Stanford Mass, or Stanford California?
Hi, I am a teacher of a few years probably more than I care to mention.
Robecology comments on Feb 3, 2021:
First of all...I"m a retired teacher in Florida /USA. Secondly; you said "parents must opt in for the chaplain to work with their child" - this can't be a public school...is it a private religious/Christian school? Assuming you're an agnostic/atheist in a religious school....that's a tough one. Can you teach at any other schools? Do you have to teach at a school with a "chaplain" in it?
About a week or so ago, I joined the "conservative atheist group to post a legitimate question on ...
Robecology comments on Feb 2, 2021:
Whenever I get "attacked" for asking a question like that I offer to share the rules I learned in a college debate class. They really "opened my eyes" and make sense. I'll share them in a minute...but I want you to not feel badly. I've been blocked from that group as well. It's sort of an oxymoron - Conservatives in America are generally also religious (I call them the Bill Maher term "#Religulous" - click on the word..).It's more appropriate. But my point is - don't feel badly about being rejected by them...they're just a bunch of "Oxy-moronic" folk.
Surprise (not) Today another tRumpster tested positive for covid at my school.

@NoMagicCookie These last few years have been a revelation regarding your last comment; asking us if we "noticed a difference in the intellectual and logical degradation". It's not so much, I'm afraid, to admit, a degredation as a revelation - that there really are a large number of profoundly ignorant folk out there. It's like they didn't degrade to profound ignorance; it's just that some of us became more aware of it (many call it becoming "woke" or "awakened"). When I saw this video, it helped explain a lot about them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rW9R6jgE7SQ

Easier said than done. It takes a lot of energy to "smile though your heart is breaking"...but "life is more worthwhile if you just smile". Tony Bennett's song comes to mind... Smile though your heart is aching Smile even though it's breaking When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by If you smile ...through your fears and sorrow Smile and maybe tomorrow You'll see the sun come shining through for you Light up your face with gladness Hide every trace of sadness Although a tear may be ever so near That's the time you must keep on trying Smile, what's the use of crying You'll find that life is still worthwhile If you just smile That's the time you must keep on trying Smile, what's the use of crying You'll find that life is still worthwhile If you just smile Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Phillips

I like your "middle-ground" approach ("the progressive left and Trumpy-types both have mostly-valid") but I think you're just being apolitical...which might be wise for an owner-administrator. The fact is, if you're agnostic you're already a progressive thinker - and while you know that many agnostics support Trump - a scientific minded agnostic knows better - but also knows not to step on toes. Anyway; welcome back. Hoping that the family issues went smoothly. Here's a quote from a quasi-religious leader that I keep handy...

Shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA)...but I read enough to know it was probably caused by an inexperienced vaccinator shooting too high on the arm or too close to the shoulder joint. So - solution - if/when you go for that vaccine, mention that you are concerned about SIRVA (Shoulder injury related to vaccine administration) and would they please aim their vaccine carefully. That should help. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6347325/

IVF seems key to saving species: [theguardian.com]
Robecology comments on Jan 22, 2021:
What's cool is this; He is the progeny of an egg from a captive mother and sperm from a wild father – a hybrid from parents who were both dead. Olaf is not the first amphibian to be born via IVF – (in-vitro fertilization) that has been happening for years – but he is the first of his species to be born from sperm that was frozen and thawed. What's not cool, IMO, is that he's "named" (Olaf) and described as "cute" etc. This is serious business, trying to rescue an almost extinct species. I don't feel that seriousness in this article. As the authors themselves note; "One reason that conservationists want to boost the numbers of amphibian populations is because diseases are devastating them in the wild. Kouba says cryo-preservation has a place as a last-ditch effort to bank the remaining genetic material from a dying species. Let me add a caveat that was in the article; • This article was amended on 13 May 2020. An earlier version incorrectly stated that Olaf the toad was the first amphibian to be born using frozen sperm. He was in fact the first of his species to be born via that method. Thanks, @Theresa_N for sharing this.

