Well, my direct experience with his followers (the ones I have run into anyway, an admittedly small sample) do in fact think his cruel and bigoted administration is terrific, and something they craved for a long time. They are convinced this is the new normal. Even when the practical effects are directly and significantly harmful to them physically and financially, they stick with the new normal because for them it means their racism, xenophobia, and cruelty are the new normal as well.

The EC was formulated as a way to get rural states to agree to join the inchoate union by making their influence closer to the influence of more populous, urban states in the choice of a president. That compromise worked. Back when the country was young, when electors did not grant a majority to a single candidate, which the founding fathers anticipated and welcomed, the choice of president became the responsibility of the house of representatives.
