definitely NOT deliberately.

@Spinliesel I would MUCH rather NOT have my Evangelist neighbor as a friend, or, sometimes, even as a neighbor as well. Life IS so quiet and enjoyable WHEN he decides to be absent from his place for months on end, when he's around most of the other neighbors feel like they are 'walking on eggshells when they are out in their yards or gardening, etc, simply because, and this IS no joke, he makes it HIS business to know what you are doing and how you are doing it. He is, no joke here either, like a bloody Gestapo paid spy, so bad that I have erected 2 fences on my property, both well over 7 feet high and separated by about 6 feet between them that blocks out his view from my backyard completely, just so as I can go about my own business in peace, etc.
Oh shit, it seems I've done it yet again, though definitely NOT deliberately.

@Spinliesel Yeah, glad to make you happy and hope this will cheer you up even more since I know how the fine would have been because I saw the Police officer write it out, though I THINK he made sure I could see him doing it. The fine amounts to 873 $ A and MUST be paid WITHIN 30days or makes arrangements to pay in installments, IF not he gets summoned to Court and will, most likely, be charged and cop not only that fine to pay BUT a whole lot extra from the Court as well.
Oh shit, it seems I've done it yet again, though definitely NOT deliberately.

Yeah, and that's not all either. About an hour LATER, well after I had finished, turned off the Stereo and showered to get rid of the dirt and sweat, a police officer knocks on my door and states that they'd received a complaint about the noise I was making. I told him that, "Yes, I had been cleaning up my front veranda, Yes, I had music playing and IF he wished I could turn the 'offending' sound system back on, at the EXACT volume that I had it on earlier since I had only turned it off, disconnected the speakers fixed to my front wall and then proceeded to have a shower." With a bit of smirky kind of humorous grin and a slightly muffled giggle, he simply said, " Okay, give me a listen then please." I played the music, outside speakers connected as well, at the exact same volume, he listened, smiled AND as the neighbor entered my front gate stated to me, " Well that's bloody good music Mate, can't see why anyone in their right mind would object to that," then looked sternly at my neighbor and said, quite officially, " You, Sir, are trespassing on this land, you HAVE made a false report to the Police, wasting out time, fuel and efforts, etc, so I intend to give a hefty fine right here and now, perhaps this might teach YOU a lesson." He handed over the Fine Notice, turned me and asked, " Know anywhere where I can get a copy of that Cd Mate, that's music I could really enjoy ;listening to at home anytime."

@Marionville My Dad spent his working life in the local Silver , Lead and Zinc mines, many a worker never came home after a shift due to rockfalls and other disasters. Most miners ended up with 'Black Lung Disease' caused mostly from breathing in the fetid air fouled with rock dust, explosive fumes and , often, even Radon Gas ever present in the mines, other become suffers of what was commonly known as either " Rockfall Shock Syndrome" or Claustrophobia from spending hours every day in the tight confined spaces hundreds of feet underground. The old timers used to often, quietly of course, that "the ones who died underground were better off than those who survived because their troubles were over." A part of the job my Dad had, besides being a miner of course, was as a member of the Proto Gangs, rescue and recovery of trapped, and often dead, crushed to death by rockfalls, miners somethings it would often take weeks or more to dig into the disaster site and extract the remains, often already decaying or eat away by rats living in the mines, the Proto Gangs were also called in to fight fires underground and one such fire is STILL raging away in Shaft Number 1 of the mine where my Dad once worked, the North Broken Hill Mine. That fire started around 8,00pm on a Tuesday in September, 1963, 7 men were lost behind the fire, 3 men died trying to put it out to no avail and the mine was shut down and sealed off until 1987 when Pasminco bought the Lease and started up an Open-Cut project, they hit the level where the fire started and found it WAS still burning strongly and had succumb to local pressures to close it down once again because of the memories of the men who died there.

So WHY does Amerikka still adhere to that archaic system, in my opinion, it IS simply because of its rampant Commercialism attitude that the 'holy' dollar rates more worth than a human life which is, in my opinion, blatantly obvious given the rantings and ravings of the N.R.A. over Gun Control and the horrific losses of lives, both young and old, from recent senseless Massacres in the U.S. Perhaps the 'motto' on Amerikkkan money should be changed to read " In GUNS we trust and LIVES we are willing to waste" instead of the "In God We Trust" bullshit.

