@Robecology The used it for storing lots of things, The seem to think it was the high acid content, low oxygen, and total darkness. Like most human "neat things" they probably discovered it by accident and when it worked, they just kept using it. But like squirrels, they didn't find everything they hid.

@SageDave LBJ implemented the Great Society programs, over the objections of Southern Democrats, Vietnam was begun under Ike, intesified under Kennedy, nearly finished under Johnson and would have ended in 1968 had Nixon not intervened with the NV in what can only be called treason by promising the NV a bette deal if they would not sign a treaty with Johnson. Medicare was the brainchild ofg LBJ, passage of the Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act and others would never have been passed under Kennedy, he tried and failed. To denigrate LBJ over one aspect of his presidency tells me that you are not a student of history.

@TheGreatShadow The only thig he got right was that 4 people could launch 10 minuteman missles, but that would entail compromise of the commmand post and an LCF and the eye in the sky that can override any unauthorize launch attempt. When the good doctor wrote his paper in 1977, the entire launch sequence was still classified Secret, so if he had released factually correct information, he would have been in jail.

glennlab replies on Mar 16, 2019:
@TheGreatShadow I worked on minuteman and that is bullshit, first of all there is no pal system installed on any stateside weapon they are only used on naval vessels and on weapons on foreign soil. They are only 4 digits and are stored in a safe in the nuclear munitions plant only to be installed when the weapons are sent out to be loaded onto aircraft. Minuteman has a 28 digit apha numeric launch authentication code with arming by keys inserted into the launch control console. someone blew smoke up that reporter's ass.

@TheGreatShadow 1. The actual password is changed daily and has been since 1951. And there is no single password. Depending on which one you are talking about it can be classified anything from confidential to Top Secret. There are more rumors sourrounding nukes than any other weapon system since almost everything about them has been classified at one point or another and quite a bit of it is still classified.

@BeeHappy No, we are not, and I'm sure that the charisma is still there. The man was probably the most charming person I have ever met, warm, friendly, and he just made a pesonal connection whe you met him. he had an uncanny ability to remember seemly insignificant parts of converstions in later meetings and you felt that he really cared.

@CaroleKay I'm almost sorry I asked, I found a supplier in Houston, about 4 hours away and they have a SELECTION, over 11 pages of just the Euphorbias plus a list of othe cacti and succulents to die for, I'm going to have to loose that site, or I'm going to spend a fortune.

SO jealous here in Oregon! The garden centers haven't even set out stock, aside from some vege starts. Good news on 2 fronts: many of those are organic and non-GMO, and current weather forecast says last night was our last below freezing!!
glennlab replies on Mar 11, 2019:
I still have a chance of frost 2 nights this weekend, another reason that the nectarine tree is having it's last season, on most winters we don't get the chilling requirement, we have late freezes, and I live across the street from a park that is a squirrel haven, 5 nectarines in 20 years.

@Kattywampus69 I like the real whipped cream, hershey's chocolate, and perfectly ripened stawberries, Wallyworld doesn't stock my stuff. lol, then you have to leave the strawberries out for an hour to get to room temp, gently heat the chocolate, only then do you shake the whipped cream. Can you tell that I plan way too much in advance.

glennlab replies on Mar 11, 2019:
@Robecology They are rising, as a result of not being able to release excess heat into the atmosphere. When the air is cooler, the ocean can release more heat, it does this through heat eachange in the sea mist generated by waves. If you have about six months I can explain the theories of heat exchanges between land masses, oceans, tropical storms, convection currents, glaciers and how much we still have to learn. Climate change is real.

glennlab replies on Mar 11, 2019:
I use pickling vinegar, its stronger and is the one reccommended in the organic lit. but I've used regular vinegar in a pinch and it works, but not as well. The chemical combination is what does the job, the soap strips off the protective coating, the vinegar actually burns the cells, then the epson salt pull the water out of the exposed cells, rupturing them. Kind of like pouring hydrogen and oxygen on a plant, does no harm but little good, combine them, and you have a wonderful vehicle to carry nutrients to all the cells of the plant.
