Rudy1962 replies on Mar 12, 2018:
@DenoPenno I agree that one's social/economic status does give many a head start regardless of race. That being said, as a middle age white dude, I'm probably not the best one to explain "white privilege", but I don't think it is just a bullshit term made up by liberals. Here are my thoughts and experiences on it. As a therapist I've been kind of conditioned to look for the more subtle non verbal forms of communication. I used to do case management and about half my clients were black. I remember going shopping with a client of mine who is African American. He was a real mellow dude but he was getting pissed, he said a few things but I could mainly see the anger in his face. He was pissed because the store clerk was following us around the store. I'd been to that store many times before, and not once had I been followed around. Another time I was at a bank in a very white area. This guy, who must have been pretty rich because he had a chauffeur, was doing some business in the bank. His chauffeur, who was black, was waiting outside smoking a cigarette. Some of the employees were talking about the chauffeur outside, "What is he doing? Why is he out there?". It was pretty obvious he was a chauffeur. He was in uniform and there was a limo parked on the street. I think probably all races have a certain level of tribalism built into them. It sounds like you don't have a strong level of tribalism, that is good. Think of it though, obviously it would be harder for us to see "white privilege" if we're not the victims of it. For myself, I think I have a low level of it, but if I'm honest I know I have some. Weird experience. I spent a few years in a neighborhood in Racine that was mostly African American. I got used to it and would walk around not thinking much about it. Then I moved to a rural area which was almost all white. I had lived there a few years and one weekend I went to visit my sister in the Twin Cities. I went on a walk. These two black men were walking towards me on the same side of the street. I got nervous and my heart started pounding. I mean they were just regular looking guys...I thought, what the hell? I believe it was an innate tribalism I was feeling. Had they been white I know I wouldn't of had the same reaction. As the song goes, "Everyone is a little bit racist.". Got to own it to change it....Damn this is a long winded comment.

No I want to die when its my time to go - I am not in touch with my society I feel it gets worse and worse by the day, ready to go any time.

@jacpod This all brings up a pet peeve of mine as a therapist. This field has increasingly turned to the medical model. Sociology has lots it's significance. If someone is depressed or having anxiety, well it is all just seen as clinical. What about society? Maybe the problem is, at least partly due to the person's environment. I know a big part of the change is due to pharmaceutical companies. They are making a killing on psych meds.

@jlynn37 my mom used to tell me she didn't want to live to 100. I always said, "Tell me that when you're 99". Well she made it to 93
What do you do when your child does something that makes you resentful?
Profile comments on Mar 10, 2018:
Feeling resentful is ok, we are humans, and when you feel that it’s wrong to feel resentful for a long period, that is good. You can change that feeling by understanding your son; the things he was going through as a child, the things he witnessed, the way he was treated, and how much love, ...

That's a good response
Do you "collect" anything? What is it, and do you display your collection?

Are You A Leader Or A Follower?
Rudy1962 comments on Mar 9, 2018:
I have never been a leader, but I found I wasn't a good follower. Perhaps that is why I'm an independent contractor and keep a limited social circle

Rudy1962 comments on Mar 9, 2018:
I don't know why but I've been lucky. Nobody outwardly showed me hostility over it.
Rudy1962 replies on Mar 9, 2018:
@Nemeister maybe when I tell them, I think as a defensive reaction on my part, I intuitively get a "come after me, bro" demeanor. Of course that wouldn't explain FB. I only post atheists stuff there once or twice a month. I'm more political there.

jlynn37 comments on Mar 9, 2018:
Neither. I am a loner and just do things my way to suit me. If you would like to join in, fine, if not, fine.
Rudy1962 replies on Mar 9, 2018:
This is meant as a compliment, and not saying you have the lifestyle, but you remind me of "Mike" from Breaking Bad. You look like him and the above statement sounds like something he'd say. And kind of a no nonsense dude that has lived a fair number of years.....