@CapriKious Yes, well technically speaking, a 'word' IS nothing more than waves of vibrations in Air. water or a solid that is caused by a source, i.e. the vocal chords in humans for example, ergo, then, and logically speaking, this non-corporeal entity (god thingy) COULD NOT have uttered a word since, being non-corporeal, it had no physical means to do so PLUS there WAS nothing, as Christians will so vehemently tell us, not even air nor atmosphere for the resultant waves of vibrations to travel through thus creating the impressions of a 'word' to the auditory organ/s, the ears. Therefore, in ALL actual FACT, Nothing simply came FROM Nothing producing ACTUALLY nothing at all.

@CapriKious Exactly. And I have often hypothesized, though I am most definitely NOT a Geological or whatever Scientist, that these 'Black Holes' that have been theorized about in this Universe MAY just be something akin to a 'recycling' system that collects matter from 1 Universe, compresses it and eventually 'injects' it into another, newer, still forming Universe, though that hypothesis has been laughed many times, I tend to think that, since the Universe is basically a system of recycling and reusing then WHY shouldn't it be that this Universe is NOT the resultant of such recycling/reusing efforts? After all, IF these 'Black Holes' ARE sucking in matter, etc, compressing it into a Singularity then, should NOT those self-same Singularities, that have growing for billions of years, also have become so compressed by now that they too would have exploded just as did the one that caused the 'Big Bang' in the first place?

Keith Murdoch ( Father of Wrinkley Rupert Turdoch btw) was one of, if NOT, the main forces behind evacuating our Anzacs from that bloody slaughter fest debacle, between him and Bean they pushed for it despite the Pommie Hierarchy refusing. point blank, to allow it since, in their opinion, evacuation WOULD cost OVER 80% of lives to be lost in doing so. Of course, the Poms were dead wrong since we all know that the evacuation was 100% successful thanks mainly to Aussie ingenuity with the use of drip-tins to fire unattended rifles and the 100 or so volunteers who stayed until very last minute to create a subterfuge to make the Turks think that everything was unchanged and that's how the evacuation was so successful.

@FrayedBear Well, I 've lived and worked here, about 512 kms, give or take a kilometer, from the nearest seashore for over 80% of my working life. We are about 100+ kms from what was ONCE the biggest flowing river in Australia ( now as close to dead or dying as it can be forced to be) and one of , if NOT, the biggest Water Storage Schemes ever in Australia, now also bloody near dead and dying as well, Mate. I CAN state that in 60+ years, this IS the first time EVER that the Darling River has been little more than pools of fetid, stinking stagnant water separated by huge lengths of dry cracked river bottom, and trust me, my Dad and I would fish there very regularly at almost any opportunity and NEVER was the river below half full. Our average annual rainfall out here WAS a mere 250 mms/10 inches usually, but we used to get random 'flooding rains' from time to time BUT we haven't had anything close to 'decent rains' here since 2003 and it would NOT be an exaggeration to say that IF it doesn't rain soon "the trees may well start chasing the dogs." And, yes, I have been to Ballarat/Bendigo and that was around 2012/13, the countryside there was greener that is was here even then BUT that region, as well as southern Victoria, gets good rains most of the time and it rivers get fed from the Snowy Mountains, etc, where the Darling is fed by tributaries from the Darling Downs and those regions mostly and, as was ONCE, those inflows came down WHEN there were decent rains in that are of Queensland/northern N.S.W. As for the polies and their 'Listening Tours' well, how much of the Drought Funds were spent solely for those 'merry little soirees' that SHOULD have spent on helping the Farmers and Graziers to battle the hardships, etc, they are enduring? Listening IS something even a Galah can do with consummate ease, BUT actually doing something, in my opinion, IS something well beyond the scope and ability of most politicians.

Triphid replies on Oct 19, 2019:
Oh, believe me it can and does happen. For example, In the early 1990's I set up a very successful Citizen's Band Radio Group that's main purpose was to raise awareness and funds for the Royal Flying Doctors Service here in Australia, we had well over 1,000 members world-wide, then ONE particular local C.Ber decided that, since " I had instigated something successful and community conscious that was assisting people throughout this country AND he had NOT thought of it first, then he should organize his friends and destroy it," ( his exact words not mine). That is a prime example of what we, here in Australia, call the "Tall Poppy Syndrome" and a prime example of exactly what ONE dissenter CAN do to anything he/she sets their mind to destroy. Perhaps there maybe the odd 27Mhz C,B, Radio Enthusiast in this Group who might remember the A.M.O.S. ( A Mantle Of Safety) Citizen's Radio Group/Club and can confirm that it DID actually exist.