Does anyone think there is truly one superior coffee maker, or process?
Robecology comments on Jan 20, 2021:
The "French Press" maker is a bit messy - but can make a very satisfying cuppa Joe. If you're a drip person, consider going to the fine-mesh re-useable gold plated filters..they leave your coffee a little cloudy (like the French press does) and they're re-useable....which I prefer. Then you can wake up to a fresh brewed pot that you set up the night before (assuming you have a timer on your coffee-maker). They're available in both the cone and basket shapes. The cone shape has less plastic and more gold mesh for us "purists". Filtered water seems to make a better cup. Keep your machine clean. Cuisinarts come with a filter. Scuz, and bacterial film will form after a few weeks/months of using without cleaning..... Experiment with different mixes of Decaf, regular, and flavored . My present favored combo is half decaf half hazelnut. Sometimes I use the grinder and enjoy fresh ground; but don't notice a significant difference... I found a vacuum container for my coffees, and keep them in the fridge.

First thing to look at is our population density; it's been proven to create many stress diseases; https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1501789/pdf/califmed00143-0080.pdf Population density and Social pathology; "the more crowded it gets, the crazier we become" And we're growing at the rate of 150 more births, than deaths, per minute. 216,000 more per day, 1,512,000 per week. It's not quite the pace it was when it peaked in the 1980's - we're gradually getting our "family planning" act together....but I predict it's too little, too late. Next thing to look at is the Per capita (latin for per person, average) rate. Per capita, the highest cancer rate is in Australia; https://www.wcrf.org/dietandcancer/cancer-trends/data-cancer-frequency-country Per capita, the highest. autism. rate is in Hong Kong; https://www.statista.com/statistics/676354/autism-rate-among-children-select-countries-worldwide/ Be aware; it's our overall growth rate that's not only causing our lifetime limit to level off (the U.S. is presently leveling off at age 81) - it's our proximity to each other. All of us are closer - so we share more diseases faster, and the diseases we share evolve more quickly. This social distancing thing is working, as are masks and vaccines...but the next pandemic will make this one look like a "walk in the park". We will go extinct -it's not a matter of "if" it's a matter of when. https://www.worldometers.info

Robecology comments on Jan 20, 2021:
I have lots of interest in this man. He's said and done things that no other CEO has ever done. He's developed the Tesla motor company, then went on to develop recycleable rockets (SpaceX) then he pioneered. Solar shingles, then he pioneered underground tunneling. Most recently he's launched close to 1000 satellites each capable of transmitting the internet to the entire world...which he insists that - like GPS - should be free. In each case he's made all his patents - any discoveries that were unique to his products - available for free. No fees required. He's that interested in promoting the evolution of humanity to a higher level. Here's a great video he did at the Sorbonne in 2015 that gave him even more credibility. The "dumbest experiment" he's referring to is America's push to keep mining and selling fossil fuels and fuel using materials. BTW; The main reason he's gone to # 1 billionaire is the phenomenal growth of TSLA. Google it. Invest in them. In a few years - or sooner - you'll be able to cash out the profits and buy yourself a Tesla cash. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKCuDxpccYM=IwAR3ttXRoZE4TH2OI4VDw1qediNVGMWH9IU1wecWO3GMKYVCrtyGfgDLpMEw

Robecology comments on Jan 19, 2021:
The movies "Outbreak" and "Contagion" were popular because there was a strong element of reality in both of them. I'm afraid we're closing in on extinction. A combination of more people on the planet (150 more births, than deaths, per minute, 216,000 more per day, 1,512,000 per week) plus the rapid evolution of the viruses make COVID19 look like a walk in the park. Another analogy is "the tip of the iceberg". Keep wearing those masks. Find out about vaccines. Social distance. And consider being "child-free" not child-less"...or we are speeding up to that midnight "doom/extinction" event. Fact check my data here; and google "Outbreak /Contagion trailers" if you haven't seen either. https://www.worldometers.info

Instead of "Non-religious science teachers any age" - expand and generalize...call it "Science and education" or just "Science Education"? I don't think anyone's taken just "Science" ....so that might broaden your membership and participation? Rob

Sure he's old. Sure he's coming off as centrist and feeble. But if he stays healthy I foresee a lot of positive growth for our nation. Kamala would make a great POTUS...and if she has to step in I'm sure she'll do a great job.

