Signed up for Zoosk on Zuckerbook many. many years back and got inundated with scammers from Ghana, Nigeria, etc, worked out for myself that most Dating Sites are about as useful as a One legged man in an arse kicking contest. Even though Agnostic.com purports to be a 'Dating Site/Group' of sorts I joined it, NOT for and in the hopes of finding a date or a relationship, but for the enjoyment and conversations, etc, that I could have with like minded Atheists and Agnostics like myself and haven't been back on Zuckerbook ever since.

Does anyone have a favorite book that helped you in your transition out of your religion?

I started really questioning religion when I was about 8 years old or maybe even younger BUT I tend to think that actually reading the Bible, aka The Goat herders Guide to the Galaxy, word by word, verse by verse, page by page, etc, plus being expelled from EVERY Xrstian Sunday School by the time I was 9 years old for simply asking questions only served to consolidate and reinforce my rejection of religion and all of its woo-woo.

Now at last I can have the vicar to tea, because finally I have something really suitable to wear.

My 'mother' ( a believer when it was convenient for her btw) literally FORCED me to attend Sunday School at 8 years of age. I started asking questions almost immediately ( I was a child who asked questions about everything) and was EXPELLED on the first day. I was then forced to attend another and slightly different Sunday School the next week, asked questions again and was EXPELLED immediately and so it went on and on until the final resort was to send me to a Catholic Sunday School, same result, I asked questions, got a dozen hard whacks with a cane from the Priest and was EXPELLED that very morning. My Dad, being a life-long Atheist, was always pleased when I came home with the Expulsion notes every Sunday BUT the Catholic Priest was not very pleased when he was confronted by my Dad for striking me with the cane since my Dad told him that" Should he EVER see him raise his hand to ANY child he, my Dad, would shove that stinking cane so far up his Catholic arse it would take a Search Party to find it again." So began my life as an Atheist and so shall it remain.

Ages ago I gave up boiling a kettle to make coffee, then last year friends gave me a Nescafe "Dolce Gusto" Coffee Maker for my birthday and Xmas. It's great, just put hot or cold water from the kitchen tap into the water container, add a coffee pod ( they come in many various kinds btw) into the receptacle, press the button and wait until goes from red to green, insert your cup and steaming hot coffee to suit your taste comes out. It makes a great Cappuccino, Latte, Flat White, etc, and has changed my morning 'routine' from a glass of Iced Coffee to a piping hot cup of coffee these days.

Back in 1992 when I was a volunteer ( all were volunteers btw) with the State Emergency Service here in Broken Hill, Australia we had a summer storm, nowhere quite near the scale of a Cyclone/Hurricane but truly bad enough btw, where houses were flooded, roofs torn off, trees up-rooted and the normally dry, sandy creeks were just torrents of water running at depths of up to 8 to 10 feet. Half of our crew were working around the clock pumping out flooded houses, covering torn off roofs, etc, while the rest were racing from one place to the next rescuing rank idiots who decided to IGNORE warnings and would, instead, try racing cars through flooded creek crossings, thankfully no-one actually drowned BUT 4 of our crew were swept away down stream a number of times during these rescues and could have quite easily been drowned. Yet those rank idiots that needed rescuing because of their stupidity did NOT even get cautioned or fined, etc, by the Authorities afterwards, so on one hand, I say rescue them, but on the other hand TRY to educate them that their own stupidity ACTUALLY has the consequences and chances that IT can/will cost the lives of others.

Everyones actual body changes from time to time, cells die and are renewed regularly but still we remain as recognizable Human Beings on the inside no matter what we attempt to change on the outside. Great and Massive Kudos to you and your family for being True and Decent Human Beings and my most sincere condolences on the loss of your brother, it IS people like yourselves that bolster my hopes for Humanity and the Human Race. You've reminded me of when our little community with a population of around 19,000 people all got together and collected nearly 300 tonnes of non-perishable goods, blankets, tents, cooking utensils,clothing, etc, with not a Bible in the entire lot then asked a Xrstian Charity IF they'd help us to send them to the needy in the big Himalayan Earthquake a few years back. The Charity, which I won't name at present though a well media publicised one, REFUSED point-blank since " We had NOT included bibles or religious materials in our donations." We searched around and found a Non-Religious, Non-Government Group that not only sent trucks to collect everything we had collected BUT also air freighted it ALL to the needy FREE of Charge. We had also struck the same problem when we had collected for the Boxing Day Tsunami, a refusal from a Xrstian Charity BUT an acceptance and assistance from another Non-Religious/Non-Government Organisation who also air freighted our collection totally free of charge. I tend to think that " If you want something done the right and decent way, then do it yourself/selves and do NOT rely upon or let the religious organisations finish the job."

That brings to mind a discussion I recently had with a few good friends where we posited that IF we removed the words God and Angels from the bible stories/tales and inserted such things as 'Extraterrestrial Commanders and their sub- commanders instead would that be a possibility that the ages old legends of " Peoples coming from the Stars" and intermingling with the primitive humans could be, in fact, somewhat distorted and adorned 'references' to early human history and human development? Since almost EVERY Culture/Race( for want of a better term) has its own 'legends', etc, referring to such Star Peoples visiting them from time to time could not they be the root source of these somewhat outlandish bible stories/tales, for example, Australian Aboriginals have legends of the " wandjinna," ( Sky Beings) who taught them about survival, their origins, etc, in this somewhat harsh land, the Ancient Egyptians had legends of their 'Gods' being from the skies, Norse Deities were said to live in and come from the Skies, the Mayans, Aztecs, Toltecs, Incas, etc, ALL shared similar tales and legends, even the early Europeans, etc, all had very similar stories/legends but every culture WAS separated by vast distances, often insurmountable ones as well, BUT those tales/legends ALL share a very similar theme do they not?