Triphid replies on Oct 19, 2019:
@WilliamFleming Were I trying to be sarcastic you would have realized it immediately, unless of course you were as dull as a box of butter knives that is. Any religious group/follower/s can legal stand on ANY street corner, or anywhere else for that matter, and preach/distribute religious pamphlets and paraphernalia and NOT come afoul of the Law because the Law states that they have the right. Should an Atheist try doing the same, chances are that at least ONE religious person WILL complain to the police and the Atheist WILL be told to cease, desist and move on OR be Charged with Creating a Public Disturbance or Nuisance. A very recent case, somewhat similar to this, occurred here in Australia when a Radio Show host made a harmless joke about the 'Virgin (????) Mary' on his radio show. ONE Faithfool took exception to his very mild and harmless joke and now he face vilification, etc. Also, in December, 2011, a good Atheist friend of mine stood on a corner directly opposite to a group of Jehovah's Witnesses and started handing out what he called the "Atheist Answers to the bible Truths," after handing out almost 1,100 copies to interested passer-by and receiving countless handshakes and encouraging comments, the police arrived, stated that HE had caused a disturbance to the peace of the Jehovah's Witnesses, was arrested, charged, attended Court and fined 750 Dollars and placed on a 12 month Good Behaviour Bond. His defense statement that he was merely " standing well clear of the passage of pedestrians/passers-by and had his back against a wall, his small table also against the same wall and DID NOT solicit in any way for person to accept his pamphlets," was ruled as being Inadmissible by the Magistrate since according the Magistrate " He was acting in direct and blatant opposition to Rights of the Jehovah's Witnesses and Christianity as a whole." Is THAT TRUE freedom of Speech in action OR merely a bastardized version where ANYONE who IS Religious IS FREE to speak and anyone else MUST remain silent?

@dahermit Yes, and that IS the usual and expected response from ever so many Apologists as well as quite a few Atheists/Agnostics. etc, to whom I have also posed that self-same question. But, and here comes the cruncher, when asked WHY this self-proclaimed " One and ONLY True God and Creator insists upon referring to itself as Us or We, the plural form btw, when, being as Omniscient as it is, it would know full well that ONLY IT exists in the place?" And that is pretty much about the time when ALL of the Umms, Errs, Arrrs, etc, begin to pour out of the mouths of the Faithfools as if they were a stream in flood. And when I speak to the Faithfools of the Ancient Egyptian Creation story where, Khnum ( later knowns as Amun) the Creator, said unto himself, " And I (note the use of the SINGULAR) SHALL cause the land, Kheb in ancient Egyptian btw meaning the land of Egypt, to rise from the Primordial waters and from Kheb I shall take hands full of clay and upon my pottery wheel I shall make all things living, trees, plants, animals and peoples of ALL colors and creeds," so WHY would ONE Creator refer to itself in the singular when your version elects for the plural? And again comes forth the same flood of Umms, Arrrs, etc, AND the rare but sometimes occasional " But our Creator is different to theirs."

Though he MAY not be a threat to any member personally, and here I include myself, I do, most earnestly and sincerely believe that should be permitted to go unadmonished he MAY well attract more of his ilk to the Group thus creating an even bigger problem THAT could, more than likely, result in irreparable harm/damage to the Group as a whole. Yes, tolerance/toleration is fine BUT, in my opinion, it can be like elastic, stretch it too far and it WILL snap, and we do NOT want to lose what we have here in this Group, the Group that grants us, the Atheists, Agnostics, etc, a rare freedom to speak our minds freely, do we?

@TheMiddleWay Yes, my recall of such has been a wee bit erroneous with such as time has passed by. But, are not photons particles emitted/issued from a sources, the Sun, for example, in streams/beams? If memory serves correct, photons can be deflected, reflected, absorbed, magnified, re-directed, etc, by the influence/influences of EXTERNAL means/forces, such as mirrors, magnifying lens, etc. A prism, for example, creates the effect of a 'rainbow' by altering the frequency/frequencies of the photons/light particles as they pass through it BUT does not, detectably alter the wavelength of the of the light beam itself, hence 'red colouration' occurs because the original light is WHITE but contains all the colours of the spectrum within and red is the lowest frequency whereas ultraviolet is the highest frequency. also, our eyes 'detect' colour because certain objects, gases, minerals, etc, absorb light and reflect only the part of the light spectrum that they cannot absorb, for example, we see green because a leaf absorbs the light and reflect the section of the spectrum that travels at the frequency we associate as being green. Though, I might add, I may have, due to the rigors of age upon memory, put the absorption-reflect theory arse about forth and, for which, I stand corrected.