Great shots of Hawai-ian lava!! I stayed inside my home in Homestead florida when Hurricane Andrew hit in '92. It was frightening...yet amazing. We watched part of our roof go upwards into the eye of a mini-tornado when the eyewall passed over our home. I remember feeling - with my eardrums.- the intense reduction in pressure just before the roof section was lifted. Glad I stayed...No pics on this computer....sorry. We went outside when the eye was passing over; I looked up and saw that huge eye-wall illuminated by a full moon....I'll never forget it!

Trump ended up doing America a favor; we now have a Democrat in the W.H., a democratic House of Representatives and a 50-50 Senate house. Thanks, Trump!

It's an exciting time. And progressives are making gains all over. We won the mid-terms. We won this election. With the Georgia senate vote of Jan 5th, we've now attained a balanced Senate. And Trump's being the worst of sore losers. So democrat/liberal/progressive gains have been made. Trump's now in the process of being impeached a second time; and McConnell s signaling that while he doesn't think there's time to convict by Jan 20th...he is in favor of impeachment. So sit tight. Be positive. Trump's rebellious minions are likely to remain home and lick their wounds from Jan 6 (150 arrests...more every day). Copy save and share this list. https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/seeking-info/violence-at-the-united-states-capitol-8 Here's a charming video showing at least 15 people that Trump called loser...now it's their turn to call him that; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mj01Gi22LsM

It's a comment on Trump...and you're posting it in "General comments and Hellos"? There's plenty of political groups and anti-Trump groups that would appreciate that post better. Consider sharing it with other groups.
But without gods how would we know right from wrong?
Robecology comments on Jan 11, 2021:
Remember; those suffering prison/incarceration were not raised with an emphasis on loving discipline. Many (unofficially 90% or 9 out o 10 - but the research only done by survey of the children....not the parents) were not brought in to this world as a "planned pregnancy". Many (25% or 1 in 4) incarcerated adults had incarcerated parents themselves. https://www.epi.org/publication/mass-incarceration-and-childrens-outcomes/
I got no response from site support and am wondering if others have the same problem on computers.

@Psyche91 Our knowledge, and education, in general...is growing. But for us demographers...it's growing too slowly to indicate our successful transition to a balanced planet. As knowledge grows religion declines and the wisdom of family planning grows....these are proven facts...but the sad part is that due to our still rapid (150 more births, than deaths, per minute) growth...religion will maintain its' hold....and we are heading for an extinction. I wish it weren't so...but it explains a lot about why we're still so slow to come off religion. https://www.worldometers.info

Here's the thing. There are some who see the big picture and don't care. Call them aware...but accepting, or tolerant. There's some who see the big picture and think we can do something to change our species' course. Call them aware and optimistic. There's some who see the big picture and are resigned to accept our demise. Call them aware pessimists. There's some people who see the big picture and welcome the changes. Call them aware evolutionists/evolutionaries. There's some who have been so shell shocked by the big picture that they don't care - or deny the "big picture" - or say "it's in God's hands". Call these folk naive, uncaring, "shell-shocked" or #religulous...and to be honest; the "fear-mongers" - many who are legitimate environmental progressives - are a bit to blame for these people. The myth of "Chicken little running around declaring the sky is falling" does have a logical ring to it. And there's a huge number who do NOT see the "big picture" - call them simply Unaware.
My parents had this album when I grew up and always enjoyed it.

Henry Mancini was decades ahead of most modern "soft" or "smooth jazz" artists. He - along with Peter Sellers and the producers of the "Pink Panther" - made jazz popular for the masses. It was nominated - but didn't win - the best music score in 1963 (The Sherman brothers and their music for Mary Poppins won that year). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pink_Panther_Theme