Had my 'mother' try to hammer into me her God beliefs, beliefs that were somewhat brought out ONLY when she needed to use them or suited her best btw, she forced me to attend Sunday School, even though she very rarely attended church herself and ONLY when and IF she thought it was necessary to 'keep up appearances.' But my Dad taught me to ask questions about the things I didn't understand and as such I got expelled from EVERY Sunday School held by every form of Christianity that was around the town. My Dad was proud of my expulsions, so proud that he kept a folder containing EVERY Expulsion letter and requested that they be buried with him ( which I made sure they were). Even at both Primary and Secondary School I managed to get myself marked as " Unwanted at Scripture Lessons" ( which were at the time Compulsory) and as such spent many a wonderful hour reading books in the School Library. At first, I was the only student on the " Unwanted List" but eventually the list grew to having 20 regular 'members' all gathered together in the library once ever week, though time amd years have since intervened, we still manage to occasionally keep in touch and reminisce over those wonderful times when we were left to learn about reality rather than religion.

Anyone should take as long as they really need to grieve because it really depends upon the individual in my opinion. I still go through times where I grieve over the loss of my 16 year old Daughter even though it has been nearly 19 years now. But, to my regrets, I found that grief often foster feelings of utter loneliness and that was where I made a most regrettable mistake and fell for the ministrations of one those ' predatory' users ( there ARE both male and female ones btw) that thrive on the grief of others, I got into a relationship with her, married her THINKING I was besotted with her only to realise much later that she was using me and my grief as an exit strategy to escape the town where she lived and had built up a very bad reputation and wanted/needed to find fresher fields. Within less than 3 years I found out that she was 'playing the field' whilst I was watching her children and I forgave her the first time, like the forgiving sucker that I am, but the second time I told her NO MORE, and packed up her and her children ( none of them being mine by blood but loved by me none-the-less) and sent her on her way only to find afterwards that she had rippied me off for well over $1,800 before she left. Yes, I miss those 2 great children and the laughs I had with them around BUT the moral to my story is, " Do NOT let grief cloud your mind and loneliness take hold because when we are grieving THAT is precisely when we are at our emotional weakest and loneliness WILL take over, suppressing our inner cautiousness, often with disastrous results."

I ran up against a few of them when I started studying for my ThD through a PUBLIC University, not through a Seminary, they went as far as registering protests with the Dean of the University because I had openly declared that I was an Atheist, fortunately the Dean dismissed ALL their protests completely and firmly told them that the ENTIRE was to be taught as per the prescribed curriculum and that the curriculum IS open to ONE and ALL WITHOUT exception/bias,etc, etc. Now I proudly hold a Doctorate in Theology and Comparative Modern Religions, presented to me, personally, by the Dean himself.

So there is a condolence card in the break room for one of my coworkers who’s dad just died.

In my 50+ years of life as an Atheist I can honestly state that I have met and known well far, far more decent, honest, caring Atheists/Agnostics than I have Believers/Faithfools. For example and a personal one at that, Some time ago I was walking back home from the nearby Supermarket when I spotted a car by the roadside with a flat tyre and an elderly lady attempting to change the tyre. I stopped, put down my bag of groceries and changed the tyre for her, when I was finished she said to me, " You ARE a true Christian Gentleman, thank you, what church do you attend?" I replied, openly and honestly, " I am an Atheist, I attend NO church." I then received a torrent of verbal abuse from her including, " Get away from me you evil, Heathen Bastard, I don't want to get infected by you." 1 week later, whilst standing in the corner shop, that very same elderly lady walked in, saw me and literally screamed out, " I've been a customer here for over 30 years, IF you are going to let Heathens like him patronise this place then I'll never cross your threshold ever again," and she literally stormed out slamming the door as well. The shop owner, whom I later found out was also an Atheist btw, sincerely and abjectly apologised to me in front of the other 5 or so customers for the embarrassment I must be feeling at receiving such unwarranted abuse. That IS just 1 case of the innumerable cases I could mention where Believers have proven themselves to judgmental, heartless, unkind, cruel and anti-social in my opinion.

As soon as I felt that my daughter was old enough to understand what I was explaining to her I told her the truth in words and ways that were appropriate to her level/s of comprehension at the time/s. By the time she was around 10 years old, she knew all about, except the nitty-gritty bits, the Facts of Life ( the Birds and Bees bit), was fascinated with things scientific, etc, and had formed her opinion that God/s never existed despite what her mother and others tried to tell her. Don't think for even ONE minute that children are DUMB, they are not, just answer their questions factually and in terms appropriate to their age and levels of comprehension BECAUSE they do and can understand much better than we give them credit for.

And VOILA, given enough effort and persuasive energy, you WILL have created the ultimate weapon for controlling the targeted populace.
